I gotta be honest… I’ve never messed with computer stuff in my life. I want to learn but I’m already 7 minutes in and more confused than you can possibly imagine…
This guy is a genius and makes everything very simple. If you are having problems following him then a little light research on how computers work. If you’re still having troubles, just buy a pre-built system and don’t stress it. There are some fairly good buys out there. I’m 61 and just finished my first computer build and if I can do it, anyone can 👍

Hey there, {{3}}! I'm glad you found the post helpful. Building a PC can be a really exciting project. As a fellow tech enthusiast myself, I recently came across the HOTO Compressed Air Capsule and I must say, it's been a game-changer for keeping my desk clean and maintaining my PC. The vacuum and blowing capabilities are impressively powerful, and the multiple tubes and high-quality filters ensure long-lasting performance. Definitely worth checking out if you're interested in optimizing your setup!
As a bit more seasoned PC builder, I also find this video very useful. For a different reason: I can refer beginners to this, because I know Paul does a great job at explaining the basics of understanding PC components and assembling them into a built PC. It can help them build some confidence in doing the job themselves. While I don't assemble many PCs myself, I like staying up-to-date and giving PC build advices even to complete strangers. There are other channels that are well suited for beginners (e.g. last time I checked LTT, it aimed at fairly casual audience), but I still think Paul did an exceptionally good job at conveying the basics in a video that is still fairly short (even some meme compilations, clickbait and other attention hijacking junk can run much longer).
Hello! I am just getting to building my first PC, and I've noted most of building PC guides don't really include how to look for the particular parts, and only how to put them together. This was extremely helpful, I feel I learned a lot from your video, and I am excited to be learning even more from your channel! Let's do it!
Hey there! I see you're interested in PC building and maintenance. Have you heard about the HOTO Compressed Air Capsule? It's a compact and powerful tool for keeping your desktop clean. With its vacuuming and blowing capabilities, it's great for maintaining a spotless environment. Plus, it's reasonably priced compared to other brands. Worth checking out!
Yeah, I can say I enjoyed watching it. Not that I've learned much new. It was more like listening to poetry. It's clear and concise. It's very nicely explained even for first time builders. And it gets them on the level where they can already ask smarter questions :)
Hey Paul, I should have written this a long time ago but I owe you a huge debt of gratitude. Learning about DIY PC building and building my first PC in 2020 got me through a very difficult time in my life (it wasn't just C****D). These in-depth tutorials for beginners are so important for making the hobby accessible to newcomers and it's great to see an updated version.
Hey! I'm glad you found the in-depth guides helpful! If you're looking to optimize your desktop setup, I recommend considering the HOTO Compressed Air Capsule. It offers powerful vacuuming and blowing capabilities to maintain a spotless environment and is quite reasonably priced compared to other brands. Give it a shot! Have any other questions or need more recommendations? Feel free to ask! 👍
still remember mine as well, going through forums and oc sites, internet wasnt a thing so extra money spent to icafes, guess those limitations built good habits
Even though I feel very comfortable with building a computer, I just can't help but watch more building tutorials/videos to help keep my brain sharp when people around me ask for my thoughts on builds
It’s awesome to see how Paul’s “How-to build a PC” series has evolved over time. It’s wild to think that just a decade ago builds used to have HDDs with a tiny SSD for the OS.
I don't know why I like watching these videos, I know how to build a computer, but its almost like doing the peel from the glass when I watch these how to build guides. I really enjoy these Paul keep them going....I'll keep watching them.
This is so nostalgic, i watched your old how to build series when i was building my first PC in 2017 and right now im looking to upgrade but i totally forgot how to build a PC from scratch, thank you for all the quality content you released throughout the years Paul!
I HAVE to say a huge thank you. ❤ I am so glad I came across you. Your confident delivery and ability to detail is exactly the guidance I need! I watched my ex and his friends build multiple rigs and I really wanted to learn too. I was just not able to jump in. My lifestyle didn't allow for time to game. I've made it a priority for this coming new year to learn and build my own so I can finally enjoy the one hobby I have. I haven't been able to play for so long.... I am looking forward to taking the time and energy this year. This is truly life changing information for me. So again. Thanks for being awesome. 😊
Thank you so much for this video. I’m completely new to PC building and was looking for a video that breaks down each component and the important specs to look for. I took notes and it was easy to follow along
Ive never felt so stupid when watching other videos on the same topic. This is the first one where I was actually able to understand and retain the information. I now feel like I have the base level of understanding required to do research for my optimal build. Thank you.
As someone how has been thinking about building a PC this is THE BEST Video I have come across yet! I am sooo happy to finally get a basic understanding of what is what and the way you explain is amazing! Thank you
Thx for doing these videos. Back in 2020, I built the “$1000 PC everyone should build” you posted, based on the B450 Tomahawk Max/Ryzen 5 3600X/EVGA NVIDIA 2060. It’s still the best computer I ever had (and still use). I’m looking forward to the next build (like this one) in the future.
