Gardening season is in full swing and I'm trying out some raised garden beds on the farm thus year to improve our water drainage issues. We've been getting a lot of rain and or clay soil is getting really compacted and takes forever to drain. So raised garden beds it is! I've made four already and it's such a quick and easy project that I decided to make a video tutorial and share it with you in hopes of giving you some inspiration to try your hand at growing some food this year!
There are a lot of videos and blog posts on inexpensive ways to build your own garden beds but many of them were not very inexpensive solutions in my eyes. I was able to make mine for very little money so I'm sharing what I did in this video with you.
Before using any power tools please practice safety precautions to ensure proper and safe use of all tools and supplies. Read and follow manufacturer's instructions for the tools and supplies you are using. Use eye and hand protection if the project requires it and of course, have fun!
Supplies you'll need:
• Two 2x8x8 foot boards of untreated wood- I used pine but if you can get a good deal on some cedar or redwood then that would be better since they are both naturally rot resistant and should last longer.
• 4 wooden chunks of a 2x4 cut to the width of the board you are using. In my case it was 7 3/8".
• about 20 outdoor/exterior wood screws at 2.5" or longer.
• Cordless drill with predrilling/countersinking bits
This 4 foot x 4 foot raised bed cost me just under $15 and is a great way to start growing food, herbs or even just flowers. This is the size suggested in the Square Foot Gardening method.

I'm a Master Gardener, and one would think I'd have a clue on the best way to construct a raised bed. No so. I've viewed dozens of videos on the best way to build a raised bed and yours, BY FAR, is the best. Your presentation was smooth, easily understandable, and efficient. Thanks SO much for your great video, Vanessa. AWESOME!!

Hello Vanessa. I have constructed many raised beds of various shapes and sizes but I still like to see what methods and materials others are using. Having watched your video I would like to congratulate you on its clarity and comprehensive instructions, it’s a simple design that an absolute beginner could follow and you have even taken the time to explain the correct way to a use drill/driver. For some inexplicable reason some have seen fit to give it the thumbs down. (Well you can’t please everyone). Best regards. Pete.

I did something very similar in my front yard! Although, on the corners I used the prefab 2x2 stakes so the boxes could be pounded into the ground. Then rather than buying soil, I used a variant of Hügelculture and lasagna hardening technique to fill the boxes. All materials in the boxes is free. There is a base sheet of non-glossy cardboard as a weed block, followed with wood chips free from the county, then layers of greens (nitrogen) and browns (carbon). I add woods chips and layers each year. Grass clippings and leaves from fall. The lower layers are composting and provide nutrients, while the newer upper layers act as mulch that prevents weeds. Lightweight, free and organic!

6:00 always drill into the block vs the long piece of wood. you'll have more strength in the connection vs drilling into the end grain of the long board. good video!

It was easier this time as it was the second ever project I have completed using a drill and a saw. I cut the 2x4's myself with a hand saw as I don't have a power saw. Great project, great directions. I am going to be 69 this year and if I can do this, you can too! Yay Crafty Gemini, Yay me!!! Thank you so much!!!

Thanks for posting this video! It looked so easy I went out and built my own bed. I've never used a drill before or built anything out of wood. But, I followed this video and read the comments below. I went to Home Depot and bought their scrap wood meaning the boards are not straight. I got (2) 2x8x20 and (1) 2x4x12 for $9.50. I had Home Depot cut the wood. They won't cut really small support pieces so I had a friend cut those down for me. I made a 5x5 bed. Its imperfect b/c the wood isn't straight but its completely functional. I also have enough pieces to build another 5x5 bed. A box of deck screws cost me $7.50 at True Value. So, in the end I will have (2) 5x5 beds for $17!

+klharndt Deer are horrible where I'm at, the only thing that's ever worked for me is a kinda mean trick. Set up an electric wire fence around your garden, then on each side of the fence, wrap strips of aluminum foil around sections of the wire. Lastly, spread peanut butter on the aluminum foil then turn the fence on. The trick is that when the deer arrives at your garden, the peanut butter will be irresistible to them and go for that instead of the garden plants, and when they do... well... they haven't messed with my spinach or collard greens anymore.

Good video. Affable personality, no dead air time, nice sound track. Rotting wood on garden structures is always a problem. What I do is screw on pieces of 'sacrificial' wood ( like strips of 2" x 2" ) on the bottoms of my wooden structures - like 'feet'. When the wooden feet rot, I just replace them. This way, I don't have to rebuild the entire structure. I don't know if this would work on your raised bed frames - it depends how they rot.

