How to Build a Radial Flow Solids Filter for Aquaponic Systems

After a false start the other week I finally have a new Radial Flow Filter with 50mm/2" piping installed into the aquaponics system.. The larger pipe has helped with the flow rates & I have no more air lock problems with the fish tank SLO (solids lifting outlet)..
The whole purpose of the filter is to slow the velocity of the water so the solids can precipitate out and be removed from the system.. For this to happen the water must slow its flow long enough inside the filter for the solids to settle out, this is called the retention time.. I have read in a few places that anything over 45 second retention time is acceptable for larger solids, with 2 min being the desirable amount of time for filters like ours..
The formula I use to see how long the water is retained in the filter before moving on is:
Size of filter (in litres) / flow rate (in litres per hour) = Retention time in hours.
(Same can be done in gallons & gallons per hour)
For our system, the equation looks like this..
50 / 2700 = 0.0185
Multiply 0.0185 x 60 to turn that into minutes & we get 1.11 minutes.
To work out the seconds we then multiply the 0.11 by 60 & get 6.6 so we round that up & get 7 seconds.
So the total retention time for the filter on our system is 1 minute & 7 seconds. 👍
Hope that info helps some out there interested in setting up a solids capturing RFF..

Built my filter. It is working very well. Thanks for all the great videos. Have 27 tilapia in a 75 gallon aquarium. Used a 5 gallon bucket and a three gallon bucket. Started setting up an 800 gallon system today. Am very excited! Will be using a 55 gallon drum on the new system for this filter. By the way, I had to restrict the water flow from my pump because I didn't use big enough PVC pipe. Will be using 2" on my new system.

Your videos have really helped me to understand aquaponic systems and how they work. My traditional USA farming background is a bit limiting and I'm kind of closed minded.... I started watching your videos as a way to confirm that all things ending in ponic were bull. Well you were able to explain in a way I could understand a relate to so I am opening my mind and finding myself excited to learn this new/old way of creating food. Thank you. I am going to set up a small system on my farm and give it a swirl.

Rob, first, let me say, I love your content. Thanks for sharing. The reason you are not getting the waste to the center drain is most likely because you are not getting enough radial motion to draw it there. The input pipe needs to have an angle to it to spin the water. the best is perpendicular to the long axis of the bucket, (tangential to the circumference of the bucket), and pointing slightly downward. in your design water is essentially bubbling over the top of the input pipe equally on all sides defeating the idea of a radial flow. you will probably have better luck if you remove the smaller bucket, shorten that stand pipe to add a 90 degree elbow, then place an extension pipe to the edge of the 5 gallon bucket and add a 45 degree elbow that ejects the water to move around the edge of the bucket. that will create the rotational movement that will circulate the water to the center of the bottom. The other issue you have with the current high input, low output is your output is in the flow path of your solids so you are going to get more solids in your output. your input needs to be lower than your output so the natural draw of the radial motion keeps your solids away from the output. the input should be about half way to 3/4 down the bucket and the output at the top. I figured that out in designing mine. I can send you a pic of the design or the implementation if you my desrciption wasn't clear. Cheers.

Hi David. The filter you're describing sounds more like a swirl filter. 👍 This jobbie did a great job at letting the solids precipitate out even though the flow rate was a bit faster than I would of liked. Unless the base is conical there will always be issues trying to get the last of the solids out. I don't find it being a huge issue as it only takes a quick squirt with the hose, even in the large 200L/50gal one I'm running at then moment. Have been asked by a few folks to see how we clean out the large one we use now so might do a clip & include a bit of a Q&A as well. Cheers mate.

Thanks for the follow up. I didn't realize there was a technical difference between the radial flow and the swirl filters. I thought it was just a difference in the nomenclature. Something else to read up on. Cheers.

No sh!t man, learning everyday, lol, I'm noticing some people with the input to the filter in the top middle (some in the bottom middle), while others with the output in the top middle, the radial flow, pushing solids to the side of the barrel, then down to the bottom. I've also noticed some people using shrouds over the input, to force the water to change directions a couple times on its way to the output, and others that don't use such shrouds. Thanks for your comment helping me realize what I've been seeing.

