This week I talk through my point motors for the model railway layout.
I show you what you will need to solder and wire your motors, ready to be installed on the layout.
I show you how the point motor works, and what wires go where.
In this video, I am showing you my progress of building a model railway in the loft. From the very start of converting the loft into a useable space, right through to the continuous building of the layout.
I hope you enjoy the video and find it useful in some way.
Please feel free to comment and subscribe, thank you!

G'day Tony, I'm uncertain if you're still monitoring this channel, but if you are, I just wanted to pass on my gratitude for being so patient in explaining what you are doing. I don't profess to be a RU-vid genius but the latest video I could find was dated two and a half years ago, so whilst I would love to hear back from you, as I mentioned earlier, I'm not certain if you have later videos or how far you got from here with your layout. Best wishes from Australia.

Hi Tony Many thanks for the reply it is really appreciated and I know you must get many requests. Yes I understand what you are saying. The peco polnts I have are the old electrofrog polnts type which I will have to solder a wire to the frog but I can't see where I have to cut underneath and solder two connecting wires. Perhaps if you get any time perhaps you might do a video on this. Many thanks again and congrats on your new arrival Mike

Hi Michael, no problems! I'm sure I did cover it in either Episode 10, 11 or 12. But If I didn't I'll try and put a little video together on it. In a nutshell, it needs to be the blades that are connected to the main rails, and the whole frog area needs to be dead, so that when you connect the frog wire to it, it's power is determined by the point motor or polarity switcher.

Good video, very well explained, nice to see someone provide a sketch of what's happening.Myself I went with DCC Concept motors, living in Western Australia, I got answers quickly to where I was going wrong!Great stuff Tony, you're really motoring along.Richard

Richard Swallow - Thank you, I appreciate that! I tend to find actually drawing it out helps me understand it, and see what I’m doing! Ahhh, yeah there are plenty of good motors out there, and very handy you were able to get such quick troubleshooting! Thank you again, I appreciate your support!

An excellent video Tony. This is very well explained, one of the best I've seen. It has given me confidence to wire my seep motors now a task I was not looking forward to. I particularly like the point motor tester you have made, a great idea. Thank you, well done.

Walton Cave - Thank you! I really appreciate that! I’m glad you found it useful! I have a new video out at 3pm today covering wiring and I touch on connecting the SEEP’s to the bus wires etc. Thank you again, and good luck with your point motors, let me know how it goes!

Certainly organised there sir ....led essentials one of my favourites....a little tip which might be of use use bootlace ferrules on the wire ends for screw in connections ... also wago quick release connectors ....makes life a whole lot easier took me an age to realise this ....thanks for the vid ...regards Fred

Ah .. the wonder of point motors. I spent the back end of last year leaning back under my baseboard fitting all of those! Not my favourite part of building a layout ... I hope you have more fun with it than I did!

Vintage 80s Loft Model Railway - it’s definitely more tedious than I imagined! Especially when I have 26 to do! That’s why I’ve been taking my time and just doing a few at a time and having a break in between!

Very nice "how too" Tony. I would always use a CDU to better control the point motors, and protect the coil...Simon

Simon -Liverton Central - Thank you, yeah I agree. I knew I wanted them, just got lucky finding two at a good price. May just need to get one more, but I’ll see how it goes wiring everything up!

Hi Tony,Due to my lack of knowledge, new to the game, decided to go for Cobalt motors.No decoders or CDU required , and worked with Railmaster.I did purchase couple Peco motors, still in there packets, thought it might be too hard to install.Very happy with Colbalt motors all 15 on the layout.Even though I live in Australia 3 hour journey from DCC Concepts, I purchased through Hattons, cheaper including postage. No discount here. Most purchases are from uk, to bloody expensive from retailers here.Richard.

Richard Swallow - I was also looking at those motors originally, but when I saw the price for needing 26 of them, I nearly had a heart attack haha! I’m happy I went with seeps though, it’s harder work, but I’m enjoying the project of installing them!

Tony don't know if you know the cable specs but 14/030 is 14 strands at 0.030 mm each strand. Also I've used them on 28/030 cable . 14/030 is 8.75 amp rated And 28/030 is 17.5 amps.. Hope this helps.. good luck..

Great video Tony. I work for a company that sell to the automotive trade and must say that the RED suitcase connectors are not in my opinion the best.. Blue " scotch locks as they're known are far better for cables up to cable size 14 /030 .

