Thanks to the Home Depot Prospective and Ryobi Power tools for partnering on this build!
Back to the DIY Travel Trailer Project with a Slideout Kitchen build! This will serve as an outdoor cooking station and dining/food prep area for the trailer. I think this would be a great project for a van conversion, trailer build or for an overlanding SUV! In the video I go over the basic framing with pocket holes, aluminum trim, drawer glides, hinges, hardware installation, and even a little bottle opener cap catching set up! I hope it may give you some ideas or inspiration for your own project :)
Let me know if you have any questions! - Joe
NOTE: I mention in the video that there are about 20 videos on this trailer build, but this is listed as part 13. Why? Well, that is because some of the other ones like the trailer lock, battery box, bumper/stabilizers, etc,... were done as 'side projects' to the main build. Not sure why I did that but they should all be in the 'DIY Travel Trailer Project' playlist ;)

I appreciate how you include images of the final product right at the beginning of the video. It helps us understand the various steps during construction. I wish more DIY RU-vidrs would do that. Thanks.

Thank you for letting me know! I prefer that as well when I see vids. But I know some don’t like it as well. However, I think most people like little bit of a preview so they can have a picture in their mid... which I think kinda makes the build portions make a bit more sense 😀👍

Joe, I am sure I speak for so many of your subscribers when I say that this has been a brilliant series from the initial framing to now (even your response to the hailstorm calamity). I am sure it gives you enormous satisfaction when you see your family enjoying themselves so much in something you have built. A HUGE thumbs up.

Thank you Tony! It sure is a wonderful feeling to use it. When I wake up and look around at everything being built with my hands... it’s just such a nice thing to realize! When I see my girls sitting at the table or grabbing something out of a cabinet, it just makes me smile 😊 One of the best, most rewarding projects I’ve ever undertaken! And as always I appreciate you watching and commenting... you may not know it but the comments have helped me think through the build as well as persevere to this point. Highs and lows but mostly highs😉👍🙏🙏

Try this for an Australian bottle opener (underside of a picnic table is best): Take two round-headed screws and screw them almost in allowing a bottle cap to fit between the underside of the screw and the table. The pitch of the two screws is such than when screwed in, almost touch. Slide unopened bottle under the table until the cap engages with the screws, and tilt bottle. Piddle easy to "make". Keep them thar vids a-commin'!

Nice work Joe. Minwax vs Varathane BRAND. So many years we were used to Minwax brand products, H-Depot shifted over to Varathane brand. Now i have to re-learn a bunch of new finishes. its probably similar. Anyway the big thing is desert dry-ness. 8 months out of the year i cant use this stuff. That aluminum trim is quickly becoming a signature of your work, its nice.
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 3 года назад
Thank you! I’ve really taken to trimming everything in aluminum... 😂. Just w like that crisp look and durable protection it provides. As for the minwax and varathane. Honestly I’m not sure of too much difference. I’ve used both and in terms of usage I think they are about the same. And you are right with our desert dryness... that has made wiping the excess stain off in a timely manner even more important. Of course I do love being able to do recourse quicker than say, a humid area.

Great video! Nice build...Thanks for sharing! I've got to build the same think for mine. I have to build a kitchen drawer identical to what you just built, and one on the other side for a water wank that I'll be able to slide out. FYI don't buy a cheap awning if you install one on your camper. I bought a cheap amazon awning, and the extruded metal portions are so thin it only took a little wind to bend it.

The aluminum trim against the golden oak stain looks very lovely. What a difference that trim makes, such a finished look. Your videos are a very good guide and I am enjoying them immensely. You have so many skills. This is a great slide out kitchen. Please know that the music was a huge annoyance and hurt my ears. It is unnecessary in every video. DIY, demo, tour, cooking, and wildlife music should never have music. It ruins them. My ears are literally hurting from that electronic sound. Natural sounds are so soothing. I guarantee that if you removed all music, your subscriber and viewing list would increase a lot.