I use larger bins about the same height as the cut-down IBC. I put the entire drup and riser inside the bin, allowing the intake hole and seal to line up neatly with the outflow hole and seal in the IBC. So - straight across from the IBC into the bin, then drop and rise inside the bin. As far as the water flow inside the baffle is concerned it's identical , since one wall of the baffle sits in the gap between the drop and rise. Therefore inside the baffle you just have one pipe, as per normal. It tidies up the plumbing a treat and allows the use of a U shaped pipe at the bottom rather than multiple 90 or 45 degree elbows and joining pipes. Fewer parts, fewer connections, less exposed pipe.

Very Cool. To purge the accumulated debris, try a very small pipe and uniseal in the side as close to the bottom of the bucket as you can get, stuck in only far enough to seal, so the waste drain draws from the edge of the bucket instead of the center.

Rob firstly great design, simple and easy to build. I would suggest a couple of things. Putting a cone inside the base. Start with a cardboard template to get the right shape, recycle another bucket to get the plastic. As it is not structural Aquarium sealant would be all you need to glue it and hold it in place. That will save all the siphoning you are doing. Secondly I would recommend you add some sort of fine filter between you BIO media and the radial flow. If the BIO material fills up with too much muck its not very efficient. You could just add a layer of Pond foam to the top of you bio media and have the water pouring into bucket from the top, that would allow you to remove the foam for cleaning easily. There are a few commercial pond filters that work that way you could copy. The Last thing I'd add is some cinder rock, the plastic BIO media is ok at housing the aerobic bacteria, but not the anaerobic bacteria. Porous rock has an area in the middle that support anaerobic life better than the all plastic stuff. PondGuru sells a great brand here in the UK, but you should be able to locate an Oz equivalent without the need to import media from here. A bag of the stuff in the bottom or your BIO filter would improve bacterial growth. I'd be interested to hear how you dealt with too much Nitrate in your system. my test system has that issue, and plants are now starting to go yellow and pale.

Morning Sir :) With the pipe work in this unit there isn't really enough room to get a cone into the base of this one but it is something I'm looking at doing in a larger filter in the future.. The way the bio filter is set up there will be no anarobic bacteria in there hopefully.. There is a load of air running through the media keeping it on the move at the moment.. I do have a concern when it comes to solids building up in the bio & have a small sponge filter in mind to go between the 2 filters if it ends up being a problem.. Still waiting on a commercial venturi to arrive that I want to try out on the MBBF & once its been hooked up & tested I will post a clip on the unit to give you a better look at it.. Cheers mate & have a great weekend..

Rob Bob Rob Re the Cone: putting a cone in the base of that Radial flow you have should be easy, you only need 10 degrees of fall so the elevation may not even need to go as high as your pipe work. If it does, just cut a hole through it and have the pipe work pass through the cone as well as the bucket wall. a couple of methods you could use are, 1 to use a medium like sand and cement, use a dryish mix and just form the shape with a stick the length of your cone wall (between the drain and a line on the buck wall at the right height), or 2 use a plastic cone and just glue it in (an animal medial collar for example). Re the moving bed: be-careful how much air you use, you are only meant to create enough motion to knock soil particles or dead bacteria off. too much air and the bacteria can not establish themselves. Also the air only helps one of the bacteria you are trying to encourage, the second type does not like loads of air, hence the cinder rock suggestion. as those guys will form inside the center of the rock where the air can not penetrate. Just a lay of pourious rock in the base of your filter should great improve things. Also a foam layer on the top to stop fine dirt getting to your media should also import your filter as well. Here is a link to a commercial pond filter that uses the combined foam and moving bio media idea www.lotuswatergardenproducts.com/Instructions/Bio%20Master%20Instruction.pdf

When constructing the filter, ever consider making the bottom slope to the center? You could sandwich the very center between two large washers to keep it flat for the drain seal, and then use a heat gun and pressure to create a slight funnel shape. That may help the solids migrate to the drain. You would need to trim/modify the platform it sits on, but that would be a cinch.

You don't want the solids in your grow bed, but I know what they mean. There is some undigested food and other material that can be broken down in the solid waste. Good on you for using it as fert for growing. I don't think it matters that it is removed from the system as long as it is being put to good use.

looks good dude, i saw on another video a bloke attached a length of flexible hose in the inside of the outlet to waste. the hose was just long enough to reach the surfaces in the filter.When he opened the tap, it acts as a vacuum to just run the hose around and suck the particles out, he had it attached to a stick so he could manipulate it without even getting his hands wet.

