I used exclusively FGCI fiberglass and polyester based resin to rebuild this fishing flats boat. All work was done in my backyard. If I can do it you can to. If you want a bit better video resolution and quality look at the original 3 part series I uploaded earlier. These were re-downloaded and edited so some footage is hazy. However, you get the general idea...and don't have to hunt for videos. All the parts of the build are in this one video.

Anyone can say whatever they want to you about this build. I bought this boat off you and i love the dang thing. The 25hp yamaha still runs amazing and pushes this boat plenty. Ive had this boat all over the place. Nothing on this boat is coming apart like anyone said it would. Deck is still solid. Tower is together. Hand rail is still great. All I did was add a few of my likings to it. So to the guys that love this boat and have wanted it. It may be for sale! Sadly.. I have 2 boats and ones gotta go

You did well Grasshopper, for your first run on constructing what you wanted, it came out very nice! I see there are the OCD, “DO IT MY WAY!” Crowd in the comments! It’s practical, functional and fishes, tiny details, 6 one way-half a dozen another! You did well! I enjoyed watching your conversion, I have a 14’ to do myself, just haven’t decided on the exact layout I want just yet, I think I’ll fish it a few moths first, to get an idea of its limitations, float ability in the skinny and make notes along the way!

Thats because of the title being clickbait. It's a rebuild, not a build. People can't sand clickbait even if it's a good video a clickbait title can ruin it. Seen many RU-vidrs go downhill for that reason.

@KayakDIY
@KayakDIY Год назад
@@FarmerFpv Realize this is an old comment. Honestly didn't even think of it as clickbait. Best economical way to "build" this size boat...is to just buy a cheap crappy hull and gut it. WAY cheaper. So to me this is the way to build one. I understand where you are coming from, but cost wise it seems foolish to attempt to build one from scratch when there are so many hulls that make good bones. Ive seen people cut hulls in half and stretch them or put two boats together....still more cost effective. The principles I taught give beginners the basics to tackle most of these projects. It might not be pro boat builder level, but many pro boat builders can't teach others very well...so then we have a bunch of people who never even try. I'm just trying to inspire people to try and not be afraid of failure. A cost effective build like this means failures won't cost you much.

100% If I put fuel tank mounted in the bow it would have leveled out with just me on the boat. The second I put a bit of weight in the front half of the boat it levels out a lot. With one person and fuel tank in stern it squats in the back a bit. Even adding ice and food/drinks to cooler on deck leveled out the boat quite a bit. Also in video I didn’t have water in live wells. Between those two things it significantly corrects the leveling of the craft. Lastly if I throttle a bit beyond idle it starts lifting the stern due to Permatrim cav plate.

Dude you are amazing talented person. You are a nurse? I ask myself why is he a nurse and not a Tech-Engineer sort of that nature ? The quality of recordings and the process of producing is a high up media production control. You are a True Public Servant who will do his best to help people. Very well organized person. You like to seek other’s opinion. You seem to appreciate those who provide you any helping hands? You have a tendency to reassess your thoughts and decisions as you go in life with almost every work, idea or plan you have. I believe if you quit your nursing job and start working for a company that makes boats or become a business owner in any field that is related to the sea, you will be a pioneer in that field. Keep up the great work. I would like to own a boat but I’m at pre-kindergarten level when it comes to knowing the process of boating. Last week was my first time to get on a kayak in the Connecticut Area. I rented it for $20 for one day. I have subscribed to your channel and I will watch more of your videos and of course like them if they deserve to be liked just like this one which was my first video to watch. 18:07 Prior to mixing your epoxy, cut all your pieces of fiberglass mat and have them ready to wet out! Then mix your epoxy and lay all the pre-cut fiberglass!
@KayakDIY
@KayakDIY 2 года назад
That is a good tip. I eventually did that but failed to show it in video. The best tip I have for working in hot environment is to pre-chill resin or gelcoat to increase work time. Not all of us have a climate controlled workshop. Best way to learn is to jump in and have fun. That is the primary focus of this project. Just wanted others to overcome their fears of perfection and tackle a project. Only path to perfection is through failures.

