After learning about the world of FPV quadcopter racing, we couldn't wait to build our own. With the help of Lumenier and FPV quadcopter flyer Charpu, we learn about all the components needed to build a solid mini racing quadcopter for under $850, FPV kit included. Charpu helps us assemble the quadcopter and gives useful tips for first-time builders. It's really not that difficult!
Thanks to Lumenier for providing parts for this build: www.getfpv.com

I remember looking at RC Control Action magazine when I was a kid and literally drooling over everything between the pages with my dad - to whom got me into RC. I took a break from it for a while, because well, life got in the way. But I now just bought another car to enjoy (Traxxas Rustler VX-L). But now, the game has changed. You mean to tell me I can freaking fly a quad-copter around, over and under stuff with the ability to see from the device?? This is an RC lovers DREAM!! I will be building my own as of right now! Great video, too! Thanks for the overview of the build!

-- PSA to anyone watching this in 2017 or later who is seriously interested in building their first FPV quadcopter...DO NOT USE THIS GUIDE! The parts used in this build (although very popular two years ago) are all pretty much junk compared to the tech we have now (besides the frame and radio.) Go check out UAVfuture's video on a cheap first FPV build or a video/guide more recent (the last 6 months) because the technology in this hobby is constantly being innovated and changed. Nothing against this video, I built this exact quad two years ago using this guide with my brother and it was our first FPV experience!

For those wondering: $482 for the Quady w/ FPV. $225 for the Radio. Not quite "something anyone can build," but still really cool and after the initial investment, I'd imagine costs are reduced to make your second or third quad. Good video, could have done a couple things better, but it was still produced very well.

I have been flying FPV, and I understand how hard it is for new guys to get their head around building a racing drone. A channel called UAVfutures helped me a lot when getting into this hobby. It has brilliant how to videos, so if anyone wants to get a better understanding of this hobby, make sure to check it out. P.s. I have not been paid or asked to say this!

First of all, I know exactly how you feel. I created a drive document for what i used to get in the air FPV (i'm creating a website for FPV stuff. The names at the top are friends keeping track of what they have or dont have. Feel free to make a copy for yourself): docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1pBYWW8A6UD3ZXLOPgdfuFHlBEWAv5hDEwAK5j4PSn4Y And here is an electronics blue print for the quad: docs.google.com/drawings/d/1xZ_ErymdB3IRCJjDe5Q07_S4CKG84pl57VHAMtaUutc The parts list is still in progress, so if some values don't add up, that's why! Good luck getting into this hobby! (if you want to contact me send me a youtube message)!

To those that may be skeptical that "all the parts used were sent to them, they might be junk" dont think that. These parts they used are top notch, so many people with these quads use the exact components. Lumineer and fatshark make high quality stuff, so dont feel misled because they got sent the parts!

