In this video, we'll take a look at some DIY home decor by showing how to build a shadow box. Shadow boxes are great beginner woodworker projects because they don't have to be built with complex joinery. Plus, they can be used as the foundation for signs, display cases, or even trays.
Materials used:
8 ft 1x2
1/4 inch plywood
Tools used:
Craftsman table saw
Dewalt Random Orbital Sander
Craftsman Router

You should join your local sanders anonymous for help. Seriously though, the well timed joked really make the video more enjoyable.

Joining Sander’s Anonymous would be admitting I have a problem and I’m not ready to do that yet 😆 Thanks for the great comment and thanks for watching!

You are hilarious!! I was looking for how to make a shadow box and your video popped up in my search. I'm glad it did, because you have a great sense of humor and that alone makes me want to subscribe to your channel. PS... I am not a woodworker, just a crafter that balked at the price of shadow boxes at the store.

I bought a shadowbox and spent three weeks on the display but now it wont fit back into the slots? Literally one corner bent back so what do I do to actually assemble it. I am baffled?

Video was easy to follow only we don’t have a table saw ugh also how do u add the glass to it does it sit on top of it ?
@WhiteLabWorkshop
@WhiteLabWorkshop 4 года назад
Great to hear, thank you! A project like this can be done without a table saw. You just may need to get creative with the tools you have. For mine, I didn’t need to add glass to it. However, you could make another frame to inset the glass into and attach it to the front with small hinges.

Hey, White Lab, Would you please let me know the dimensions of your beautiful sled? I WILL make one. I see it's 3/4" ply and it's double ply on the vertical pieces.
@WhiteLabWorkshop
@WhiteLabWorkshop 3 года назад
First of all, thank you for the nice compliment! I love my crosscut sled. It’s 37 inches wide by 24 inches deep. I used 1/2 inch MDF for the bottom and glued together 3/4 inch plywood, as you noticed, for the verticals. I positioned the kerf slightly to the right of center, so more sled goes to the left. And I stopped the vertical pieces about 3 inches short of the bottom, on the left side, to give me room to clamp extension stop blocks on. That last part has been a great benefit, when needed. Also, add some extra plywood where the blade would come through as a safety precaution. Have fun with it!
@genesanders1199
@genesanders1199 3 года назад
@@WhiteLabWorkshop thanks for the detailed response. It’s exactly what I needed. Don’t know how you’d clamp an extension on the left end.
@genesanders1199
@genesanders1199 3 года назад
@@WhiteLabWorkshop ok it’s to clamp a stop block. I read it wrong but I could clamp over the top as well as around the end. Oh well whatever I want to do. Thanks again.

1:10 in this early video of mine shows what I meant about an extension for a stop block: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JlFLy-vbw9Q.html. Good luck with it!

This one is getting painted and will get some trinkets for a fun award for a friend of mine. I don’t want to say specifically, in the off-chance he sees this, but it’s pretty specific to an activity we both participate in anyway. Though my wife saw it and has requested more for Cricut sign making.

Hi Could Please Have Size For All of Wood Piece
@WhiteLabWorkshop
@WhiteLabWorkshop 3 года назад
Hello! In the US, the frame material is called 1x2. It is actually 3/4 inch by 1.5 inches. The backer is 1/4 inch plywood. Size is whatever you need for your application.

How did you install plexiglass?
@WhiteLabWorkshop
@WhiteLabWorkshop 2 года назад
I didn’t install any glass in mine. An extra dado around the frame to accept the glass would be an easy addition. Then add it when assembling the frame.

How would you put a glass on it?
@WhiteLabWorkshop
@WhiteLabWorkshop 4 года назад
My application didn’t call for it, but there’s a couple of options I can think of right away. You could build a frame with the glass inset in it with hot glue or caulk to hold it, then mount it with hinges. Another option would be recess the glass in the front of the shadow box and add some trim pieces with finishing nails to hold it, once your pieces are mounted for display. Obviously that would be more permanent. Just depends what your use case is. Thanks for watching!
