Wow, an English Shepherd! Smartest dog in the world in my experience! I grew up on a farm in Alabama with English Shepherds for protecting livestock and children from rattle snakes and such. They kept me from getting a Whipping by my parents too. Lol.

Could you have used 2 inch thick boards for tabletop? Was it b/c of the extra weight?

Yes, it was to keep the weight down and make my wood go further.

You could have made that drill press in the horizontal plane negating the use of the ladder.
