Another great build and video. I really appreciate that you shared at the end things you might do differently once you were finished. I know when I complete a project I always have a few and I feel like those can be some of the most valuable things to share. Keep up the great work, it’s inspiring. 👍

I'm working on my own router table and possibly youtube channel and you're an inspiration. I had to have the walnut trim and I scored a great deal on a bunch of ambrosia maple last week. I like your attitude and descriptions. I have always built stuff having a construction background, but I have been in law enforcement for the last couple decades and trying to plan out my retirement which is coming in a couple years. I think I was meant to do something like this.

This is one of the coolest DIY Router tables on RU-vid. I've seen a bigger one, but it was for a different shop, the builder specifically wanted it to be 42" or 44" so as to do double duty as an extension of the Miter Saw table area. That Amber makes it look like a desk from Jr. High Wood Shop.! That's why you subconsciously don't like it.😎

Nice job Matt! The 'design change' on the back trim looks great, we all have design changes in our projects. I'm addressing one of my fears this weekend. I have my first end grain cutting board in clamps! I was going to hold off making one until I got a drum sander (excuse to buy a new tool???) but decided to give it a try. God bless you my brother.

That is awesome Matt I can appreciate how much work goes into this not only are you building but your filming. My old boss use to say it's OK to make mistakes as long as you learn from it and can fix it otherwise it's a wasted mistake. I would never know you cut that short looking at the final product. Fantastic job 😁👍

Thankyou for keeping your "big dummy" moments in your videos. Makes me feel better about mine. Thankyou also for admitting that you feared building that table, fear keeps me from eventually being a better me as well, but I'm constantly working on it. It really helps when I see an accomplished, woodworker/youtuber/Maker like you, admit that you STILL have it. Love the content, please keep them coming and God bless you and yours. Can't wait to build this table! Ps. Love that you build in a small space too. I too work in a small shop. I have about half the space you do and have to take most of my tools outside to cut and sand to keep shop/laundry room, pantry free from dust. It's sometimes frustrating, but doable.

I will be purchasing the collection on your site that has this as well as other projects that are of interest to me. When I was looking for a router to double for router table use as well, I was torn between the Bosch and the Dewalt. I read several reviews that mentioned the Bosch wasn’t designed for use upside down, so failures were common unless they had decent dust collection. I’m curious to see how it goes. Hopefully the reviews were for older versions or something. Great looking table, regardless. This is one project I will definitely be tackling soon

@hamilde
@hamilde 3 года назад
That looks awesome (and I thought the yellow looked good but I was in my 20's in the 1980's, so what do I know). I have a suggestion. I am planning on rebuilding my router table that I built several years ago. I put a 4 inch dust collection port behind my router. If I rebuild it, I will put the pipe directly under the router and route it to the back of the cabinet. While my dust collector does a great job of sucking the chips into the box, a large amount of chips pile up under the router and I have to clean it out frequently.
@davidkendrick3158
@davidkendrick3158 3 года назад
@Darin Hamilton You might take a look at your airflow. If that compartment is too airtight, it won't have enough airflow for the dust collection and you'll end up with chip accumulation in certain spots. To test that, prop open the front door with a small block of wood and route a test piece. If the dust collection improves, then airflow is your problem and you'll need to put some air intake holes into that compartment to allow for greater airflow. Just take a 1/2" forstner bit and drill 6-8 holes in the back and that will work without them being visible.
@hamilde
@hamilde 3 года назад
@@davidkendrick3158 I drilled some holes in the bottom of the front door, figuring that the air flow from front to back would help, but it didn't. I always thought about making the hole larger to increase the flow . I also thought of some other solutions but never got around to it. It isn't a big problem but if I built it again, I would put the pipe directly under the router.

I purchased the fence you used. Did you have difficulty making the supplied machine screw to secure the dust port work? Minor issue, but the one I got is forcing me to come up with an alternative solution. Looks like I got the bad one that got pass QC.

Hey Carl, I didn't have any issues with mine.

A quick tip I noticed some people do for the router area for dust collection is they add a angle piece so that the dust slop’s to the back of the router area… just thought that would be another nice idea… love the build and also glad you kept the mistake in there as well👍

this will be my next shop project. presently i have a veritas(lee valley) router table(steel top, fence and crosscutthingy) but it's too small. i bought the jessem tabletop, lift, fence and crosscut arm, now to build a cabinet two main priorities, first is dust collection, second is bit and small part storage in my small semiproduction shop, i have 6 routers, so wrenches, colletts, spare bases, guides etc etc. they all have to go somewhere one space that is wasted in all router tables on you tube is in front of the router/lift, great place for small tools like collett wrenches and allen keys, i will be figuring that one out! behind the router is also empty but very limited access of course

Ya know that walnut on the back of the top will be nice to be flush so you can push it right up to the wall... Hay may only save an inch but still nice to put it as close to the wall as possible... so I'd say it was meant to be that way ;)

It looks great. Thank goodness you removed the "80s look." Love how you show everything and even discuss how fear held you back. Thank you for continuing to teach and inspire.

I really like that look. Natural finish never goes out of style, like classic men's suits. I LOATHE white washed oak, etc. Trendy ain't cool!

I bought the plan and getting ready to build the cabinet. I ended up buying a finished top from Amazon. I wanted the double track for a miter gauge and T-bolts. I strongly dislike working with MDF. I was looking at a hardwood plywood by the time I priced everything out. Could buy a fully laminated MDF top with the track I wanted for like $50 more than I could build the top. Plus the top came with a 3/8 aluminum router plate. The fence was the same deal only cheaper than I could build it. I have wanted a router lift forever. I will say most of the name brand lifts are super nice. But I worked machine shops most of my life. I know what things cost to build $300 to $400 is more than I want to pay. I built my own from wood scraps in my trash bin and hardware. My top is finished, I just need the cabinet to set it on. Someday I may build another top. I think a clear coated red oak plywood top with walnut trim would look nice. But I have a lot of projects I need to do, so I doubt that will happen. I may modify this table with fold down table extension wings. I want a long table jointer but do not have the room in my small shop. I plan on using this router table as my jointer.

Really nice build Matt! It is scary how close this is to the router table I built earlier this year. The only real difference on the cabinet is that you used the walnut edgebanding and I did full face drawers/doors on mine. I like that you own your mistakes and even better that you show us your solutions. I made my top very similarly, I used a lower layer of 3/4" Baltic Birch and a top layer of 3/4" MDF, laminated together, and then laminate (formica) on top of that. It worked out really well and then I attached it with almost no overhang on the back (maybe 1/4"), so your "mistake" looks about like my Plan! One suggestion when you install your dust collection.... I put my 4" dust port on the back, so that the bottom of the opening is flush with the bottom of the router compartment. I used a cove bit on the inside bottom of my door to create a path for some air to get in and sweep across the bottom into the dust port. It works very well. I only get the smallest amount of dust/chips in the back corners. If that ever starts to bother me (not yet!) I can put some angle baffles back there. You are gonna love that new router table. Thanks for sharing!

That is how I laminated my outfeed table/router table. I trimmed both the table top and the router lift in mahogany. Really love how it turned out. Working on the dust collection next.
