How do you start to build a modern mudhouse? Join us on our journey as we build a modern mud house! This mudhouse is a single room with a veranda, toilet and attic room that takes up a total size of 4mx8m (32sqm). Only 10% of the consturction uses concrete with another 10% used by metal for the roof structure. The remaining 80% is mud and rice husk.
The mud was dug right out of the earth nearby the house, which has now become a wild elephant watering hole. A total of 1350 mud bricks were used to construct the mud house. Additional material used to complete the house were wood frames for the windows and doors.

Can these walls be waterproof as well?

We would say water resistant...but not proof. After some time the tapioca flour will start to fade away. But its been 3 years and its just about to fade for us. Putting on more than one coat of the tapioca flour mixture cud maybe make it waterproof.

Can saw dust be used in place of rice husk?

Thats a good question. One of the main purposes of the rice husk is to act as a binder. So technically it is possible that you could try with saw dust. Just be extra mindful of temites in your area. Make sure your foundation has lime layer to prevent them eating the wood thats in the bricks. Do let us know how it goes if you try it out.
