PART 2:
This is how WE build the bracing for a wood fence gate. We used pressure treated lumber for bracing but use multiple 2x4's to fight the natural warping that can happen with southern yellow pine.
We are Mr. Fence!

Can you do a video on building this exact gate in a sloped area? Is everything the same? Should the rails be level or follow the angle of the slope?
@driatrogenesis
@driatrogenesis Год назад
I think you still want to build a square gate, your posts should be level, you want to stay consistent with posts. You will just attach the pickets with the slope, the actual fence rails and brace should remain square with the posts. Ive thought about this, you may not end up with a perfect rail line consistent with fence stringers, since the fence stringers follow the slope. You will however have a better lasting fence then if you tried to match the rails to the slope
@driatrogenesis
@driatrogenesis Год назад
Most gates that you see that are built with sloping rails are metal, not wood. Unless its a rolling gate, with has the bottom supported with wheels, not the same as a swinging gate, If its a swinging wooden gate, i am pretty sure you want the rails to be square with posts
@driatrogenesis
@driatrogenesis Год назад
The hinge side should be the low side, if you want the rails to follow the slope. Otherwise if you go from the high side, you are more likely to increase sag.
@driatrogenesis
@driatrogenesis Год назад
also if you go hinges on high side then you also risk hitting ground when you try to open it. Again maybe with using two posts, you can get away with it. I would rather build a square gate, it may not look as nice on the frame side, but the smooth side will look exactly the same, and the gate will be of better structure,

Hello Sir. I enjoy your videos and currently trying to build a double gate. Do you build those the same way as you do the single? And are those regular hinges I can buy at the big box store. Thank you.
@stedew001
@stedew001 2 года назад
You used a spacer to set your picket offset on the latch side. How was the gap between the end of your runners and the latch post determined when you initially put your runners up (before you started building the gate in this video)?
@Loadedgoods
@Loadedgoods 2 года назад
Simple He used a thing called a Measuring tape. Measured the distance between each post knowing his material setting the posts for the total distance for spans with wood and knowing There’s actually a simple formula to remembering how to frame your rough opening. All you need to do is add 2” to the width if it's a door you also add 2 ½” to the height. In his case the gate wasn't completed so he added 1 ½” inches for the running 2x4. Laymen terms or tan (theta) = (opposite) / (adjacent) = 1 / 2 Therefore, theta = inverse tangent of 1/2, which is roughly 26.5651 degrees. Notice that at this angle, the door gap distance is smaller than when the door was closed (that is, the angle is zero). You take your pick. lol
@Loadedgoods
@Loadedgoods 2 года назад
I should also mention a 2x4 is actually 1.5x 3.5 it's not actually 2x4 inches.

@susandeshotel737 2 года назад
I may have missed this information in the video, but could you please tell me the measurement of the gap you left between the 2x4 rails for the gate and the post on the handle side?
@jessesmith2428
@jessesmith2428 2 года назад
Depends on the latch you use. If you use a hatchet latch you will need a 1” gap between rail and gate. Overlap your post picket 1/2” past your post and notch the picket so your latch will attach to the post. This will keep your gap a 1/2” while giving the 1” you need for your latch.

@adampizzi8870
@adampizzi8870 Год назад
He overlapped them, put a couple nails in to hold it, then he cut out and trashed the overlap, leaving him with two ends, which he applied as one. It works alright. I usually prefab the gates and set the posts accordingly to avoid any rips or custom sized pickets.
