To make a box from beginning to end and end with a superb result is usually the dream of every new woodworker. We combined the art of woodworking with superb no-frills videography to present a box-making video that takes out the guesswork and inspires you to make your heirloom box.
Though it is lovely to look at, it's far from complicated as we take you step by step through the traditions of dovetailing and box-making. No noise, no fuss, just, complete clarity using a handful of common hand tools.
Almost any wood will work: choose something straight-grained and knot-free to keep things simple. The box is a new design for everyone to learn boxmaking from, so you cannot have seen this elsewhere, and several unique nuances will open your eyes to creating something very special!

The box you see Paul make in this video is now no longer available for sale (benefits go to a local charity). Thank you to all that took part! - Team Paul Drawings and cutting list are here: paulsellers.com/simple-dovetailed-box-drawings/ Why is Paul Selling the box? This box is being sold to raise money for a local Preschool to say thank you for the great care they took of one of his family members this past year. All proceeds (minus any fees or taxes) will be donated to the Pre-School.

Same here. I dare to say that Mr. Sellers is my mentor. I mean, if I hadn't found his channel and blog, I probably would have given up. Because most of the woodworkers now days teach that you need this and that pricey electric power tool etc, but this man showed that you can do just about anything without those machines. Ps. if you like hand tool woodworking and you're on a budget, check out Rex Krueger.

Another excellent video. I never tire of watching you doing, and explaining, everything from start to finish with no short-cuts or edits, no noise or gimmicky graphics. At one point you apologised for checking and re-checking and being "boring" but it is never boring, it is a calming immersive experience watching your skills in practice and listening to your voice of experience. You are often imitated on RU-vid, but never bettered. You've made my day by releasing this new video.

Gustav Stickley used an Old World aphorism, "Lyfe So Short, The Craft So Long To Lern" for his company's motto that matches up with an old blues song my late wife, Lisa Kindred, used to sing, "If You Live Your Time will Come". And Mr. Sellers, your time has come. This "Simple Dovetailed Box" lesson has so many teachable moments in it, including some unplanned ones, that all go to show that intelligent design and careful execution ["measure Twice, cut Once"] will allow for any unexpected alterations that may be necessary along the way. "Good Show" as they say on your side of the pond and thank you.

Hello Paul. I follow several hand tool woodworkers and they use different ways to make dovetail joints. They are all excellent woodworkers, I am sure you know them all, and their methods all have their advantages and sometimes flaws. But when I see how you easily create the perfect dovetail joint, I can only conclude one thing: you are simply the best! The knife wall is one of my favorite things I learned from you. Greetings from Flanders (Yes, there are also young guys aged 69 in Flanders who like to do woodworking with hand tools).

Perhaps a simple box (not for me!), but far from just a simple video. There is so much instructional content packed into this two hours. This video is just jam packed with little gems of know how. Clear, precise, and wonderfully patient! RU-vid has stressed “shorts” for some reason, but Paul has gone “against the grain” and given us so much more value with this project. Worth watching every second! Thank you, Paul!

Mr. Sellers, I ran into the wrong grain direction on the dovetail clean up recently and I am so happy I had just seen this tip on your video. I remember trying it years ago but didn't have success due to the small gap you experienced. Seeing the same problem, and your use of an additional shim, made all the difference. You could have skipped over and edited it out but when we can see you fix a problem you run into, odds are we are running into the same issues. I've said it before but I'll say it again. Thank you, Sir. You are a wonderful teacher and have made me a better woodworker. I wish you only the best.

1:39:08 So the lid hinges by using two screws whose threads bite into the LID, but passthrough the walls so the shank can rotate freely. So the screw selections matters for shank length so the threads can never bite into the lid. Prolly gotta wax the shanks a touch so there is less friction over time that may cause the threads to tighten/loosen. Could also drill the holes depths a bit differently so the screw can be unscrewed soft locking the lid.

What a pleasure to watch Paul work. Of all things, I've got to ask what paper towel he uses though! I was surprised to see that used to finish. Every brand I have used in the kitchen easily sheds fibres if used on anything even slightly abrasive. (Perhaps Paul gets his wood surface so silky smooth there is nothing for the paper to catch on?!)

A nice, simple box. Even a base for a non-simple box that can have inlays or carving. Leather innards. If anyone needs to remove those filed off screws you can get a _left_ hand drill bit which may remove them simply by drilling the hole. If not, then apply a _screw extractor_ to the drilled hole and out she comes.
