If humans want to expand into space, it will take us incredible amounts of energy. How do we do that? Easy: we will just use the sun’s energy by realizing the most ambitious construction project in history. This is how it works.

Sometimes Kurzgesagt make the dumbest videos like this one . No civilization would go to the trouble of making a dyson sphere when you can just make a computer to simulate the universe and the simulated occupants of said universe would never grow old , be sick or die ...that is why we don't detect Aliens because they shed biology long ago .

When I was a little boy and I learned about solar power I often would think about how pointless it was to have solar collectors on the ground when we could just have them in space! Even better if we could have them around the sun itself! I never had a word for describing this until I was in high school when I came across the idea of Dyson spheres I got disappointed it wasn’t an original idea but also super happy someone else thought of it too and became super curious about far-future technologies ever since! Dyson spheres are my favorite!

As one man once noted, the problem to building a Dyson Sphere is two-fold: 1. If it doesn't spin, the slightest nudge will imbalance it and it will collapse. 2. Spinning it stops the problem of imbalance. However, centrifugal force for something the size of the sun will apart.
@o2Hayden
@o2Hayden 6 месяцев назад
But the whole video focused on a Dyson Swarm, not a Dyson Sphere. If its a swarm, then it doesnt need to spin, it would simply need to orbit which we know how to do. So you couldn't "nudge" a Dyson Swarm because its not a single object.

Why we don’t put solar panels on mercury instead of destroying mercury to build dyson sphere
@BlitzsieLDiscoLSnow
@BlitzsieLDiscoLSnow 2 года назад
@@secretunknown2782 Because solar panels are very short-lived compared to the timespan it will take us to harnes all the energy needed for interstellar space travel. Solar panels are not as efficient as we think :) They're still heaps better than fossil fuels at not destroying our planet, but it's still not good enough for very, very big energy generation. @@sw1tch327 The abysmal efficiency, recyclability, and maintenance of solar panels and the difficulties we would also have with capacity when it comes to storing that power. On the one side. We might not need huge capacity if we can solve the problems with Solar energy. Solar Panels lose efficiency as they heat up and their efficiency is rather shit to begin with. But if we could develop solar technology that would allow us to control how much energy we take-in, whenever we need it. Then we wouldn't need to have an incredibly advanced energy infrastructure. That said. Without that advancement. We need a good way to direct as much solar energy into the energy grid for storage for when it's needed. Batteries are essentially already at their best efficiency that we can actually get them. There's pretty much a chemical limit. So we can't just make a super-grid of batteries. They're expensive, volatile, inefficient for our purpose etc. Super capacitors have the problem of having even less efficiency than batteries but they can output charge much faster. Not really fit for purpose. Perhaps we'd find ways to use any excess energy that we harvest when it's not needed and pump it into a mechanical system that would allow us to convert later on. I'm spitballing here but yeah. There's a boatload of issues with just receiving the energy. Let alone setting up the infrastructure that builds the thing.

@@Unethical.Dodgson Well if you watched the video it covered that when it said to use mirrors. With that much power we can use kugleblitz batteries (maybe). And we can just not store whatever energy we don't need and use what we can and then we have a very high demand for energy storage

Honestly, most people would rather focus on space travel than current problems because it's easier and more interesting. There's a reason there are hundreds of sci-fi shows but none about feeding the homeless.

@@sw1tch327 sorry to necro here, but my concert is he said mirrors to direct to a place. If that place is on earth then we are going to fry the earth before the end. Even if we dont, if the mirrors have a glitch that much energy focused in one place could demolish any city (magnifying glass and ant). So we focus on an object in orbit, how do we get that energy here? We don't have a way to efficiently transmit energy across space. Right now the only way they can think of is lasers, and again with that much energy a bad actor could demolish a city. There is also a massive amount of energy lost to the atmosphere and then again with solar. The mirrors have to be able to direct in unison to a point. How are we going to do that? Not to mention it has to get into orbit, but the mirrors will act as solar sails. If we use the force of those to keep it in orbit then we run into the issue of sun spots. Then how do we rotate the mirrors to remain focused on earth? Can't be gas we would run out on the mirrors before long. Maybe some gyroscope, but we would have to have billions of satellites working in unison

@@shardinhand1243 You don't need "billions of earths" worth of resources, it i stated as much. And why would such a project be a joke? It is more grounded in our understanding of physics and thecnology than things like Alcubierre warp and wormholes.

@@paulohenriqueferreiradealm1893 also aside from needing more metal than we could get from every planet in the solar system, even if we made it, it would just be destroied by its own gravity, the suns gravity, and all the heat from it, but ignoring all that, the energy from it would only be practical to use for our solar system... which we would have already left for behind just to get the resorces to build this silly thing.

@@shardinhand1243 Well both the video and every other article that talks about a Dyson Sphere says that, at most, you would need just Mercury do do it, and not even all of it. After all, the idea is that the parts composing the sphere are as thin as you can get away with it, despite how wide than can get. We are not even talking about centimiter here, but rather millimiters, or thiner if possible. Such structure is not achivable as of now, but nothing on engeneering or physics prohibits it to be, given enough fine tunnig of the construction tecniches already available. It is still worth mentioning that this fine tuning, as well, is grounded on the realms of possibility. Aside from that, the most known name is "Dyson Sphere" but, as the video points out, it would be far more accurate to call it a Dyson Swarm: millions of small, relativly speaking, pannels that collect all the energy of the sun and redirect it for use by the civilization, like a really dense fog covering the sun itself. On the point of going to other star systems, there are almost no reliable way of making it there and back in reasonable times (reasonable in a intersstellar scale, which would still be around three to four centuries, go and come back) without the usage of solar energy. As far as we can tell, accelerating to relativistic speeds without the energy output of a star backing you, is simply too energy costly to be tried. That is, unless we figure some new physics which allow us FTL travel, which we are not even close to.
