www.axellandscape.com --- Here's a recent two-tiered retaining wall design and installation in Minneapolis, MN. This is Versalok retaining wall block, with Willow Creek pavers for the sidewalk.
The project took three days, 8 tons of class 5 base, 12 pallets of block (about 15 tons worth), three pallets of pavers (4 tons or so), 6 tons of rock backfill for the walls, sod, and mulch.
Below is info on some of the tools we use every day:
For gluing concrete products, we use Loctite PL Premium or PL MAX adhesive.
About the Ziplevel--- it's the best elevation measuring device there is. We haven't used laser levels in 12-13 years. Only ziplevels. They are so much quicker and easier to use. Powered by one 9 volt battery.
Ziplevel Pro 2000: amzn.to/2DetMOt
Ziplevel Pro 2000B: (Shorter cord, does not come with accessory stuff you'll need): amzn.to/2rRgw9P
Stabila Levels: The best levels I've found. I still have and use my original Stabila 72" level from 16 years ago. Amazon has an amazing deal on a full set (78", 48", 32", 24", 16",10"), which costs about what two big Stabilas would cost! amzn.to/2LvehSM
Milwaukee Cordless 1/2" Impact Wrench with case and batteries. We used this to remove the fence in the video. I also use it to get tires on and off our trucks and Bobcats. I'm amazed how much power it has: amzn.to/2CuQ4cn
Stihl TS700 Cutoff Saw: tinyurl.com/y8...
Jobsite Toolbox-- I'll be making an entire video on how awesome this is. We replaced the one in this video with this one. It's 74" wide, 5' tall, and holds an insane amount of stuff. Load and unload all your tools in one shot with your Bobcat. Acme Tool has the best price I found, and free shipping: tinyurl.com/y7...

Coming from someone with your experience and training, that comment means a lot. Really! What a compliment, and we surely appreciate it! Thanks for taking the time to see the video (it took me a lot of hours to put together, as you can imagine) and for making such a nice comment. I have about 12 other projects filmed and ready to edit into videos like this, and your comment makes me excited to get them made. Thanks again!

With no concrete footing or rebar, I predict that the wall has a less than 20 year life span. Frost heaving and water undercutting will destroy this thing. But then you will get paid to do it again!

You don't know how many times I have seen people put modified (instead of clean stone) behind a wall only to have the wall push out in a few years. I have made a living repairing SRW's and this is one of the most quality examples of the way it's properly done. Their is still hope after all. Good Luck

There are plastic grates in the face of the wall which allow the water to get out. The length of drain tile which collects the downspout on their house goes directly out a grate in the lower wall and onto the sidewalk.
@alexkane5123
@alexkane5123 11 лет назад
Nicely done, just a few tips.... the picture of two walls joining.. the cut cap is not aesteticly pleasing. Next time, cut one larger cap to make the fit. Also, the walls should be the same height so they match but they are not which again does not look right. Thirdly, the drainage pipe can be installed in the drainage rock, not in the soil and the depth of the drainage rock should be more. The more drainage rock, the more stability and strength the wall will have. All things considered,good

