Horizontal backboards means you can’t get the curve that makes for a more comfortable feel. Like the simple design though.

I have been planning on making one of these and I love what you did with it. I have a couple questions if you don't mind. Were the 2x4 pressure treated or raw? What wood did you use for the seat and back? Did you seal it after you painted it?
@houseoftimbers
@houseoftimbers 3 года назад
Thank you! I just bought raw 2X4 and the seats are a 1X10 pine. Because it's not pressure treated I definitely recommend using exterior grade paint and sealer. I used a waterproof wood finish on the whole project. Good Luck!

Hi I have a question about your drum sander please. It looks like it only can rise up high enough (i did some googling) to sand the wide sides of the 2x4 and not the narrow sides. You dealt with this by ripping off edges of the boards. If you wanted to sand those narrow edges what would you do? Is there a different sander? Thank you. New to this and just did one of these chairs with a palm sander (and it was a lot of work :-)
@houseoftimbers
@houseoftimbers 3 года назад
Thanks for commenting! You're right about the drum sander. I personally use the hand sander for the edges, but make sure you're using the right grit of paper, are selective of the 2X4, and have a quality palm sander. The only other option I'm aware of is using a planer. It's similar to the drum sander, but it cuts rather than sands and can go higher than the 3" of the sander. It would take off very rough edges, but even then would probably require some hand sanding as well. Its also a bit pricey if you are just starting out, I don't have one yet. I've learned that sanding is just a necessary evil lol. I joke that every project I do is 90% sanding and 10% everything else. Let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck!

I know it's traditional but I always think the sloping seat is wrong, the first one I made, I couldn't get out of it without help, so I lifted the back legs by 2inches and moved the armrests to suit, now I see videos by WOOD magazine on RU-vid calling them Tall Adirondack chairs,,!

I am confused how you know how much to cut off for that 90 degree off of the 20 degree angle. Do they both just have to be the same amount? Or is there something else?

How have these held up? I’m considering building some but wondering if 2x6 would be a better option
@houseoftimbers
@houseoftimbers 3 года назад
They've been great! The 2X4 are plenty sturdy and hold up well. They are heavy as is, so I'd keep that in mind.

would it be ok to use pocket screws to attach the front legs to the arms at the butt joint? I noticed Ana White did the same thing in her video that you did. Thanks for the video 😊
@houseoftimbers
@houseoftimbers 3 года назад
Absolutely! That would work just as well. Then you would not have the holes on top. I have considered plugging the holes with a pine dowel for a little more visual effect/design.

I'm assuming squaring off your 2x's changed some of your measurements?
@houseoftimbers
@houseoftimbers 3 года назад
It didn't change them significantly, but you definitely want to adjust measurements based on how you mill the boards. I don't believe the plans I linked use squared off material.

Have the 1x10s held up? I'm nervous they don't have a lot of support by themselves. Would hate for a guest to breakthrough.
@houseoftimbers
@houseoftimbers 2 года назад
They work great! The width span is so small that there is no flex in it at all. I haven't had a problem and they are holding up great over a yr later.

So the most difficult part of the job was not explained. How did you solve the problem of clamping the angled boards ?
@houseoftimbers
@houseoftimbers 4 года назад
You're right! I held the angle piece upright on top of the 2x4 and drilled a temporary screw from the top of the angle piece to secure it enough to pocket hole. This screw is covered by the seat slat and doesn't show. I took a pic but can't seem to attach it to this message. Hopefully that makes sense.
@diegudr
@diegudr 4 года назад
OK thanks. I think I will try that. I was thinking of all kinds of ways to hold those two boards together after watching you and your husband struggle and couldn't think of a solution. Anyway like my dad always told me "there is always more that one way to do something in woodworking." Anyway figuring out how to solve little problems like this makes woodworking fun.

Hi, what 2 by 4 material ?
@houseoftimbers
@houseoftimbers 4 года назад
Hi George! This is made with pine. I recommend using quality exterior paint and sealer if you use pine and plan to use them outdoors. Otherwise you can spend a bit more for exterior grade wood such as cedar or redwood.

I love to see a woman using power tools but your credibility is a bit weak! It bothers me to see small children around large power tools, no safety gear, & woodworking in flip flops? Really?! For their safety I won't let my grandkids anywhere near when I'm using power tools! And I most definitely wear shoes to protect my feet! I applaud having a helpful spouse. You are very blessed! Try being safer!!