Have seen the same clip & think siphons do make life easier. I was using a siphon for a while on the smaller system & used it to do quick cleans. With the larger one the crud ends up all over the walls due to the number of fish so it needs a good hose out. :-D Cheers mate.

Hi Rob... Thanks for your videos.... I started aquaponics about a year ago and so far so good... I grow yabbies and callop.....Im always making modifications and fine tuning the system.... I also use hydroponics using similar methods.... Your videos has set the standard!!! Thank you for the way you present yourself and the knowledge you share... There are always other ways to do things which are against the norm.... Aquaponics and hydroponics are great way to achieve a sustainable back yard. These methods can be cost effective, utilise minimal space and use minimal water. I would love to think kids today are exposed to this in schools. Would you mind if I send you a video of my setup and if you could provide some feedback?... Thanks again.....

Morning :) Some folks have had no issues with solids in their beds after 5+ years of growing & have read that some never clean them out so it can be done apparently.. Just don't want to have the issues we had previously with nitrite spikes caused by solids build up going anaerobic again & figure this is the easiest way.. Also means less bed cleaning which I think most folks would be up for ;) Cheers & have fun with the build... Will you be posting clips ? Cheers, Rob.

Morning.. That's great to read... How do you clean the solids from the RFF & do you have problems with fine solids collecting in the bio at all ? CCBear said he had a few issues with solids coming through his RFF to the Bio so has set up a small filter in between.. Cheers & thanks :)

I pump all but about 5 gal. of water into another 55 Gal. drum then use a shop vac to suck out the waste. (dump that on to the garden patch), then pump the water back into the rff. sounds like way more work than what it really is. I use womens knee highs with a ball of polyester batting in them on the inlet of the bio filter. Seems to work ok easy enough two rinse out once a day...have a good one

Rob Bob Yes, that's the one! I'm glad you saw the clip. Another challenge is that my wife and I are vegetarians, so we wouldn't be harvesting fish for food. In my 55 gallon starter system, I'm using goldfish and they seem to be very hardy. I'm dealing with a high Ammonia spike right now and they don't seem any worse for the wear. If not eating fish, ornamental fish are a great choice. They are super cheap and can be resold when they grow larger.

Not sure if you are going to notice this post, I am from Sweden so to speak. But I saw numerous of your videos regarding the Aquaponics, it is quite neat to see. How ever, your biofilter/filter. I suggest hooking it up so it is on the return pipe instead, basically it takes care of any Ammonia and the like that passes through the beds. As for solving your solids part, have you tried to create some suction device? Basically a crossroad on the outlet that sucks from four directions and perhaps 90 degree turns to suck in a circle. Perhaps that will help otherwise try get a swirl along the outer perimeter to make it all collect in the middle.
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 10 лет назад
Hi there again :) I don't think it matters in a small system like this where the bio is situated & it is easier for me to place it after the RF in the configuration we have.. Don't think I could get the water to a high enough velocity in the beds to have any real swirling effect on the water.. I am interested in trying out an over sized aquarium siphon vacuum to see how that will work at dislodging some of the build up when it comes time to move the beds around.. Cheers & have a great one, Rob..

For the solids where u have to use a syphon have you thought about heating the bottom evenly with a heat gun or torch and gently pulling downward on the drain to make it a funnel shape? Then all should settle down at the base of the funnel and the force of water pressure should allow the solids to be forced out.

Put a plate with holes in it 5cm from the bottom of the radial filter. It will help keep the solids in still water and will increase water velocity when while draining.

Rob, I absolutely love your videos, and have I think watched all of your aquaponics clips. I am a little curious as to why use a radial flow filter rather than a couple of screens at the outlets on the bed to collect the solids? I am currently not running a system, but will be starting one soon, and appreciate the insight as I have now seen both setups. Thanks very much for all the vids. Great work!

Hey Chris.. I was using the scouring pads as filters to start off with before the RFF went in.. Due to the amount of fish solids that come through the system I think it's a lot easier to remove them in one filter.. The sponges/scourers require daily maintenance where the radial flow filters can be cleaned out once a week.. Hope that helps & glad you like the clips.. Cheers..