@jeffryflores9373
@jeffryflores9373 7 лет назад
Great video, you don't want to screw/nail into the endgrain of another piece of wood. That is the weakest point in lumber. Always screw into the face or edge of a board. Screwing into the endgrain like said, doesn't stabilize the frame. It may look like it does when you first do it but, really you're weakening the lumber. Wood is made of fibers that run the length of the board, think of it as a bunch of straws tightly grouped together. If you push your finger in from the sides or top you might bend some straws and have to force your finger in. When you stick your finger at the ends, the straws simply just move around your finger. Same thing for screws and wood fibers, screwing into the endgrain just causes the wood fibers to move around the screw, the screw isn't really grabbing onto anything. Also ALWAYS pre drill to ensure no splits or cracking will occur no matter the location. "IF IT'S WORTH DOING, IT'S WORTH DOING RIGHT" - HD Lumber Associate. P.s I'm not bashing on the lady who made the video, hats off to you for going through the process of recording and editing and making the video. I also do video type things I know the struggle, it's not easy. Great video for simple build, I'm just trying to clear things up.

there are some more ways to make untreated wood last: If you make the cornerstuds a bit longer so the underside of the sideboards is not in contact with the ground. Staple some plastic on the top of the sides and let that hang all the way down at the inside where you put your liner. That way the inside is not in contact with any soil. melt a few pieces of bitumen on the bottom of the corner studs Put a piece of wood on top of the cornerstuds to prevent rain from soaking in

I am almost finished building this raised bed. It is my VERY FIRST project using a drill. This is an exellent project for a beginner. I made some mistakes and just learning how to use a power tool, well, I have much to learn, but even though I made some mistakes, what a great project to learn by doing!!!! I love it and can't wait to make another one. The second one will be much better. Lol. The presentation was wonderful, simple, easy to understand. Thank you so much.

Does the sheet metal create any draining issues? \

dope! No Issues what so ever! Been in my tin roof raise beds, for 8 yrs now! I did have to paint it white cause its setting out in full sun the roofing tin does get hot. well the temp didn't help either> 108 degs> but they made it : ) with me watering around out from the raise bed , and cooling off the tin> So its best to be in part shade, at the hottest time of day 1 pm to 4 pm

Just found your site. Good job! We use Redwood out here in California and it lasts longer than Pine or Fir. We also have a LOT of gophers out here so we put chicken wire under the raised beds and that keeps those nasty critters out. Check out my site if you have the time. You may not see this since you posted 3 years ago but does putting chicken wire under the beds interfere with your root vegetables?
@chadburke1938
@chadburke1938 5 лет назад
You have to use 1/2” hardware cloth as chicken wire is too wide of a mesh and gophers can go right through it.

I saved your video a few months ago because I knew I wanted to build one for the upcoming growing season. Well this afternoon I watched your video again and built my own! I actually made mine almost 2’ tall and used 4x4 posts for the corners instead - your design is very adaptable. Thank you so much!! I can’t wait to get it filled and start growing!!

Get some ground cover and staple it to the bottom of the garden to prevent weeds from coming up. It's under $10 a roll and it will stop weeds and grass from taking over your garden and lets water drain out.

Easy design choices, good. After about a decade, my boxes started to dry rot at the ends, and I put metal brackets (L-shape) on the corners, easy retro. I painted the exterior (and ground side surfaces) with house paint, used veg oil on the soil side. It works. In Phoenix, watering is a must, and I finally hit on a nice combo: put underground soakers at a level about 1/3 the height of the boards. These feed the roots directly. For initial watering, install sprayers in each corner (hook into the UG pipe). For the first "x" weeks, until the plants stabilize, use both UG and the sprayers. About the time the plants get tall enough to intercept the sprays, shut them off, and the plants should be developed enough to get their roots into the lower wet zone. Works like a charm. BTW, the wood is cheap. If you have to buy soil (we don't have much natural growing soil in our development: desert) it will certainly be the Big Cost. But like the wood, it's a one-time investment that pays off every year.

Great do-it-yourself guide to building affordable, practical raised beds for gardening in areas with drainage issues. I live near wetlands and have raised bed gardens for asparagus, beans, carrots, cucumbers, dill, kale, leeks, lettuce, onions, parsley, peppers, potatoes, rhubarb, squash, strawberries, tomatoes and zucchini. It's a common sense solution to gardening in areas with too much clay in the soil and too much water everywhere. Additionally, raised beds allow me to combine ideal proportions of compost, sand, and soil depending on what I plant in specific beds.
