This will be a multi-part series featured on this blog on how to build a shed. This particular section will cover how I build a shed or deck foundation using post / concrete construction. These types of floor joist systems are very strong and will last many many years in the hot Florida weather. In this build, I am choosing to build a lean-to style shed that will sit next to my existing cook lofted barn.

I believe here in New Zealand our regs would require the outside frame to be sitting on bearers on the posts for stronger support rather than relying on screws or even bolts which could shear. Also a double for each outside 6x2. I know it’s only a small shed but one never knows what could happen with any future use, so better to over strengthen. Also the span of the joists seem rather long without anything under the middle to help support and stop any sag.
@Archifx
@Archifx 3 года назад
Shed still sitting there good as the day I built it. Has a VW beetle sitting in there and a SCAG tiger cat 2 zero turn in it on the regular. It would take a bulldozer’s weight to “shear the lags in half” the plywoood floor and the joists would crack before anything would ever happen to the bolts. There’s too many of them. This way works fine. Aren’t building a piano here... it’s a friggin shed.

They aren't going to shear. People who continuously make that claim do not understand how fasteners work.

Thank you! Why not to use pavers & put the roof attached to the existing shed over it? What disadvantages and advantages does this solution has? If you make addition to the existing shed that’s the total square footage includes the existing shed and the new addition? If so it will exceed 200 ft.² and in this case you will need to ask for permit from the local government.?

2 x 6 no good for floors it’s fine for ceilings your 2 x 6 should be 3 inches short of 8 feet to account for your ledgers your outside beam should be doubled up to carry the load of the joist that are not supported by the posts the post should be underneath your beams I take it you live in Florida so I would assume there are some hurricane codesYou’re fast and her choice is awesome you could refine your technique make sure you know the codes in your area if it’s carrying live load you don’t want to buy six it’ll be sagging in a couple years Good On ya for taking on the challenge All outside edges should be doubled especially the spans to support the walls above one floor Joyce caring a wall is not very strong
@Archifx

All good advice. I’ve had great success with 2x6 as joists when they’re 16”OC. Like I mention in the longer video on the actual shed... light duty use. You can always build and build and make stronger and stronger. This will do the trick for the use case.

I’m going to keep a live update on this yearly so we can use it as a test dummy. I’m curious to see if she’ll sag and how long. The Cook building I have next to it uses 2x6 and I’ve had that for about 8 years now. Zero sag... time will tell

Did you ever think about putting some angle iron on the ground posts underneath the 2x6's? I don't like the idea of simply using deck screws to support them.
@Archifx
@Archifx 5 лет назад
Yeh... a better idea if you’re wanting more strength is to use galvi- thru bolts. Very strong.
@brikshoe6259
@brikshoe6259 3 года назад
Those GRKs aren't "deck screws", they are structural screws. Nonetheless, your point is well-taken that the reduced shear strength of screws may be a concern. However, there are better, easier, and more commonly-accepted techniques of supporting rim joists rather than introducing iron into the equation.

Put your weight on top of the 4x4 posts for sheds and decks. Bolts will eventually fail, so lag bolts on the sides are insufficient and can be a huge risk when a structure is suspended.
@Archifx
@Archifx 3 года назад
Yeah. That’s if the structure would last 100 years. The bolts will outlast the wood. It’s a shed. Not a house.

Google 3:4:5 triangle method.

Run a string off the side of the far end of the shed, and slowly close the distance between the string and shed until it just barely touches the shed. You ain’t building cabinets, that’s the quickest easiest way, although the corner to corner and 3,4,5 method works great, they take more time for something so simple