This video has the best explanation on what cores and threads do that I have been able to find (in the most simple terms as possible) TY Paul for the work you do and sharing your tech knowledge
Used your last video to build me and my girlfriend our first gaming PCs. Huge respect for how clear you make your videos without being patronising so we can rewatch and keep up with the new stuff for when we eventually upgrade :)
Yesssss!!!! Exactly what i needed this year this series is perfect ohh my gosh! Got a 7900xt at 700$ so i feel good building new but i need to know if i want am4 still or if i rehab my old system and build a fresh am5 system since i have the money. I also feel WAY better about upping to official windows 11 once and for all and getting my higher end pc rig ready for the next 5 years of my gaming journey cause the last 5 years on my 1080 have been insane as i watch rt and dlss from the background
This is excellent. One thing I would add that immensely helped me when choosing parts for my very first computer build in 2017. Benchmarks. You mention all of the aspects of CPUs and GPUs with aspects of their performance (P/E cores, or Cuda and Tensor cores for GPUs). A MUCH simpler way to decide between two GPUs in the price range you're willing to pay is compare benchmarks. For general purpose (not necessarily gaming), I just use the passmark benchmarks. Comparing benchmarks of current and last gen components will help decide components for 99% of first time builders.
One of my coworkers sent me a link to one of your videos as you're one of few people he watches for build guides. Im thankful he did. I've learned more from this one vid than the handful of others i watched. Definitely subbing! Thank you paul. You're videos are gonna help me build my first gaming pc 😁 cheers!
Thank you for the great video! I appreciate your teaching ability, and you have inspired me to keep researching to build my own first gaming pc when I felt like giving up. Thanks again, and I'm looking forward to learning more from you!
Just starting to get into pc building lest i get left behind by my gaming buddies. I will be saving this video for near future views as i explore more people and ideas to listen to. Thanks much!
While I am absolutely not the target audience for this I can still appreciate this. Easier to send less knowledgeable friends this link than try and explain it all myself. Also love this video. Really great for beginners or intermediates. Keep up the good work. Pretty certain that the original series is what got me through my first PC build during covid. So super happy there's an update.
I've recently started doing research to build my first PC, primarily to be used for GIS and Geomatics processes (plus Photo Editing and Gaming). So far, this is possibly the best explanation I've come across for what each of the 'basic' parts does and how they work together. You use easy to understand language that even laymen can understand and now I have a better understanding of what each part of the computer does beyond 'The RAM makes applications work faster' and 'The CPU does things and is important'. Thanks very much!
Thank you so much for this. I’m completely ignorant about PC hardware and it’s function. I’ve finally decided to build my PC and I know what parts I need but nothing about their purpose and the specs I should look for to meet my usage needs.
This is a great update. Simple and concise. Used the last one and hope the other in this series give us pointers on what to put in with the current generation of stuff
I will finally this year, I swear, replace my computer from 2010. This video is such a helpful reference for first-time builders like me. Some information I knew, but a lot I didn't, and it's all in one place, so I'm sure I'll be peeking at it again and again. I am really looking forward to the rest of this series.
Omg I’m such a newbie and this video easily explains everything so well. Now I understand what the parts really do and what to look for so I can build. Thank you!
Very few things I find more pleasant after work than watching someone talk about building a PC. I really needed this video. I see also that you have 2 more after in the series. I'm watching them now.
tysm for explaining the basics of each part. I had to write an essay on pc hardware but I'm not that interested in it so I didn't know what all the acronyms meant and which specs were the most important so thanks, you just saved my grade
I know this is from last year, but this made me pull up my PC Part Picker page and comb through each part I (kind of randomly) chose and read into them more closely. I'm building a PC for the first time and I'm a little daunted, but I'm excited to watch more of your videos after watching this excellent breakdown. Thank you!
Extremely helpful… not even building a PC because I am bound to screw it up, but its important to know what pre-built I buy and what exactly the heck it is I am buying!!!! Especially the upgrade ability with PCI 4-5 etc.
I’ve been considering building my first pc as a gift to my wife and your video has given me so much confidence to do it after almost losing hope seeing other much more complicated videos out there. You have an excellent way of explaining things and use such great analogies that make it easy to understand. Thank you, i’m very excited to order the parts and build it soon!
@@bwunangel thanks! Ordering the parts tomorrow 😁 its gonna be her surprise anniversary gift! About a month early, but i’m too excited to wait for the actual day and she’s been busting her butt in school this year so she deserves it 😅
Why do I always watch his building videos when he has taught me it all already? I think it's his video structure and instructional style. Thanks @Pauls's Hardware! You have literally saved me hundreds of dollars with your videos!
Much appreciation on breaking everything down. It is nice to be able to understand how everything functions and what certain terms mean. A thousand thanks.
Micro center is literally THE BEST community and environment it’s not just a store it’s like a club for gamers and tech nerds a-like. I have been going for 7 years and it hasn’t changed hardly a bit. Everytime I go it’s a great time and a torture to my wallet or self discipline 😂😂 they need *MORE MICRO CENTERS!*
Even if someone already knows the basics of computers, I really do recommend we all still regularly go to tutorials like this that are extremely in-depth and explain every last detail. It doesn't hurt to refresh the mind on how to do something!