Great info. This is one of the best filter build vidoes I've seen yet .I'm researching for my first set up this spring here in Ontario Canada (it warmed to a balmy -9c today!) my set up will be in a heated garage turned into a greenhouse so leaks will be no bueno. Do the uniseals hold up well , I'm leaning towards bulkheads instead. Thanks for sharing all your work, cheers mate. Jeff Mitts (by the way , I bought a jiggle siphon years ago at an auto show from an Australian, go figure)
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 9 лет назад
Hey Jeff.. Haven't had any issues with the uniseals at all.. Have started to us them to plumb up the grow beds now to see how they go as compared to the bulkheads.. Stopped using the jiggle siphon here, just too much solids & it kept clogging up.. Not that I need it in the new aquaponic set up but have to clean a few solids from the base of the fish farm tanks every now & then.. Found that a straight ½"/13mm siphon hose worked much better.. Cheers Jeff & have fun with the system mate..

Add a second drain a few inches from bottom to drain out clean water. Then swirl and drain. You can also just drain first little bit of solids, then catch clean water to return to system and then swirl last little bit and remove.
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 10 лет назад
That's just too easy.. Do you have yours set up like that ? Will use much less water than the siphon again & I'm lucky that our system is set up so I can drain it directly back into the sump tank.. If pushed for time the jiggle siphon would still be the go for the quick clean I think.. Thanks for that & shall look at adding that to the build this weekend.. Cheers James.. Rob..

+kris eichenhofer Hey Kris. Have seen folks talk about adding them but isn't something I'd do as they wouldn't remove all the waste. The filter would still need cleaning & that cause a few issues I think. I think it would be better to have them in a separate set up that gets fed the waste from the filter when it gets cleaned. That's just my take on it & to tell you the truth I don't know a great deal about raising crayfish. Cheers mate.

Great vedios again ! However this time I think I'm missing something in your video. I understand the input from fish tank is low on one side. 40mm from bottom. Also drain to waste is from the middle of the bottom of the outer tank. What is the plumbing between the outer and inner square tank? I'm sure it is more than obvious to most viewers but I cannot quite get it. Hope you have time to respond. Tks.
@RobsAquaponics

Alan Lloyd Hi Alan. There is no plumbing between the square bucket & the drum itself. The bucket is just used to re direct the water allowing it to slow when it hist the base & let the solids drop out onto the base of the barrel. Hope that helps some mate, Cheers.

I saw somewhere long ago how to make a conical 5 gallon bucket: you drill a hole in the bottom, then suspend a weight from that hole and apply gradual heat to the bottom. In theory this melts the plastic a bit and forms a slight cone. Never tried it myself but seems like it would do the trick
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 10 лет назад
Hi there Dan & thanks.. Another one I was to about to try was to fill the bucket with boiling water then heat the base from the centre out (I think) & that would do the same thing.. Am looking at getting a plastic welder so would like to play around with making up a few filters from scratch to see how they go.. Just need to grow a money tree first :D Cheers sir & all the best, Rob.

Rob Bob I remember a few years ago my brother and I were playing in the woods and we tried doing something we saw on tv where someone boiled water by putting hot rocks from a campfire into a cooking pot, but without thinking I used a plastic bucket and because of how hot the rocks got in the fire the bucket almost melted. So I think hot water would do the trick with all the heat and the downward pressure.

Hi! I’ve been binging your videos the last few days, I appreciate the wealth of information, thank you. I have seen some setups that include a few fish in their sump tank as well as their fish tank, what are your thoughts on this? Is it worth the few extra fish and carrying the solid waste from the sump to the regular fish tank? Seems like it somewhat sets back the purpose of the solids filter. Any insight is appreciated, thanks! Keep Growing.
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 4 года назад
I have done it myself & don't think it's too much of an issue if it's just 1 or 2 small fish. In our case I have a small catfish in the sump as he would quite easily get sucked up the solids lifting pipe in the fish tank. Once it gets a bit larger it will be gong in the main tank though. I don't think I'd have loads if there was no filtration between the pump & fish tank. Sorry it took a while to get back to you.

