One suggestion I have for next time is, when doing the background you can get plastic potting cups for plants. With them you can place them at an angle so you can have plants drape down on the background. I would recommend plants like Pothos and safe ivy for that. You can also put non vining plants back there. It’s just to really fill up the space.

Also note for future upgrades, when you carve out the foam, any areas that don’t get carved and stay smooth, the silicone won’t stay in place as long and will fall off over time. So yes definitely best to overspray and then carve out the excess, but also carve every inch so the silicone has a rough surface to adhere to.

Hey the tank looks beautiful!! I have only one question . Why didn’t you put a drainage layer ? I’m not dissing your work or anything I’m just sincerely curious because I’ve always seen people put a drainage layer for a bio active
@lydiaeddins2083
@lydiaeddins2083 5 лет назад
I don't know her personal reasoning, but a drainage layer isn't absolutely necessary if you only need to maintain humidity (and those plants do well with a little dryer soil than some others). But if you are keeping a species that likes it really wet, or if you are concerned about unintentionally flooding your plants/animal if you add too much water, a drainage layer is then necessary. The drainage layer will just give extra water a place to go, but if you are careful watering, an enclosure can do without one.
@alyssagrowden5168
@alyssagrowden5168 5 лет назад
She’s using the bio bedding from Josh’s frogs which is specifically formulated by them to not need a drainage layer as it acts as it’s own sort of thing. But yea reptiles etc where u would be concerned about standing water u would still need one I think 😊
@reptiliangarden
@reptiliangarden 5 лет назад
They all answered it perfectly. Because I don’t have an overly wet enclosure with a misting system and I’m using the joshs frogs biobedding, it works in itself as a drainage layer. It’s one of the reasons I love this substrate so much! I get to skip a step and not make a drainage layer

i would say if you could take metamora out for another 48-72 hours, it isn’t too late to use some more expanding foam around a few plastic pots in the back! you could just do that section around the pot, then carve and silicone, then plant a type of hanging/drooping plant like pothos! it’d also give her some additional enrichment and climbing areas going over and behind the plants!
@reptiliangarden
@reptiliangarden 5 лет назад
Mary Webb Thank you! I’ve gotten some suggestions about pinning vines along the back and eventually they’ll grow on their own. So I might try that!

@robertculen2949
@robertculen2949 4 года назад
I've done two trial runs of making backgrounds with the foam + silicone + cocofiber method, but even dry they still badly reek of silicone. Maybe I'm not being as diligent cutting up and flattening the foam so my coco coverings have not been perfect, but the entire backgrounds smell just as bad as the silicone straight from the caulking tube. Thoughts?
@alejandrorivera4727
@alejandrorivera4727 3 года назад
when you added the Silicone to the foam did it have a really strong smell? I am trying to build my own but when I applied the silicone I think it created a reaction with a really strong smell, it almost burned my nostrils and eyes. I am scared it will hurt the snake. Is there a special combination of foam and silicone I should be using? Or do I just have to wait until is fully cured? I checked the silicone in another place and it dint smell neither did the foam so I believe is the combination of them creating some rection.

Awesome video! She's such a stunning snake, I love her coloring. Anyways, I had a question hope you don't mind my asking. I'm currently in the process of saving and researching up on getting my first snake. I'm getting a baby male BRB. And I was looking into a bioactive setup. I've had a few people tell me not to a bioactive setup just yet, seeing I'm just getting into snakes. But personally, I really like the aesthetic and feel like it gives the snake so much enrichment. Plus it really helps retain humidity, which is great for BRBs especially babies. I just however have a few questions, about it. Like how you 'clean' and maintain bioactive set up? And what do you use to help with heating? That's the one thing I'm most concern about is heating. Seeing that most videos I watch with bioactive setups, don't mention anything about heat sources. I hope these questions aren't stupid, I just want to make sure I give my future noodle an amazing life and setup.
@reptiliangarden
@reptiliangarden 5 лет назад
Hayley Rohrbacher Not stupid at all! Bioactive setups will usually require lighting especially if you are looking to use live plants. A low wattage uvb, or an LED light would do the job. You can then choose to use an over the head heat bulb, or you can use a heat pad from underneath for the warm side!

It might sound counterintuitive because they’re arboreal but green tree pythons need a wider tank with ample ground space. They naturally descend from the trees and hunt on the ground at night, so they need that space to stretch out and roam at night. This tank isn’t suitable as there is almost no ground space at all.

Is there a reason you did away from doing a false bottom? Usually a humid environment needs a false bottom due to all the misting. Will eventually make the dirt muddy and drown your plants roots intern rotting. Which is bad. I would consider doing a creeping plant to climb the back area that you say Is bare. A tip would be getting a full spectrum light to help your pants flourish! It looks great overall!
@reptiliangarden
@reptiliangarden 5 лет назад

@cherridavion1634
@cherridavion1634 5 лет назад
That mix that she used from Josh's Frogs doesn't really need a false bottom I have watched her watering habits and I think she will be fine you don't have to soak the soil to get the humidity correct she has a very large water bowl and that's soil has very good drainage she will be fine with the way it is. I don't have a drainage layer in any of my bioactive enclosures, I have never had a single problem with my plants and my humidity is always on point. People that have a heavy-handed watering technique need a drainage layer if you understand how to water properly then you can get by without one.

@@cherridavion1634 if it worked for you wonderful. I don't use a heavy hand so there is that. I still had the issue. Sure your first couple of months to a year it may work. However I've had mine for 2 years and it failed. I had to add a drainage layer. The plants need water at the root which is in the dirt pretty deep. You have to soak it for them to get water correctly. Put a bunch of plants in and your dirt is going to get wet. Where is that xtra water to go? Anyways again if it worked for you wonderful. I'm just giving my experiences with a no drainage layer needed. I will say for aired enviroments it's great!

@@jesenia8940 I don't have an arid environment I have two ball pythons actually and my Kenyan sand boa is kind of arid but they're all bioactive. I do mix my own soil so each mixture has exactly what it needs so it won't fail.

Looks great, but it seems very exposed. I would add a hide or two so she has a nice place to decompress 🐍
