How to Build a Simple Emergency Brick Cook Stove

This is NOT for permanent use, or even close. It is for an emergency when you are using only what you can find and put together "ad hoc" in a quick moment. It is simple but could easily feel complicated if you were doing it under pressure in a crisis. So go outside and play with some old bricks in the back yard. Cook a quick meal and enjoy the simple adventure of it....(leave your cell phone inside the house and it will become even more enjoyable. I promise! :)) This is just one of many ways to make emergency preparedness fun. Please use caution, use only dry bricks, and know there is risk involved with fire.

I have read something about not using these types of bricks due to lead? And the heat can make the explode...any thoughts or experience in this? I have a bunch of old bricks and was going to make a rocket stove but wasn't sure if I should use them.
@PREPSTEADERS
@PREPSTEADERS 2 года назад
Lisa, wet "waterlogged" bricks or rocks can explode when exposed to high heat. A little rain doesn't hurt, but if they have been buried in wet mud or a creek bank don't use those! I would not be concerned about lead in these bricks, mostly because I am only cooking over the fire from the sticks in the center...if I was cooking on top of the brick surface, then I would take that more into consideration...unless it was a survival situation and only used as a temporary solution. :) Thank you for the question!

Another hack that I learned from my Hungarian in-laws...... when those bricks are super hot after doing your cooking, wrap them up in towels and put them in the bed or sleeping bag by your feet. Stays hot a long time and can keep you from freezing in a tough spot.

You don't need to mess with breaking bricks in half. All you need to do is simply slide two opposing base bricks out an inch or two lengthwise. The angles that the air would be coming in might even create a vortex of air for a cleaner burn, and the shifted bricks would be easy to slide out more to clean out the base of ash or bits that fall through. I also don't see the need to have the base below the fire grate be two layers high. Move the grate down to the first layer, and let the superheated air do the cooking. Easiest way to create a cooking platform at the top is to lay two bricks flat across the corners, they'll have the stability to safely hold a kettle/pot/pan and be easy to adjust for size.
@doroparker1702
@doroparker1702 Год назад
Yepp. I would build the whole thing laying the stones flat. She built them very high but not stable. There is no need to build very high. Stability is safer. It is a great idea though. Nobody really needs to own a grill as long as there are some bricks around.

The cooking grill needs to be absolutely stable-not precariously balanced on wobbly stones. I have had two cheap grills where the grate was not secure, and I lost the meat down into the coals. Very infuriating! My Weber is the only grill that hasn't has an accident. Without mortar, I can imagine that whole loose brick tower collapsing if anyone bumped it. Jenga & Fire. That might be an exciting new game!

Ok this is a serious warning, be very careful what type of grate you use!! Make sure it's meant for FOOD CONTACT if you use for example old style refrigerator grates they were not treated for cooking contact and some people got extremely ill after using them, BBQ grills are treated to be safe, if you don't know where it came from be safe and don't let your food touch it

Cast iron grates don't have those problems. Prepare ahead of time for SHTF events. Go to club store for just the grate or even yard sales for old BBQ. Also, if you can, buy fireplace bricks. They don't fail under extream heat.
@sandym6760
@sandym6760 Год назад
Exactly what I was thinking. Also, you want something that was created for high, direct heat. For example, something salvaged from a grill or an oven. When she said the grate was from a crock pot I was concerned about how long it would last above a vortex like that -- when the meat went directly on it I cringed because there's no telling what chemicals are going to be released from it by the direct fire under it. Overall, a good, quick method of cooking a meal. I love Rocket Stoves and Heaters, and the many ways they can be built once you know the basics and how they work 😊😊😊

There's no religion in the scriptures as they are given to us from God through Jesus deciples. God's word is for us to have a relationship with Him, so that we can be in obedience to God from our fleshy heart, and not in obedience with the stones of Moses in the OLD TESTAMENT, as no one could be in obedience for the flesh was weak that it couldn't, so God made the law perfect through Jesus in The New Testament so that with our hearts we may WANT to obey God and not HAVE to obey.., but if we want to be right with God we must strive everyday to do so with love, as love abounds all... God isn't about a religion God is about a relationship with His children just as you would have with your own family. God is a living God, he loves us and only wants what's best for us. Being a child of God only comes from the salvation that Jesus Christ has for us all, but we have to want it, we have to believe so that we may come with a repented heart and give our life to Jesus so that we through Jesus Christ can have a new life in Christ. Jesus was crucified on the cross for our sins, not one man is without sin, there is none that is perfect but Jesus who was crucified an innocent man for my sins and your sins and "we" can go to God in Jesus name and ask God for his forgiveness for "our" sins. The Holy Blood of Jesus can make you clean and set you free from whatever you are bound to or enslaved to. Jesus Christ is the only way to God's Holy Kingdom in heaven and that is through the HOLY BLOOD OF JESUS that was shed on the cross and rose in 3 days from the grave... Jesus is The Way, The Truth and The Life. Jesus is the resurrection of LIFE AFTER DEATH . GOD IS THE GREAT I AM because He is, GOD of everything, as God created all in the universe and in and on earth and man and woman HE created them, God bless💖🕊️