@RobsAquaponics

Cheers vol vox. The lids sit on fairly loosely so there is no real risk of one forming. A siphon can't really form as the solids outlet from the fish tank has an open port at the top to prevent it from occurring. Have a top one. 👍

Good stuff as always, finally building my system. Question, at what height is the in flow stand pipe in the radial filter, 1 to 2 inches lower that the fish tank outflow ? I assume if it was higher than the FT outflow the water would not flow into it,or does the drop with the 45 deg bends force the water up and out the pipe ?
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 10 лет назад
Hi there Steve.. It's sitting about 3-5" below the outlet from the fish tank from memory.. The twin 45's just help the water flow with minimal loss to it's velocity.. You can but sweeping bends in some places but have had no luck sourcing them here.. Hope that helps mate, Rob..

Hi Sean. Sorry I missed this when you posted it. Both filters are the same in that the water enters through the base of the drum with the delivery standpipe allowing the water to exit inside the cowling that redirects the water downwards. The earlier one with the pot screwed on the lid of the drum was annoying I thought. With this one I could spot check by just taking the lid off the bucket. Hope that helps some & sorry again for taking a while to get back to you.

I built a radial flow filter recently and the solids dont seem to be settling on the bottom. Any reason you could think of that is causing that? The water is being pumped from my pond into the RFF before it gets to the GB.
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 9 лет назад
Hi there.. Could be due to a few reasons.. From what I've read/been told tilapia (not sure if that's what your running though) waste can float a bit before it settles down.. Another cause can be if the water flow is too great into the filter it may not slow down for long enough to let the solids drop out.. In that case you either need to slow the flow or get a larger filter to aid in the retention time.. Another reason I've been told of but not seen myself is that some food has high fibre content & can cause the waste to float, am not sure how accurate that is though.. Hope that gives you some clues as to what could be going on.. Cheers..

@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 6 лет назад
Hi Asri & thanks. Do you mean double the volume? A larger volume filter container will definitely allow more solids to collect. I think no matter what size the container is you're using it';s best practice to empty the solids frequently so as they don't start to break down causing issues with the water quality. Hope that helps sope.

Hi Rob, im planning to start a fishtank in my small garden, and i've been searching for ideas and i have a question for you: I'm thinkng of using a pond pump to take de water out of the ibc tank, and simply drop it at a beggining of a tray filled with biofilters, plant the lettuces and other stuff directly in the bio filters, have the water go throu 4 plastic trays and let it fall in the ibc fish tank again. is it too simple and prone to fail due to solids acumutation in the first tray? i have limited space for this setup.
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 8 лет назад
+José Miguel Camarinhas Hi José. That sounds like a lot of basic systems I've seen folks build. When you say biofilters do you mean a basic media bed filled with rock or clay media? Loads of folks have systems set up without solids filters & many run for years without any problems. Running the water from bed to bed will mean that the the first will accumulate the bulk of the solids acting as a filter of sorts. You might just need to clean it out a bit sooner depending on how many fish you stock & your feeding rates. Cheers mate.

@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 9 лет назад
+Giorgio Cerruti Hey Giorgio. The rule of thumb by many on stocking densities comes down to how much bio filtration you have in the system. I like many suggest 20L of wet (under water level) of 20mm rock or clay media for every fish you want to raise to 500g. This will give you more than enough biological surface area for the bacteria to colonise & oxidise the ammonia/nitrite for you. Hope that helps you out some mate & have fun with the build.
@MatthewCuba

Interesting stuff and well explained. Thank you for the good information. I guess this is similar to the "swirl filter" approach but it uses the inner bucket walls as a barrier and that makes the solids in the water have to move downward after they exit the center pipe and then the water moves upwards toward that exit hole but the weight of the solid material tends to keep it down at the bottom. Have you had experience with the swirl ones? If so, do you find these radial flow filters to work better? Or does this type of filter tend to work better for the size bucket? I'm building a duck pond filtering system for our 3 domesticated ducks. Using the 55 gallon plastic barrels. Wondering if this type of filter would work better.
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 7 лет назад
Hi Matthew. From what I've seen the Radial flow filters/settlers are more efficient at getting solids to fall out of suspension. There is a paper floating around on it but I can't find link at the moment sorry. I'm not sure about duck water as they do tend to kick up a lot of fine solids into the water. If you haven't already search for duckponicks & quackponics online & you should get a bit of info come up. Most duck based systems I've seen just use grow beds to filter the solids. Hope that helps a bit mate. Cheers.

hi mate in a small flip setup does the pump need to run 24 hrs?

