Excellent build with a high degree of precision. You set the depth to 10mm, but on checking you found it to be 9.14mm. Since the build is highly accurate, the depth must have been very close to 10mm. The real reason for the inaccuracy is this: Watch closely at 23:09. As the hole is being drilled, a small piece of wood shaving lands near the zero mark of the scale. The drill is lowered to drill the hole, but the wood piece prevents the drill from reaching the full depth of 10mm. Check it once again making sure that nothing obstructs the full movement of the drill; you should get much better results.
@@carlosvargas2907 Yes you are correct my friend. To set the depth of 10mm the tip must be forced into the wood so that the actual bit is set to surface of the wood. not above. He is also explain this in the video. if you set the tip on the surface you need to set the depth at 11 and not 10.
i just wish i had your talent and workshop i am 63 years old and only have a small shed to work in but waching your videos even inspires me at my age thank you so much and please take no notice of any bad comments there is a lot of envy out there great videos thank you
Very nice build and your care and craftsmanship were a pleasure to witness, I would say though that unless the drill press is reinforced somehow and braced, it will soon become loose and be incapable of delivering perfectly vertical drill holes as the screws and glue which hold it in position to the base are simply incapable of bearing the inevitable strain to which they will be put. Thank you for showing this to us, I really enjoyed watching you work.
The drill press looks quite solid. He has routed out a perfect size hole for the drill to sit in and it is being supported tightly on the top with two clamps. The holder is supported by wood screws and it is a double thickness of plywood. I don't remember th last time I saw wood screws loosen up. Plywood does not crack or warp easily and is quite strong. The press should last quite a while and continue to drill nicely if not abused.
Great, that is the answer. It can be done with tools you have at home. Very often in these videos you need all sorts of fancy tools and machines. Well done 😊
There are many people who make similar tools, but I think that there are few who are making with accuracy. This video incorporates ideas on how to make accurate tools using simple measuring instruments.
Nice video. I noted something about depth issue - look on your vid, while drilling small chip felt on top of depth stop just between that stop and drill mounting plate
Wow I watch like 20 videos of how to do this but this one's at a completely different level, Satisfying Accuracy Level haha, i need to try it, thanks for the great explanation, greetings from Mexico
I've been looking for a simple design for a drill press for a while now and this one is the most ingenious! The DIY press with depth limitation and perfect aligning! And it's not super-complex as well, totally doable! That's the sign of great engineering and design - simple yet beutifully efficient. Thank you so much, this will be my next build! Also I've found a couple of beutiful tips for any DIY build here, like correcting that 90 degree angle by simply glueing a small paper tape to one side of the bar instead of endlessly trying to grind it to a flat level and many more. You really made my day, subscription is inevitable :)
This is amazing workmanship. So precision. Acurecy indicates that this hand has gone thru tremendous excercises before. I am very much inspired by this video. I think I should make one for me for sure. Thank you very much. I look forward to watch many more of this kind.
Perfect, very smart, ingenious system, very clear & comprehensive video, regarding the scope of works : HATS OFF! Just little remarks... in my humble opinion use 1) gloves when you mix chemical products like epoxy resin, 2) same when you keep off extra stick on wood piece, 3) a sweep to clean wood shaving not directly yours fingers, for the rest weldone very precize idea, thanks a lot Dear Worker!
It looks great. The only weak point, in my view, is positioning the drill with that hardening putty, or, making sure that once positioned the drill is going to stay like this. Do you consider removing the drill from time to time for other work? And how heavy is your drill, or what power as I wonder about that attachment of the column to the base?
This is only just for fun because the cost for parts ( wood, rail etc) for this project probably little bit less than the real thing which is not that expensive. I'd buy the real thing ready to use product. Still great idea and nice video 👍. Thanks.
Before you buy the plans (9.03 USD) make sure you price everything out that you will need. I did. Prices in Japan must be significantly less than in the US as after pricing the aluminum ($50+ for aluminum sheet for .375 since US dealers don't stock 4mm or 67.00 for 1/2-inch plate (don't buy pre-cut it's astronomical!), pillow linear block LHSSW12 identical to video @ 2 for $68.00 each, magnetic base MB-PG for $56 - $90, Chinese drill chuck another $100+, Guide rail shaft 2 for $10.00, and hex head sockets 10+. If you're keeping track that runs from $373 to $423+. I went to Amazon and looked up Magnetic Drill Presses. There were 45+ just on the 1st 5 pages in that price range already assembled and with warranties and they come with the drill! I don't know about you but I have better use for my time and money. I just purchased a new magnetic drill from Amazon for less than $275.00 which included some bundled bits and other items and that included tax and shipping and I'll get in in 2 days. There is also a serious typo in the plans which if you don't pay attention will cost you over $200 in aluminum if you're not paying attention.
