How To Build a Shaker Style Bench - Reclaimed White Oak

In this episode, we build a shaker style bench. This bench was inspired by a scene in the movie One Flew Over The Cuckoo‘s nest. About 3/4 of the way into the movie, Jack Nicholson‘s character invites a few women into the sanitarium… There is a scene where Actor Scatman Crothers walks into a large institutional bathroom with one of the ladies and you can see this bench. You can see a picture of that scene on our website. www.todayscraf... We built this bench with Reclaimed white oak and plan to finish it with an antique painted white finish, and will have that portion of the project video up next week along with plans for this project.

Looks great you guys. Considering spring is just around the corner...and BBQ season too...I wonder if you would consider making a BBQ cabinet (of sorts) that holds utensils, spices, and bbq sauce and incorporates an outdoor fixture one could use to compliment their cooking environment and could be relocated if needed during the off season. Cheers!

Great built, I have reclaimed oak for a project as well. The top will have the remnants of the mortiest pocket to use as a handle.

Very cool build. I love the old oak wood… so for the finishing, stressed white bottom, so you can still see a bit of the old wood. and the seat a bit darker in oil, to give it contrast..

For a suggestion on “what to build next?,” I’d really love to see a nice ladder shelf with true mortise and tenon work. Not a lot of videos out there on ladder shelves that aren’t screwed together. Awesome channel and great to see the partnership with John.

Terrific bench build guys! I would stress the wood a bit more, round the edges and then finish it with Amber Shellac.

Thinking about building this, but sized up for a taller person. What is the purpose of the two short pieces glued and screwed to the tops of the legs? They don't appear to add any strength or support. They just thicken the tops of the legs? Just curious.

Just going by what was in the film! My guess is yes just to add some strength and visual mass.
