Didn't sound like Mastodon to me, but yeah, that solo was just fine, as it was. Wouldn't say it was ignoring the chord prigression, either. It had a fair amount of chord tones.
Great example of "Serve the Song" is Kirk Hammett's opening solo on Fade To Black, it delivers the quiet, down-ish sound, and with the cold feeling to the tone it just sounds like someone crying
3. Freebird is the exception : it changes the meaning of the song by being completely off. BUT this change is anticipated by the tempo quickening and the line "Won't you fly, freebird...". Original idea there.
I love guitar solos that follow a melodic direction. Any Kirk Hammett solo ever from every metallica record before 1991. He follows the melody like his life depends on it. When he's done shredding, he goes back into the melody, when he's bored of the melody, he goes back into shredding. Just listen to Creeping Death, Blackened, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, or Disposable heroes.
don't be fooled he's using hypnotic anchoring of specific words .. like listening to The Beatles, "Revolution 9" backwards to sub-communicate his true agenda...
My bro you deserve to have a few million subscribers!! You’re so good and I’ve learned a heap! It’s been one year since I started to focus on leads and I went from the Nothing else maters solo to sweep picking like a god. You played a major role in helping me to play leads.
I just started watching your videos, but I love them. You're hilarious and brilliant. I hope big things come your way in music and life. You deserve it!
I love this guy so much! I am heading your word Senpai! This really opened my eyes to soloing. Needless to say that part where you said spot whats wrong I wasnt able to. I liked the solo and thats when I realized that my approach has been wrong. Thank you so much man!
The solo in Tarnished Gluttony by Job for a Cowboy does a good job with all these points. Listens to the rest of the song, ebbs and flows, and continues to be played into the next verse with a buttery smooth transition
i don't understand so much English but I really fascinated with your content, RU-vid algorithms brought me up your videos. cheers from Chile ❤ (sorry for my english hahaha)
What a whole lotta fun (riffing Zep) This stuff is bang on You can play, and muchos importante, provide clear instructional bullet points to nail the reasons why stuff works! No insult but you've got a Robert Baker style vibe, but gain extra credit being a Brit. Awesome. Gonna click Subscribe...
I would love to see a video with the stuff that does not make your videos. A cutting room floor or outtakes if you will. The Mr Big at the end cracked me up!
There´s also one more thing I would add to your points. Learn to play melody of the in different positions on the neck. It´ll open up the entire guitar in the end and force your to leave playing in the same scale position behind. Also, integrating two scale positions into one and playing over that helps a bunch too, specially if you wanna make arpeggios more interesting
I wonder if you could help me with this question. This video is about soloing over power chords. My question is about arpeggiating over power chords. If you have a sustained power chord ringing out you only have two notes ringing out the root and the fifth, if you wanted to arpeggiate with a clean guitar tone over a power chord how would you approach it? If you just play the notes the root and the fifth clean on the second clean guitar you are not giving yourself much to work with. Basically I want to add some atmospheric clean guitar Arpeggios over a first guitar playing heavy sustained power chords.
Absolute genius, i think everything ive been doing, that i thought sounded great is actually bad. You just proves it elegantly on this video. Ps I like your take on the Megadeth solos !!! I just created a method on mastering chords but its unfinished and i hope to keep evolving my lessons, Youre an inspiration bruvmiestro!!!!!
I gave up on guitar, sadly, since I couldnt get the focus required. But even then, I've never felt like playing solos (except some simple melodic stuff), I've always felt super into heavy riffing instead. Each to their own. :3
Every point should be point number 1. Learning the chords positions throughout the neck was far more useful to me than learning scales, which I spent too much time practicing and using to noodle aimlessly.
4:38 as a listener, I don't see any problem with the solo (other than it was cut short, i would expect one more bend and then finishing it with somehow)
Great video. In regards to your comment about famous songs with inappropriate solos, would you be interested in doing a video to elaborate? I think it would be interesting
