This video will show you exactly how to build a 5" diameter plywood ball. This plywood sphere will start out as an icosahedron or d20 and then be sanded into a smooth sphere. You will see all the angles and techniques I use to build this wood sphere.

I watched that original video when you did it and I wanted to try. I did notice other asking for angles and understand why you were not ready to give them out. But a little over a year ago I did make one with 60 pieces. I came across a video by Matthias Wandel and he gave a lot of information. I am happy with how mine came out for my first one. After that I made one with 12 segment sides to look like a soccer ball and had to work the math out for it. I did give that in my video. Glad to see you do this as I know many people will want to try one. I just now came across this video of yours and plan on watching the whole process. Thanks for posting it. Gary

"Always have your saw plugged in, before you start to use it." Those are the pro tips schleps like myself really rely on to make us look competent. After following your advice, I did notice the saw worked much better. I always wondered how a person put enough force on the blade by spinning it with your hand, to get it to cut effectively. Saved my a boatload of time and effort!

I’m going to be honest, I don’t know that I have ever needed to find the angle down to the “.7” when “.9” wouldn’t work! Haha, great job! Such a cool project, I’ll show this to my students in class!

I guess if the pieces fit then the actual number is irrelevant. 21.7 is just a starting point.

If you make more than one of plan on making more later you could consider making a wooden gauge to set your table saw angle easily in the future. A simple Thin scrap piece of plywood would suffice.

You are right , I have setup gauges made from lexan that I use for my chop saws.

Awesome video series! Could it be possible to get mm measurements for us old continent folk (maybe as a text displayed on the video), please? Inches are way too confusing for my simple mind 😅
@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams
@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams 4 года назад
Plywood blank is 60cm x 18cm. Cut into strips 8cm wide. I think that was the only inch measurements I mentioned. As long as all the pieces are the same it will work out.

ThankYou for sharing. Question: does your 21.7 angle change with thicker material or wider equilaterals? ThankYou
@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams
@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams 3 года назад
The angle will stay the same. If you are going to make the triangles larger, you will also have to make them thicker (if you plan on rounding it off).

how much the ball weights after sanding completely? is it too heavy & thick?
@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams
@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams 4 года назад
I don’t know...I will have to weigh it. The centers of the triangles are still near original thickness. The centers of the “web” areas is about 5/16” (8mm)
@ismatnabila
@ismatnabila 4 года назад
@@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams Ok. And how did you determine the primary bevel angle of the triangles? that it might be or close to 21.7 degrees?
@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams
@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams 4 года назад
Ismat Jahan There are quite a few cad programs that can figure the angles. I saw another video that used 21 degrees so I just started there and refined it until the pieces fit tight. All of the triangles are exactly the same so if the first five fit correctly the rest will fit too.

@@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams Will the board be curved by time? & lose the shape?
@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams
@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams 4 года назад
Ismat Jahan I have some that are over 10 years old and they are still in good condition. Most alphetic resin glue will “creep” over time and you will notice a slight raising of glue joint

Also 'balls' made of wood. A little different than you do it and pure for myself. Not that I wouldn't sell one if someone wants to buy a copy. Two examples: My logo here: i.imgur.com/tQXWAnv.jpeg A football / fullerene: i.imgur.com/frcnPzx.jpeg (now I have placed that last piece) The material is 3 mm laser cut plywood. The diameter is 200 mm (8 inches) Greets from the other side of the pond!