Wow Joe that is an awesome design you've made. And yes I love the trim. I'm like you about that stainless trim. It gives it a great look, IMO. Another great addition & video of the camper. Are you sure you don't want to tackle my camper? You can't blame a girl for trying.... lol.... You be safe camping in the wild. Please watch your 2 girls closely while camping. There's things out there in the boonies that people don't want to believe. But I know you will protect your girls. Do you take a gun when you camp? I sure do. There's wild hogs out there that will do you harm & big snakes that give me the willies. Be safe, have fun & enjoy that little girl as long as you can. They sure grow up fast, Chris from Missouri

Good video. I got some ideas for my outdoor kitchen I am redoing.. A suggestion....Instead of covering the pocket holes with a sheet of ply....you could put a little glue in the pocket hole, then drive a short piece of 3/8" dowel in. Once the glue dries cut the dowel off with a multitool or flush cutting saw and sand....they almost disappear.

Great job & very innovative as always! I do see one booboo... I think you're going to find that your lighter is either going to bounce out from the vibrations & bumps of the road, or it's going to slide forward & out when you hit the brakes.
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 3 года назад
It actually is a pretty snug fit. But I can see where that could happen. But, with me having it up camping right now, I can say that when I pulled it out.... it was still in place. But, that was almost completely on paved roads. When we do our summer camping trips in the white mountains we drive on probably 30+ miles if I paved roads, so that will likely be an issue. So I’m already thinking of a quick little mod that might help that a bit😀👍

You could have a hatch on the surface to raise it up when it is extended; a bit like on those old foot-powered sewing machines.

Yes, I do know of those and I think it’s a great idea! I may just have to incorporate something like that... thank you😀🙏

Have you checked out how much those little trailers like that cost? They are a little expensive, even just the little teardrop trailers are outrageous, building that was a great choice I think, especially since you like camping and being in the great outdoors. I have sort of been thinking about building one, if a person made many road trips it would save them a ton on motel rooms.

Yes they sure are expensive! I am very glad to have started this build.... long process but I’m glad to have started it! And I would encourage you to try you hand as well. The best resource that I found on building a trailer is tnttt.com (teardrops and tiny travel trailers).... great forum with lots great builds from restorations of vintage trailers and ground up builds to various harbor freight kit trailer designs and even folks that build their trailers out of rigid foam sheets!! So much great info!!! And yes, saving on hotels will add up fast😀👍

I'm going to say "great job" now, before watching the video cuz I've been waiting and BAM you snuck it in and now 186 thumbs up...I am late to the party - again! :) But since I saw it in "real life" I know the video will be amazing!!! :)

Another great video. I was excited at the beginning of this, it looked like you picked up a new sponsor but sadly, Coco Cola was just product placement. As with any project that you love, it will never be ‘DONE’. You will always find something that can be added or improved. Is the next trip a bow hunting trip or is the family camping out for Thanksgiving and going to put that stove through it’s paces? Thanks again for sharing and have a great trip!
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 3 года назад
Thank you Thom! Nope, no new sponsor... I’m quite sure I’m way to small time for Coca Cola to want anything to do with me....haha... but I do love the bottled cokes! Besides, if they gave me a free supply of cokes then my post holiday weight loss plan that much harder😂😂 As for the next trip... yep, it’s gonna be another bow hunting trip. I know some folks get all weird about that stuff so I just say camping so as not to offend....haha. But I use a traditional recurve so the odds are greatly in their favor😉 It’ll be up in the 8-10,000’ range so it’ll be cooold for this desert rat🥶

You can screw the shims on both side , you just cutting the long shim in to two small pieces, and screw them at the edges where it should be ,when you open the drawer turn the shims from inside to out side around the screw or bolt ,I hope it’s clear ,,,

Might I suggest that you take a look at the Shawnee Hills Foxtail camper on RU-vid. He has a really handy en suite shower built using a Plano rifle case that would probably work for you.

AWESOME job! I've been building furniture and cabinets for over 50 years as an occupation, and gotta say that is one of the slickest ideas/projects I have seen in years! One question, where did you get the door that enclosed the slide out kitchen?
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 3 года назад
Well thank you so much! That means a lot coming from a pro👍😀🙏. As for the door it slides out of... I got it used on eBay under the title of ‘rv storage access door’
