How to Build a Goose House

We have some new additions on the way to the farm, so Chris needs to build a home for them. The basic design matches that of the duck house but stands a bit taller to give the geese a bit of head room. There are a few tweaks to make the coop a little better for us.

I cheated when I built my goose house, I actually have 2 of them now. I got 2 truck canopies that no one wanted and had a few issues I had to deal with. First one I got had a very soft roof. So I added a large piece of waterproof plywood to the inside of the canopy and cut 2 x4’s for the outside and screwed thru the inside plywood into the 2x4’s to sandwich it all together. There’s 3-2x4’s on the top. I didn’t stop there though, I added corrugated metal on top screwed to the 2x4’s. And I added 2x8’s on the very bottom of the canopy where it’s like sitting the canopy on a truck bed. Except the 2x8’s are screwed to the canopy to make it a permanent structure. Didn’t bother with a floor since the geese are so messy. With the 2x4’s on top, I can slide the forks accessory I have for my tractor and pick up the whole goose house and move it within a couple minutes. Then I add some sawdust I get from the feed store for the geese to lay on inside. The back canopy door still works s and can be locked shut. Geese can get out easily when I open the canopy door. I did get a heavy plastic ramp that sits outside the canopy door for the geese to be able to walk up and get inside easier. They of course have windows all the way around counting the canopy door and the 2 side window’s open. I added hardware cloth over all the windows to hopefully keep predators out. So far so good! Other canopy I plan on using for my ducks!

It is so nice having a handy man to build stuff. Travis is awesome and very smart when it comes to building helpful contraptions around the yard, it looks like Chris is too.

Do you need to close up your duck coop for the Colder weather? The open and front with hardware cloth is nice in the warmer weather. Just curious if it’s necessary to close it up better when it gets down to freezing or not? Does that become a problem for you where you live? Know my chickens coop I built is completely enclosed except the very top has vents all the way around and there’s also 2 windows on each side that open when it’s hot outside. Also added misters on the roof to help keep it cooler in the hot summers too that does make a difference in temperature inside the coop to keep it cooler keeping the top of the roof wet with cold water. Also used white metal on the roof that helps reflect the sun’s heat too. Darker roofs suck in the heat, so I avoided the dark roof! I just acquired some geese and ducks myself as babies I have in my garage for now in cattle water containers that I’m using as a home for the babies. Have two containers since I have baby chicks too and the ducks and geese get their containers way too wet for chickens. Ducks and geese have their own container now. Got to get their permanent home done before they get too large for their garage containers to live in! I’m working on a idea I had turning a truck canopy into a duck or geese home. If you look around you can find cheap or even a free canopy that I already acquired a free one! Should save a lot on cost building them a home? Was going to put the ducks and geese together till I just learned the geese will eat the duck eggs. We can’t have that now can we? 😂 looks like another home is in the making now after all! Btw, do you build any type of nesting box for your ducks or geese? Do they use nesting boxes?
@LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm
In winter we cover the wire with plywood inserts to keep the wind off of them and give them hay to hunker down in. My ducks prefer to nest outside of a nest box, so I give them hay on the bottom of their house.

What is the weather where you're at? We have fairly chilly winters here in Western Washington sometimes with a couple weeks of snow, wondering if something like this would work for our geese and ducks, but concerned about the cold.

In the winter we screw wood covers over most of the hardware cloth to protect the ducks/geese from wind. And we give them lots of hay. We get down in the teens and get snow.

Ha! Yeah, she helped a lot, but most of the footage ended up on the cutting room floor, things like her back standing between the camera and the goose house. :)

If you go to lowes, the wheels by dewalt are labeled for steel, stainless steel, concrete, etc.

Screwed the roof in wrong. Need to put the screws on the ridges not the ditches. Itll leak water otherwise

My husband says “about 8, if they’re 8 ft long.” It’s been a while since we built it. He’s doing some mental math right now...

You can save some money if you have a table saw. You can “rip down” (cut in half lengthwise) 2x4s.

Why is this soooo small? Poor animals
@LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm
Because all they do is sleep in it. They go in at dusk, curl up in a nest and sleep. At dawn they are let out to roam the farm all 20+ acres. This shelter protects them from wind, rain, and predators while they sleep.

The "house" is so small. I hate to think of a big goose having to stay in there for very long - seems cruel.
@LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm
@LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm 5 лет назад
They don’t stay in it! They go in at night to lay down and sleep, then are let out at sunrise. They have free range of our entire farm all day long.

In the wild a goose would have a nest by the pond or lake. We have predators around our farm, so we put their nest in this house to keep them safe from predators.

Does this house gonna prevent goose from coyotes? Thanks
@LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm
@LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm 4 года назад
Yes, it does. it's locked up at night and the coyotes can't get in. Just make sure you use "hardware cloth" and not chicken wire. We learned that chicken wire will keep birds in, but will not keep predators out.

In the wild a gooses would have a nest near a lake. This house is only for them to sleep in overnight so they will be protected from predators. They roam free around our farm from sunrise to sunset. It is very strong, still after more than four years of daily use. It withstands our strongest winds, and I can climb all over it without causing any damage.

I'll get exact measurements soon, but from memory, I know the tall end is three feet high and the back is two feet high. I'll post back in a day or two with the rest of the dimensions.