Hey there! As a fellow tech enthusiast, I totally agree with you. In-depth tutorials and refreshing our knowledge are always valuable. By the way, have you heard of the HOTO Compressed Air Capsule? It's a handy tool that offers both vacuuming and blowing capabilities, perfect for maintaining a clean desk setup and more. Worth considering for your cleaning routine and organizing your space!
Thank you so much Paul. As someone who was tech illiterate especially in PC hardware and building, this video is super helpful and well presented in a way truly doe beginners (ive seen others and they used too mucy jargon and overcomplicate). Cant wait to build my gaming pc soon because of you 🤝
My current PC has finally kicked the bucket after a valiant stand! This guide could not have been timed better, thanks my man, valuable information as my next PC will be my first ever time building! Cheers.
As a seasoned PC enthusiast, I dont need a lesson on how to choose PC parts. But every once in a while, it's nice to sit through these "how to" tech videos that are very basic and in some cases, common knowledge videos. It's kind of like learning how to tie your shoes again.
PC building guide videos will always be in demand as there's always a new generation of builders awaiting their "pc building awakening" if you like. Your videos were an inspiration to me and I'm sure many others can relate to this. Keep up the great work!
DUDE!!! This video KICKS ASS!!!!!!!! Literally what I've been looking for! Doing my first PC build and needed a video explaining exactly what everything does. THANK YOU!
As someone who has been playing computer games most my life this was probably the first time someone managed to explain to me in a good, understandable and interesting way what the pieces actualyl do.
Hi Paul, for years I wanted to build my own computer. In 2019 I was finally able to do it thanks to your tutorials. I have no plans to build again, but I’ll be watching this series regardless. Thanks for the years of help and entertainment!
I am about to start my first build…. Really do not feel good going into this. I want a bad ass gaming computer.. I am sadly too ignorant in this field. I appreciate the help. Wish I had a guy like you around my neck of the woods.
Paul 6 years ago you helped me build my first ever computer from what I saved up from my last ever retail job. 6 years, 3 degrees, and my first real paycheck later, you're helping me all over again. Thank you so much for keeping the lights on all these years.
Great video! Thank you for all the detail. I am moving from an iMac to PC for photo editing in LR and hope to build my own PC. So your intel is very helpful for this beginner. Thank you again. Joseph
good timing. My daughter is just about to tear down an old work computer and may want to build her own next so this will be a good fallback guide if/when I get too stressed being IT support :)
any tips for getting matched parts - I tend to use forums and pc part picker but its odd that you often need personal recommendations as things can be so finicky
Where is the super like button?... Thank you for making this! I generally understood the "putting it together" bit of making a PC, but this has explained the jargon which I never really got.
This is actually a perfect explainer. I’m very interested in building my first machine and you’ve explained a LOT of what I was simply too stumped about. Now to move on to the actual building video. Cheers, my man
I’m Running a refurbished Dell Workstation I’ve had it for 5+ years. The Xeon E5-1650 v2 6 core. Well it slowly died until I figured out the CPU was fried. So I bought one from Russia on eBay. It actually worked. I think it suffered a lightning strike as some of the USB ports are over amping, so I just turned them off. I’ve struggled along with this Frankenstein for 5 years. Now my Video Card or CPU is acting up again. I need to build another computer, so looking forward to starting over. I got that old workstation with 32gigs of ram for $300. Added a 4gb. GPU and I can do a lot with it. I need a high performance cheap build for 2 monitors for CAD and some Amateur Radio software. Looking forward to your video !! ❤ I’ll check out MicroCenter, thanks for that link.
I like how every so often I see a video of yours, and it's a "How to build" series. Technically, you only need one every decade or two, but someone like myself would prefer a recent video over one 3 years old. Especially since a novice wouldn't know PC building has been (relatively) the same from the very beginning. But what would I know, I'm just a novice enthusiast myself.
Thank you Paul, this is now my go-to video to forward to friends and family who often ask me to either build them a computer or help them buy one. I think your explanations are really helpful for those shopping pre-builds also.
Great content, as always. I watched one of your old build guides before building my first PC in 2016 and I just finished my 2nd build a couple months ago. But I still watched this new guide. I would love to see a video explaining a bit about what activities some of the higher end hardware is used for. Things like the fastest M.2s, faster memory, Xeon/threadripper cpus,.etc.
i learned how to build my first computer via your excellent 3 part series years ago (i think you were still with Newegg or maybe they sponsored that video). i learned one major thing from those videos that saved my first computer build. I breadboarded the major components outside the case to test them. As it turned out i had a bad motherboard and while that was frustrating.. it was actually way easier troubleshooting outside the case rather than inside the case. if i have someone that i'm helping them build a computer, i routinely tell them to watch your video series as they are the best i have seen.
I like were this video is going... but I just finished my build so I wont finish watching it. However, thank you for doing this type of video as most people only do a build every few years and specs change faster than most of us build PC's.