John Cresswell - Thank you! I will need to connect 16/0.2 to 32/0.2 so will the blue ones still work?

Great update Tony look forward to the next instalment . In my experience them red connection blocks are more trouble than they are worth so my recommendation would be to solder you dropper wires to the bus loop.
@TonyDocksStation
@TonyDocksStation 6 лет назад
Brian - Thanks for your comment! Yeah a few people have said the same thing. I’m going to be looking at a few other options people have suggested. Seeing as I have the red splice blocks already, I might do some testing and see what’s what. But if I have problems with any of the options available, I will inevitably end up soldering underneath the baseboard!

Them things a always used to fit towbars on cars and other stuf they are a pain in the back side when electrical issues arise.

Its up to you tony its your layout at the end of the day but here are my finding to justify my issue with them clips. They are prone to damp getting inside. When you crimp the wires in the blade doesn't always cut through the insulation causing a bad or no connection. If accidentally caught the wire will pull out. In my own opinion they are more trouble than they are worth but try it crimp a wire and pull it . Good luck tony and if you do solded it you will probably end up like me hating soldering lol but perfectly running track.

Great video. Good to see another explanation into how it works. I found RU-vid lacked descriptive videos on this - most explaining part of it. I took to making a full video in 2 parts showing how the polarity switching works on the point motors and on the point too. Congratulations on over 300 subs. Come on very quick only seems like yesterday you was a new channel with 10 subs lol. Tim

The-scrap-line Model railway weathering - Thank you, I’m glad it came out understandable. I was really worried I haven’t explained it well enough lol! I will be sure to check out your videos on it then, make sure I haven’t missed anything! And thank you! Yeah it’s been so great, and I am so grateful for all the support!

Tony Docks Station always the well descripted and regular videos that draw in crowds.. I've sub'd to so many channels and there's only a handful I enjoy watching - yours is one! One of the biggest reasons I've pulled off posting videos for a couple of months is because I haven't covered enough to produce a decent update and part 3 build series (backscenes) is only partly filmed.. so hanging back to roll 3 new videos towards the end of this month and that then seems to boost new subs.

The-scrap-line Model railway weathering - Wow, really? Thanks! That really awesome and means a lot to me! I’ve been following your progress and envy your ability to have an open frame and reverse loops! I’ll look forward to your new videos coming up then! In terms of getting new subs, I’m still learning how RU-vid works, it’s all trial and error for me at the moment lol!

Tony Docks Station. Elevated sections are the worse bit.. if the board that's cut isn't spot on then it's a case of taking it apart right back down to the frame work and start again. Planning is vital as with a table top layout, if the track isn't right then all you need to move is the track. It's time consuming! The bench work was very easy. My guesses are everard is on this part right now hence a huge gap from the last video..

The-scrap-line Model railway weathering - It sounds brutal! I was debating about going open framed for mine when I started, but I’m so glad I went table top. Only because I don’t think I have the skills yet, but I’d like to try it in the future sometime! Yeah I was thinking the other day it’s been a while since his last video, I’m looking forward to seeing it actually!

Hi Tony I've really enjoyed watching your videos they are very helpful. I recently watched installing point motors from Everard Junction which was very similar to your video. However he connected his green wire to one of the frogs. Now this is why I'm confused because on the peco electrofrog points they already have wire attached which he did not connect also he did not cut the rail underneath the point or solder some wire as per instructions. I have tried to contact Everard for some clarification but no reply after 3 months. Can you therefore advise what connections cuts etc you make on your points also how do you wire up your 3 way points. Many thanks Mike T
@TonyDocksStation
@TonyDocksStation 6 лет назад
Apologies for the late reply! I'm slowly catching up with everyone! From what I understand, Peco changed the style of their points. So, it depends on which ones you have. Some need the modification, and some don't. That little wire pre-attached to the newer points is exactly the same as the green wire. Just that not all of them have that little wire and so need the green wire soldered on. Hope that make's sense. 3 way points are just two points basically, so wire it up as 2 separate points and it's pretty straight forward!

hi can you still use electrofrog points just for a dc layout,and if so how.great vid by the way.thx mark.

Yes you can, I’m sure they just work with no adaptions. But, read the instructions at the back as it explains exactly how to do it!