Christa as I watched you building this I was wondering how you were going to bring the air in. Then I thought you were going to show us that the air leakage between the bricks was going to be the right amount of air to control the burn rate, then when you replaced the lower bricks I was thinking maybe you were going to swing the bottom brick out like a little door to control the burn rate. You had my brain working overtime. Now I will have to build this and try the lower swinging door to control the fire with different woods. Thanks for the video. God Bless

It doesn't have to require sophisticated tools, you can lay out a design using graph paper for either bricks or cinder blocks. You can make it as large or as small as you want, and it's really simple to do. It does require more planning and forethought, however the build will still go quickly and efficiently. I, too, prefer a build that allows you to feed the fuel at the bottom, which is a true rocket stove and burns the wood cleaner and more efficiently. Overall, this is a quick, easy build that you can do without much planning and will get the job done 😊😊😊

Will burn up the little twigs and sticks that fall from the trees in my yard and cook something at the same time. it will definitely help save on electricity just a wee bit. That would actually make the rocket stove less effective. The point is to have fast moving air feeding it from underneath. By adding more holes in non optimal locations, you're proposing just a regular fire with a column above to direct the heat.

Good stove build Christa! Those stoves heat like a blow torch! Try throwing just a little (only a few handfuls) dirt or sand from nearby down first if building on a hard surface. It will stabilize the first course of bricks. It's good to see you back in "production" mode :-).

I make the communion bread for church. I make it on the dough setting on my bread machine. It takes 1 3/4 cups of luke warm water.1 packet of yeast (regular, not quick rise) 4 cups of all-purpose flour and 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of salt. Put into bread machine in that order. Once dough setting is done take bread out and knead on floured surface till air bubble are out and dough springs back when pulled. stretch or flatten to fit the size of the bottom a pie pan, bottom sprayed with Pam. you can take a toothpick and make a few air holes in dough, Cover and let dough rise for 15 minutes, while preheating oven to 400 degrees. When done rising, bake in oven for 40 to 45 minutes. This bread is good if you have few ingredients, and you can do it by hand or by dough setting on bread machine All you need is water, flour, salt and 1 packet of regular yeast.

If only all people in our little clique shared such useful info without all the hype and "I, I, I"! Wishing thinking. Speaking of "I", I've never heard of a discada until your last video. My neighbor used to farm a huge area and yesterday we spoke. He's going to give me all the 22" blades I want and in return, I'm building him and his parents one. They are going to make fantastic Christmas gifts! I and my family would rather receive a gift fashioned with love than the fanciest retail item of the same design. Thank you for all the wonderful information you share with us.

You had me at 'brick'. Lol Good idea when other resources aren't available. But I do have concerns over the safety of this stove. 1. Its not stable. 2. Hot water or grease could burn someone when or if spilled. 3. Not everyone will be able to construct on a flat patio making it even less sound. 4. Regular brick and block can handle only so much heat Short version be very careful. Perhaps if the brick were stacked flat instead of on edge it may help some. That aside I appreciate the idea and creativity. The rocket stove is a super cooker and definitely needed in a crisis. Thanks for the vid. Love them.

She did say it was for emergencies, if I had to make one it would be on very uneven ground, but hey,,, it's an emergency, not for every day use! So you should be careful anyway

Hi, I built one of these and it is working great for us. I had built one before but with the bricks on their side, it worked but wasn´t the greatest. However, this gives it a bit more room in there and works much better, for me! Thanks a bunch!

I just for the track I needed to finish building my rocket stove. I LOVE it. I started with 2 vertical cinder blocks-. For added height. Then I added a 16 inch square patio brick for my raised flat surface.went by your directions (mostly : ) from there : ) it turned out wonderfully!!!!!!! Can't wait to cook on it : ) Thank you!!

Thank you for making this video. Useful and practical when 'survival' is critical. Pros & Cons: Like you said, this is a simple 'brick' rocket stove. And, the goal was to used bricks that are similar in size, shape, and no defects. Otherwise the tower of bricks are unstable and become an accident waiting to happen. The grill that you used for food was 'dangerous' because the feet barely fit on the bricks. The slightest movement of the grill and the feet would've slipped off the edge of the brick. A terrible waste of food and someone could've got burned from the falling grill.