I have all out pumps running 24/7 Vance. Some will use timers but I prefer not to as I see them as another fail point in the system. HTH some 👍👍

Hi Rob, Do you really need a bio filter if you have a flow filter? And if you do, what is the best set up for them? Thank you for your videos they have been very helpful to me, cheers

Hi Issam. In most reasonably stocked aquaponic systems the grow beds are the bio filters so a stand alone one isn't needed. I'm over stocked by about 30 fish so like to have the extra bio filtration there to handle the load. Hope that helps some mate & sorry for how long it took to reply. Rob.

Phillip McCallum You should be able to get them from plumbing supply & bunnings stores.. I got ours from www.irrigationstore.com.au/Barrell-Union-Slip-Port-PVC I bought a whole load of fittings from them as they were so cheap & have a $20 flat shipping fee.. I also like to use the rubber sleeves & hose clamps.. Can be a cheaper way to do it for smaller diameter pipes.. Cheers mate..

Hi Rob! Great video as always! I'm having an issue I hope you can maybe help with. I've been running my 55 gallon starter barrel system for about 3 months now. Everything seems to be going well so far, but over the last couple weeks, I've been dealing with rather high Ammonia levels, somewhere between 2-4 ppm. Nitrites still at zero. My goldies seem to be fine and healthy, but I know if it keeps going up I'll have big problems. I have cut back the feed by half over the last week with no change. I do not have a solids filter on this system so would it be safe to assume that the increase ammonia might be from solids in the grow beds? I haven't dug into the grow bed yet, but will probably will soon to take a peak. Is there anything else you might suggest checking? Any advice would be welcome. Have a great day!

@RobsAquaponics 10 лет назад
Hi there.. I don't think solids would be the issue in such a young system.. Sometimes it can take quite a few months for a system to cycle completely.. Have you checked the pH lately ? If it falls too far it can sometimes cause the bacteria to crash so I've been warned..
@subedei1
@subedei1 10 лет назад
Thanks so much for the reply Rob. I have actually do have low pH, 6 or lower. The Master Test Kit doesn't read lower than 6, but it's a very, very light yellow and I've thought it may be much lower. My top-off water tends to be in the 7-8 pH range and doesn't change the overall pH at all and I usually need to add about 5 gallons a week from evaporation loss (air is very dry in heated garage). So I would imagine my pH is staying pretty low. Any suggestions as to how to keep it from crashing?
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 10 лет назад
subedei1 Most folks add calcium hydroxide to help raise the pH.. Wouldn't want it to go over 7, between 6.2 & 6.8 is the sweet spot I try to aim for with ours.. You could probably start off with a very small amount, say a under quarter of a tsp & see what that does after 12 hours.. Nate from Bright Agrotech has done a great clip explaining buffering that I think is a great watch.. Bringing up pH in Aquaponics systems Hope that helps you out some.. Rob.

Hi rob i was thinking what if you could make the bottom curved that way the heavy debris has no choice but to go down the drain? Also where do you get those buckets from as i can not find any with a screw on lid.... PS i live in Sydney.

Hey there... Have thought of dishing the base to help with the solids collection but have left it flat for the present builds.. Still only takes a min or 2 to clean it out so is no big issue.. I got the drums from a produce/feed store.. Most will sell something similar for storing animal feeds in.. Hope that helps, Rob..

Rob you did hear me say i am From Sydney, where lazy here....lol i got two idea's one would be to heat up the bottom and just let gravity and some water to set it, the other would be to cut the bottom off and use a dish that's pvc "dollar store" then shrinking it tight to the bucket then pvc Cement it... I love the smell of that stuff it gives idea's lol.

Hey Rob, I am a newbe in the Aquaponics world, so I have what could be a dumb question. How can I have a radial filter when my GB is above my fish tank.(Backyard Aquaponics IBC Setup) P.s you are the aquaponic master IMO.
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 10 лет назад
Hi there :) All you would need to do is have the RFF set up so that the outflow from it would run into the grow bed via gravity.. Should be easy enough to do with a small 50-60L drum.. Let us know if you want more info.. No master here, just learning as I go ;) Cheers & have fun with the build, Rob.

