This is a quick summary of how I built a DIY queen bed frame with storage for my guest bedroom. This DIY project can be built with very few tools and is an easy way to add storage in an otherwise wasted space in the bedroom.

After about 9 months of on again off again building, my daughter is now sleeping in a bed I built from watching this video 1000 times and the plans you put out there. Still need to finish the drawers but she loves it. I maybe shouldn’t have picked this as my very first woodworking project, but I learned a ton. Thank you so much!

Really great project! Does make for a really big object to maneuver through the house. I addressed that by making the whole thing as an assembly of 3 cabinet carcasses. Their joining can easily be hidden with the trim work you do on what you call the "footer." Also, you can put the whole thing on a ~2.5-3" plinth that has a smaller footprint, to allow a toe space around the bed. Cheers! keep making super content like this.

What could possibly possess the minds of 300+ people to dislike this video? Were they jealous that they were too inept to do the project? What flaws did they see that made them vote a thumbs down verdict? I didn't see any negative comments below so I'm kind of bewildered as to why some people didn't like it. I'm no wood worker but this project looked simple enough for even me to do. It's not like April claimed that this was the best way to do the project, she did it the best that she could using the considerable skills that she'd developed over the years. And it looked like it would easily last 25 or more years. I give her and the project a thumbs up -- WAY UP!

It might have something to do with the functionality of the frame. it is a well known fact that mattresses of any kind need air circulation below, otherwise they will mold and promote bacteria growth. An upgrade to this project might be for example another box on top of that one with 2x4s ribs allowing for air to circulate and moisture to escape.

or some blocks as feet under the base to raise it slightly off the floor and cut out holes in the top of the base using a hole saw. Same result without adding too much height. Awesome job all the same, well done young lady.

metaspherz It's because at the end of the video one drawer on the bed was missing a handle, no other explanation it just pushed people's OCD but I let it slide personally haha

I love how proud you look at your finished products.There is no better feeling than being able to make your own functional furniture.And it is a refreshing change to see a female showing us how to do it.I have always advocated that women have the same tools as men to do what is presumably a mans job.A brain and two hands is all that is necessary. And most importantly a love of creating.What impresses me more about you,is that you are so young,but have a old head on your shoulders.A very rare thing these days.I bet your family are very proud of you.

I had a thick piece of foam in my 11 foot camper years ago. It was queen size and several people told me that a foam mattress would make me sweat but once I put a comforter under the bottom sheet it was a very comfy bed..You did a great job on this project April.

instead of draws on the wall side I would think a door or two along the foot side would allow you to store longer stuff (hockey stick, rifles ) but other than that killer set up
@AlexXHitchcock
@AlexXHitchcock 7 лет назад
The framing she did for the drawers went all the way from side to side. If she ran a piece down the middle and terminated the drawer supports at it then it would allow access to the full length of the bed.

Love the idea of using hot glue to hold the drawer fronts in place... I'll be stealing that one. Really nice bed frame unit. My wife, Elise and I have a dresser in our room with much the same layout. I stacked the drawer units from a water bed we were getting rid of and added legs and installed a top. It has served us well for more than 20 years. Fits perfectly under the window. Love your videos. They inspire me...

I like it. When I worked with a cabinet / furniture craftman, we put in desks & cabinets for a in home office. The home owner wanted a spare bed in the office, but hidden from client view. So we made a tall cabinet with double doors on the bottom of a murphy bed. The double door were fake, just glued to a sheet of plywood, after building it, I could not tell it was fake doors, under a bed that stood up right.

i used 2 sets of king size 6 drawer waterbed pedestals i picked up at the curb and screwed 2 on top of each other so i had 6 drawers on each side of my bed, then screwed down plywood and used a cotton futon mattress as i have a very bad back and need firm support! i discovered this way back in the 1980's. i also built a 9 drawer dresser for my school bus camper in 1986 by stacking 3 pieces with 3 drawers each and topping with plywood.

Impressive work! Nicely done! Now I want to go make mine! If I did this I would have to pre cut everything and assemble it in the room I want the bed in. it would be way to heavy to move into the house without help. I would definitely do two sides with drawers since my bedroom is large enough, use Furniture grade plywood. My Kreg pocket hole jig. Lots of wooden plugs to hide the screw holes. Interesting that you didn't use glue. Two sheets of quality plywood to assemble this on so I could have a semi flat surface on a carpeted bedroom floor, then remove them after the project is done.
@ribo451
@ribo451 8 лет назад
Looks great. The only thing I saw that might be of note is that I put more emphasis on making the drawer slides parallel with the top. Using a level is fine if the surface you are building on is flat. If it's not, making your drawer slides level may mean they are out of level when the bed is installed. Which could lead to drawers that open or close themselves. Assuming your floor is level where the bed is going.
@gregaltenhofel7326
@gregaltenhofel7326 9 лет назад
Nice job April and I think most of us know you do all the work unless you need someone to hold the stupid end of something. I did a similar commissioned piece 3 drawers on each side and one long full length (6' or so) drawer in the end. For looks I made it look like 3 drawers on the end with 2 of them fake. There were no drawer glides that long so I used ball bearing rollers from H Freight so the long drawer in the end will slide all the way out.

I've recently thought about building my son a queen size bed with storage for his clothes and toys. Like your bed its against the wall. My only suggestion would be on the opposite side from the drawers would be a tunnel for more storage, that's a lot of "wasted" space. My suggestion aside, the bed looks fantastic, you are making Ikea nervous I'm sure. Lol😀😉