It would of been nice to make a lid out of that second piece of plywood off the bow. The whole thing could of been a lid that lifts up at the aft end with the hinges on the other bow end. It is always good to have as much dry storage you can have. You will learn about squeegees the more fiberglass work you do. Overall a great job, no matter what anybody says. You have to do it to learn and you certainly have done that. Paraffin is used as a surfacing agent on your hot coat so you can sand it. Excellent!

Nice job on the build bud . Also I absolutely love your neighborhood and the canal system , it’s so beautiful there . My only thought was tho man it must be pretty expensive to live there ! Yet here you are getting your hands dirty and fixing an old boat into something pretty cool. That’s impressive. Question tho, why didn’t you just buy a new boat ? Do you just enjoy being creative and doing it yourself? For me I enjoy it building and repairing older things into something new but also some times it’s out of necessity. Simply put I can not afford to buy new . I would like to get a smaller boat like this and bring it back to life . This was inspiring, how ever I did buy my first boat this year but it’s pretty big it’s older a 93 but in well condition. It’s a 93 Baja outlaw 24 much different then this kind of boat it is plenty of fun . Tho I’d like to get a smaller fishing rig like yours and just make it mine

20:00 As someone else posted, this is a good spot to use microspheres mixed into your resin to create a paste. But, when you are building up an area; start with small pieces that just cover the spot (again pulling out the edges to thin it) then the next layer slightly larger and keep layering until its built up to where you want it. At the same time, don't do too many layers at once or the internal heat of the curing epoxy will cause voids inside your layup. **EDIT** Oh yeah, use gloves... it will take forever to get that epoxy off your skin!

The bi ax on the transom is fine. I’m sure there are some internet repair technician commenting. I didn’t care to read them. What you have done should last a long time. You also know what you did. So you can easily repair anything. If the poly res don’t hold up, go to vinyl res. We used all fgci on our 24’ center console. Down to the stringer. No issues with their products at all.
@bigduphusaj162
@bigduphusaj162 Год назад
Been a boat builder for 35yr now. Most of the repair jobs we get in is polly and Vinyl DIY attempts. They shrinkage is what causes most problems. People often do the transom in polly or Vinyl with chop strand and normal plywood or woods but they often don't last long so we get them in. Here in the UK we have Powder bound Chop strand that works with epoxy and thats fine for any transom work as its extremely strong compared to the polly or Vinyl. If its a skin up on a transom we will use 4 or 5 layers of 300, 450 or 600grm glass depending on the thickness required and its always a bit overkill in the strength department, maybe 30% stronger than either polly or Vinyl so it's good that it's a bit stronger and longer lasting but it's easy to overdo it and make the transom too stiff

I am considering building a boat from complete scratch. Want to do around a 13.5-14ft solo skiff with self bailing foam deck. Basically something unsinkable. Maybe run 6hp -9.9. I did see a damaged Gheenoe and thought of cutting the gunnels off and keep only the underside/chines then build new gunnels, new transom, new self bailing floor, and maybe have front deck hatch. I have a second lift in my backyard. The problem with the boat in this video’s rebuild was that I needed drain plug out or charged battery and bilge when not in use else rainwater filled it. I somewhat got around this by using a PwC doctor boat plug valve. I want a micro skiff that I can throw in back of truck or keep in backyard for quick trips out to the flats. I have a 19ft cc boat, but it is bigger than I need for myself and costs more in fuel. I don’t mind your criticism. Haters are sometimes my best fans driving views. 😉❤️

Thanks! Some of it came down to what was available. I realize some was overkill. However, at the time finding other materials resulted in huge shipping costs. Some folks will definitely be able to reduce cost and weight via availability of different materials. If I did a fresh build and had more material options I would go wood free construction. Deck could be a lighter rot free honeycomb or other composite board material with fiberglass covering. Point of this build was largely for me to tackle my fears and show people what a newbie could do. Just want to inspire people. I realize some experienced builders might critique me, but no one is 5 star building boats starting out. Mistakes are part of the process. Key is to have fun and learn. 😊👊