Thanks for the quick reply Rob, I would like to run a RFF from the fish tank to the GB if possible but I cant work it out unless I use a pump. My GB is sitting on top of my fish tank. If you have an idea I am all ears. My other option is t run it back into the fish tank. I would prefer gravity fed. Thanks once again.
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 10 лет назад
jjs4x4 What size pump are you using at the moment ? If it can manage the head hight of say 200-400mm you would run that into the RFF instead of the grow bed.. The solids would be removed & the water would flow out to fill the grow bed.. Hope that makes sense..
@jjs4x4
@jjs4x4 10 лет назад
It is a 5000LPH so it will have no problems with the 400mm height. I will give it a go and let you know how I go. Thanks.

Hey Rob, love your videos! Is it possible to have a radial flow settler that is “too big”? With a retention time of about 10 or 15 minutes would that be a bad thing?

Hi Rob, I really enjoy your videos. I'm just starting to design an IBC system. After some research, I'm keen to install a radial flow filter and Google got me here. I have done some sums and I was planning on a 40mm SLO. I would like to ask the reason you upgraded to 50mm? Were you concerned about potential pressure loss on adding the bio filter? The 40 seemed to be working well. I am planning a larger inlet diameter to avoid any blockage issues. Have you noticed a big jump in water quality attributed to the bio filter? Would you recommend one? My research is definitely in favour of a solids filter but more neutral on a bio filter in small systems (preliminary finding). What is your take? I expect a spectrum of opinions out there on this one. Cheers, John

@RobsAquaponics 10 лет назад
Hey John.. At the moment we have 2700LPH running through the system & still have 40mm pipe hooked up after the filters.. I up sized to the 50mm as it will give me more flexability in the flow rates in the system when it expands as a larger pump may be added.. I haven't noticed any change to the water quality or growth rates in the system as such since the bio filter was added.. It was installed as I'm looking at taking some beds off line for a while & the Bio will help pick up the slack in the processing of the ammonia/nitrite while they are off line.. I want it to be in place for a while so the colony of bacteria can build up before I remove the beds though.. It will stay in line after the move as I hope to have at least one floating raft bed & some other growing systems.. As there won't be as much media in the system the bio will pick up the slack in the NH3 & NO2- conversion.. Definitely isn't needed in all systems but can be helpful in some situations.. Hope that helps some mate.. Have fun planing & building the system :) Rob..

Rob Bob Thanks Rob, Logical explanation and I glad I asked. It's fun. My brother initially built a single IBC system and now he is expanding after a satisfying triumph. He got me in and I am starting off with a 3 GB, 1000L FT and sump. Yet to decide but probably CHOP rather than CHOP 2 due to lower costs and simple plumbing for a redundant pump. My plan for the 40mm SLO is to detect primary pump running via increased head height in the FT. 50mm SLO would probably allow me to do that too but I was skeptical of the pipe formulas for really low velocity and pressure. Your videos have helped me a lot. If only I came a cross them earlier. I must say it is reassuring that my independent design will end up close to your current setup. I like your radial flow filter design but I do intend to add a cone in the bottom to assist solids removal. It might be trial an error to work out the least angle that work effectively. I don't want the limited volume to be significantly reduced. I will ask one more question. Was there much build up in the old 40mm SLO when you removed it? I expect the faster flow rates through it helped to keep it some what clean. Keep up your great educational videos. My regards, John

Hey John Pointon .. I've found the 40mm SLO got grubbier than the 50mm so far... That might be due to not enough bio film building up for the waste to cling to in the 50mm yet so that may change over time.. As it stands at the moment I have noticed some solids accumulating in the corner of the FT after the changeover.. I was planing on increasing the pump size & flow rate in this system but blew a bit to much on the fish farm so haven't yet.. Would like to see the FT turn over 3+ times an hour which will help in moving the solids around a bit better than they are now.. Cheers John & would be great to see how yours ends up if you ever decide to post a clip or blog.. Rob.

so this goes in between the fish tank and the beds? so water flows into this first b4 going to the beds and back to the fish tank?
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 5 лет назад
Fish tank ► Solids settler/filter ► Grow beds ► Sump tank or back to Fish Tank depending on how your system is laid out. It can be plumbed up differently as well but that's the layout in it's most simplest form.