Nice looking job maintaining continuity with the neighbor's restaining wall, except for color. Maybe it's the video quality, but I didn't see rebars going along the length of the retaining wall. How does the retaining wall get lateral support from tipping over?
@nicknoland9704
@nicknoland9704 5 лет назад
Rebar would deteriorate and fail in this type of system. This is a Versa-Lok wall, specifically a Mosaic wall. It's a pinning system. Every block in pinned to the ones below it. The pins are a type of polymer or plastic that won't corrode like rebar.
@Axellandscape
@Axellandscape 5 лет назад
@@nicknoland9704 Yes, you are quite right. Also each row of block steps back 1" from the row it's set on. So the wall has a natural slight lean back into the hill. It would take a lot of pressure to push the wall forward, and with all that drainage rock back there, there's no way to generate that sort of pressure. Now, WITHOUT drainage rock, water would build up, freeze, and cause a ton of pressure.... which is why we always use lots and lots of drainage rock. ;)
@nicknoland9704
@nicknoland9704 5 лет назад
@@Axellandscape - You would be what we call a professional! Not an internet warrior lol.. I work for a company in Colorado who manufactures and sells Versa-Lok.
@martygray4726
@martygray4726 9 лет назад
I see some problems with the construction of these retaining walls. 1st the embedment is not deep enough, Versa-lok references NCMA and NCMA requires 6" embedment. For the drainage pipe, I would have used one that was already wrapped in filter fabric, rather than lay a filter fabric over the pipe. The drainage rock should have been 12" deep per Versa-lok, Drainage rock performs 2 functions to allow water to flow and so you do not need to compact immediately behind the wall causing the wall to budge during construction. The top wall base was placed on top soil. If you ever seen a wall that has a dip in it. It is because the soil below the footing was soft or was placed on inappropriate soil. Again the drainage rock on the upper wall was not deep enough. What will happen here is the soil that was placed up here will settle (because it was not packed properly) and the sod will sink over time causing a channel behind the retaining wall. In the lower wall you will not notice this because of the mulch, But in the area behind the upper wall you will notice this. The final comment I have about his project is because this is a tier wall the distance between the 2 walls should have been twice the total height of the lower wall (including buried and cap). Because they are closer than that, the lower wall thinks that the upper wall is right above it. So instead of a 3 foot wall and 2.5 foot wall you really have a 5.5 foot wall and a 5.5 foot wall without geogrid can stand up for a while, over time that chance of failure is greater.
@shaymoose17
@shaymoose17 8 лет назад
+Marty Gray You're so by the book lol If you have any background in construction or landscaping you know that you have to improvise for each site. Don't take that as me saying 'cutting corners' b/c that's not what I mean. What you're describing as the proper way is for handling serious loads. If you're going to park a car on top with a concrete slab or putting a shed on top or if the slope of the lawn was at a 3:1 ratio for example then yes you would want to take those extra measures to build with geogrid and properly spaced tiers. When you're matching up walls with step heights, you have to make it work bud.

I was always under the assumption that aligning vertical seams of one course to the next higher course is an engineering no-no as it creates a local source of weakness and damages the load sharing continuity of the all. There are several places where vertical seams align to the a lower or higher course of blocks. Is there a reason why you did this?
@Axellandscape
@Axellandscape 4 года назад
This block (called Versalok Mosaic) is designed to be installed that way. It has 6" and 4" pieces which combine to make a 10" tall panel. The panels alternate so you don't have vertical lines taller than the 10" of each panel. Blocks are all held to the one beneath with pins. Good question you had-- normally you would not have vertical lines but in a "Mosaic" style wall (you can make these with natural stone, too) you can. www.versa-lok.com/products/residential/mosaic/

As a DIYer, is there enough gravel behind the walls to prevent frost heave?
@Axellandscape
@Axellandscape 5 лет назад
Yes, that gravel allows most of the water from behind the walls to get out. So generally, walls like this won't move at all over the winter, as far as what the eye can see. Obviously as the ground freezes and thaws it will flex a little, but that's the whole idea with segmental retaining wall block.... it can flex. Poured concrete can't, which is why we don't typically build walls that way in our climate.

@robetheridge6999

Steve Sanchez I have a few more questions; 1. Why was there no geo grid? 2. Why did they use fabric that will cause an extra load on the wall? 3. Where‘s the 12“ base on the upper walls? 4. Why not encourage using a similar color stone with walls at the same level so that the walls could be spliced together? The walls look good, but are not stable, I guarantee.

Thanks a lot for the comments... it is hard to see in the video, but the two neighbors' walls are different heights because the neighbor on the left is at a higher elevation. Also the clients didn't want their walls the exact same height. The drainage pipe is in the drainage rock, with fabric over and behind it. Then the drainage rock then fills as high up behind the wall as possible, while still leaving space for plants and mulch. Thanks!

Your work is beautiful! I'm curious would it be possible to put a handrail back? If prefer it mounted on the edge of the wall. Or would it need to be attached to the concrete steps to be secure/study/up to code? What if you used adhesive on all of the layers off the wall under the area the rail would go? Would it be solid enough? I would need a rail for kids, grandparents, even myself carrying heavy things etc. I think it would look nicer mounted on the wall's edge next to the steps.

Thanks! They are a lot of work, aren't they? We're fortunate to have a lot of equipment to help us.

The retaining wall looks fantastic. But let's be honest, the money spent on this project should have gone into the house itself. What a dump.

I Will hope you have opening in the wall where you discharge any accumulation of water in the winter time. You are not allow to send water to the next neighbor down street. You must be sure, the water do not freeze during the winter.

Wouldn't the water be discharged throughout the drain pipe. It is like a perforated drain pipe is not it?