I was so bummed when I saw that they'd bought a Phantom as a first quad a while back. I hate to be that guy, but they're really mainstream and boring.
@bamsb90
@bamsb90 9 лет назад
Esa Edvik Completely agree with you! In the RC community, there are those who think they know what they're talking about, and those who actually do. It annoys me so much that some people go out and buy a Phantom and think they're all hot stuff. Nothing wrong with commercializing multi-rotors, it's just kind of dreadful in my eyes that the public is viewing the whole thing in such an inaccurate way.
@daveabittner
@daveabittner 9 лет назад
bamsb90 I don't know. Personally, I know NOTHING about the RC community. When I saw Phantoms, I thought, "Hey! Awesome!" but assumed it was like everything else. If everyone's using it, and it's being advertised like crazy, it's probably a pretty shallow device. I get what you're saying, but I think you may be misrepresenting a lot of people :)
@bamsb90
@bamsb90 9 лет назад
daveabittner Well, firstly I know I don't speak for everyone. What I've said is only my opinion and at the time I write, I can see that at least three people who liked my comment agree with me. But I realize not all of my views are universal, so if I have misrepresented anyone then I apologize. :) But I guess personally, I've been used to building model aircrafts in my basement; putting time and effort into making them work in the best way I can and then getting an amazing amount of satisfaction when I get to fly them. Don't get me wrong, DJI isn't a bad company; the Inspire isn't half bad either. Its very stable, it can turn on a dime, its got a long flight time, it shoots brilliant video and all that stuff, and that's really cool! But to me, this whole idea of buying something like an Inspire (or a Phantom for that matter), pulling it out of the box and flying it without having to build it for more than 10 minutes seems kinda lazy... I'm a firm believer that you have more ownership in something when you have to earn it as opposed to when you just buy it or when it's just given to you. I've seen several homemade builds for quadcopters that work just as good as the Inspire and ones that preform much better than the Phantom, the TBS Discovery is a good example. If people looked at it in that light, then perhaps the public's view on multi rotors would be different (maybe they'd stop calling them "drones" and use proper terminology.) I realize that to some people, that seems really trivial/picky/weird or whatever, but hey, if people want to disagree then they can, I've no problem with that :)
@TheJttv
@TheJttv 9 лет назад
i have no issue with the phantom product i have issues with the people who are using it poorly and giving the hobby a bad name because the company does nothing to bring people into the hobby or really promote safe flying habits

This guy should have done some research on the Naze32 before building a Quad for someone. Hopefully you guys have found out that the Naze32 has a voltage monitor and a place for a voltage alarm built in. Just need to attach leads to the voltage monitor from power and attach a buzzer. See the Naze32 diagram and instructions to avoid missing this great and necessary feature.

I did just pick up a used Blackout Mini H that oughta arrive in a few days and I'm sorta racing to get the right receiver, batteries (chargers, balancer), FPV goggles. Get the flysight, it's an entire kit for 750. Comes with controller, quad, goggles, and a backpack to carry it all. It's also a great beginner quad, and replacement parts are cheap for it, good to practice with while you learn quads(assuming you've never had one) also a learning curve with flying FPV vs third person, so expect to crash while learning.

This video is a little out dated. You can get everything you need to race fpv quadcopters for about $300. Here's a post that contains links for what you need to buy and a setup video: copterwars.com/partlist?p=37 If you're trying to try out the hobby without burning through too much cash then getting a pre-built is better these days (back in 2015 this wasn't true). Once you really get into racing, building it yourself is better, but it's also more costly upfront.

That is junk now too. 2306 motors, 2400 - 2800kv, 35A or better BL Heli32 ESCs, F4 FCs, HQ Props 5x4.3x3 PC Props, not too mention lots of stuff are all in one boards too to reduce weight. And smaller frames are fairly popular, 210 and 220 frames to reduce weight because 250's will take 6 inch props, so you can do better if you run solely 5 inch props.

I built a qav250 racing quad a few months ago...for me the hardest and most infuriating part of the whole process was tuning the flight controller! Used an openpilot cc3d. This video is pretty good, though He doesn't talk about managing the COG and balancing props!

Holy hell the frame alone is $150 lol. I'd LIKE to get into this... but I like new graphics cards too much D:

No, that a suggestion. Video cards or Quads, you wanted video cards, are you a special one who only plays they computer outside? Looking at your videos, I wasnt wrong. LOL

Great tutorial. The Naze is an amazing board. If you use clean flight on it. You can use autotune to get some locked in PIDs easy. It also flies great stock.

For all of you wanting to get into this but don't know too much about electronics, the ESC's can come with bullet connectors, so you don't need to solder it up, and the Naze can come with the connections soldered in place. ecalc is a good website for figuring out your setup! Happy flying!

He mentioned the "Lost model" beeper, which can be activated via control tx, but the naze32 can also auto activate the beeper when it hasn't received signal for some time, and it can also beep when battery voltage is low; I don't use an external "battery monitor", just the naze32 inbuilt monitor, and HK simple osd batt. monitor.
