How To Build a Modern Horizontal Privacy Fence - DIY Friendly Project

In this video we will show you how to build a modern horizontal privacy fence, and this is an easy enough project to DIY at your own home if you have some basic tools and know-how. We used ProWood DuraColor lumber which is treated with a colorant to give it a brown tone instead of the typical bright yellow that comes with standard pressure treated southern yellow pine. Fence installation can be pretty simple but there are a few key things we show you in this video to make sure you are on the right track.

Loved ❤️ this instructional video Very informative, organized and clear. Well demonstrated ! I really liked the quality of the wood you chose and the durability of the material . The way you staggered the boards on opposite sides added a great touch for the privacy aspect. I also appreciated the craftsmanship in structuring the fence. Longevity is always important. Continue to put out quality work and videos, I’m about to definitely follow your blueprint for my fence project and get “Locked in for Justice “

2 comments--for another $15 per post we use 4 X 6's (only on high end fence) which adds tons of strength and doubles the life of the fence. The other comment is that you screw the client when you put dirt back into the hole on top of concrete. This encases the post in moisture every time it rains, and for days after...your posts will fail quickly (at least twice). We fill the concrete to approx 2 inches above grade so that the post doesn't sit in a bathtub. I was surprised when I saw what you were doing because your projects are always top quality.

Looks great, I would suggest when setting the posts to have the post close to the string, like 1/8” or so, and keep it consistent. The danger of actually touching the string is influencing the string during the run of posts and can actually cause an an “arch” in the line of posts. The longer the run of posts, the more of a chance this could happen. Keep the videos rolling, we are getting more into building decks and love that information you share.
@sandycoyman3891
@sandycoyman3891 2 года назад
Best approach with a string line is to offset the line with a 3/4" or other size block at both ends and then take another same size block and use it as a gauge between the string and the post you are setting. This way you can get each post exactly in line

Could you feasibly do this with an 8' tall fence instead of 6'? I know the posts would probably have to be 12', with 4' in the ground, but would that be too much weight on the posts? I would probably only put horizontal boards on one side of the fence and not leave 1/2" gaps (you know, crazy lumber prices right now).

In the UK it’s more common practice to fill the hole entirely with concrete, then create a ‘slope’ away from the post otherwise the post will rot very quickly at ground level. Also treat the bottom of posts with bitumen tar paint. Will last 25yrs+ easy then. Nice looking fence though otherwise and love all your other work! 👍

That isn’t common around here, we get a lot of longevity from ground contact treated lumber and there is also very sandy soil here which will not hold wayer
@elephantsonpatrol
@elephantsonpatrol 3 года назад
@@THEpremieroutdoor UK gets a heck of a lot of rainfall too I suppose. Backfilling with gravel is sometimes done on very large holes, so will likely have the same effect as the sandy soil you mention. You probably get better treated timber/lumber than we do too tbh. For example, I see a lot of 6x6 posts in use in your videos, yet this is rare here. They only get used for gate posts and occasional high-end gazebo’s etc. 99% of decking, pergolas etc is done in 4x4 posts. Or patio is more prevalent.

@StuckInTheM1ddle
@StuckInTheM1ddle 3 года назад
If it's general pre-treated wood then no you don't need to add anything. The wood will naturally change/weather to a new colour though over time (silver/grey) so if you wanted to keep the original colour/tone of the wood you'd want to protect with a UV protection oil. Some woods are naturally resistent and don't need pre-treatment (Western Red Cedar) but they will also weather to a different colour so again at a minimum you might want the UV oil if you wanted to keep the warm colour of the cedar.

Build it in place. Install horizontal wood on outside, but inner side frame it, install your diagonal piece on both gates, hinges might be a problem if you are using the 2" boards up top, but install hinges, then cut the wood from outside where hinges are right in between the framed lumber (where gates meet). Then you left a 1/2" spacer for each picket board which adds another 8 5", and you left approximately 4" space at the bottom that you later covered with a 4x2. Which means it's more like a 7 foot fence. Not criticizing you, just trying to figure the actual height since im building one in a couple months.
