How To Build a Scaffold Board Table & Prevent Cupping

In this video I demonstrate how to build build a reclaimed scaffold board table and prevent cupping over time. I use several techniques some are alternating the grain pattern, routing supports struts from plywood, drying out the timber to below 12% and being as selective as possible with the timber.
There are a couple of other things I did but forgot to mention, I kept the table in the house flat on the floor for three days to acclimatise to the environment, I also turned down the radiator next to the table and will leave this off for about 6 weeks.
If you have any further questions then please don't hesitate to ask in the comments.

So I built this table, albeit a little bigger ( 5 boards wide and the full 3.9m long ). The build went really well, the boards started off at 5 or 6% humidity, but after a week in the house, despite putting 18mm construction ply 22mm deep into the boards at 600mm intervals as shown in this video, the board still cupped. Hey, its a nice table and saved me thousands on a dining room table, but I'd recommend some wrought iron or steel embedded in the timber underneath to prevent the cupping. The inset ply looks nice, but it warped along with the boards and I suspect it made zero difference to the cupping. So, thanks of the great video, it gave me the confidence to give it a try myself and now I have a lovely table. I'm off now to find some steel to fix to the underside of the table and straighten it out. :-)

Hi Greg that's really unfortunate, 5% moisture cupping is very rare indeed however timber does like to surprise us occasionally. My timber was around 12% and the table has shown no cupping what's however there is a couple of cracks. The cracks generally happen because of the braces and no allowing the timber to move. Basically my advice is not to use construction timber if at all possible, scaffold boards are not even fit for construction never mind furniture really so we do take a chance when using them. I'm glad it's given you the confidence to try though and I'm sure once you fix the table you more than likely won't have any further issues due to the timber being fully acclimated with its environment. Best of luck.🙂

Cheers Emma, congratulations on your ivf success by the way, I just watched your videos. Key list to stop any cupping. 1, make sure that you dry out the timber down to 12% or below. 2, bring the timber into the house to acclimatise. 3. Do everything in this video. 4, Bread board ends can be added if you like this look, they offer even more insurance against cupping. Thanks for watching.

@karlpopewoodcraft
@karlpopewoodcraft Год назад
Hi Lew, probably best to mortise the attachment point into the timber like you said, but I don't think it entirely necessary. All depends on the size of the table and the weight of the top. This design has no racking issues at all as the steel legs are very sturdy.

Thanks for the great video! I’m giving my first table top build ago at the moment and I’ve invested in the Liberon and wickes top coats that you have used too. However I have seen on other videos people using a pre stain to prevent blotching. When you used white spirit to wipe the wood down before staining is that basically the same thing? I also notice you mixed white spirit into your mix of liberon colours. How ever on the back of the pin it says not to. So just want to make sure I understood that right? Many thanks in advance!

Hi Steve it would be dangerous of me to say don't use the guard etc. The riving knife is by far the most important safety device on your table saw never remove it, the guard is also very important and also improves dust collection massively. I do remove my guard on occasions but would never recommend.

Hi Dave, honestly as long as you make sure the timber is down to about 10% moisture I think you are fine. I personally don't sell reclaimed scaffold board tables to clients as I just think there to unpredictable, but many people do with success. As long as the client knows that it's a rustic table and some movement is possible and cracks may appear over time then that's acceptable, but I'd make sure it's clear and understood 😊

@@karlpopewoodcraft Got ya. I actually just found a supplier today that sells brand new scaff boards cheaper than the reclaimed ones I was buying before. Which leads me to believe we live in a world where more environmentally friendly wood, although inferior quality, costs more. Have to say it's really refreshing seeing a UK based woodworker and showing ways to do things on a budget (the bracing with plywood for example really well thought out). @karlpopewoodcraft
@karlpopewoodcraft 3 года назад
Hi Markie firstly thank you, secondly ye most of my paid commissions are hardwood a mixture but mainly oak European and American, but I get quite a few skids from a friend who works on the docks and these are generally tropical and mixed african and American woods. Find a good local timber merchants not a national one and see what they can offer. Im actually going to do an interview on Thursday with my local timber merchants about the current climate, stocks, prices ext. Hopefully I'll have a video out real soon on the situation.

Great video, how's it held up? I've been commissioned to make one of these and all my boards have settled around 12%. Most of them have pith in them. I'm in two minds: glue boards together to make a solid top, or just attached each to the frame to allow for more movement. I've heard even with proper prep the amount of cupping and splitting can be huge

Hi James mine has aged well no issues, however you have heard correctly. Personally I'd never make a table for a client from scaffolding boards as there way to unpredictable. I'd probably go for the option of just attaching to the frame if that's OK for the client. Make sure the client is aware of the risk with Spruce if they don't want the risk charge more and use unsorted pine. Hope this helps mate in your decision.
