How to build a simple wooden planter box

This is a shorter version of my latest planter box video. I cut out some of the fat so to speak. I made this planter for my mother in law to replace the one that I made her several years ago. It is very simple with out any trim like the one I did last year but with different material. I hope you enjoy! I put a sketch for the plans on my Face Book account. Here are the drills that I used: amzn.to/2RrZbo8

I've been searching for a simple and easy planter box for about an hour and I'm so glad I found yours. I've never made a planter box but you explained it very clearly and I feel confident that I can build this. You even said what kind of wood and the measurements. Your planter box turn out great. Thank You!

Just wanted to say thanks for posting this video. I am new to making anything out of wood. Thanks to your video here I have made two of these wood planter boxes for my wife. The first was the same as the one in the video. The second was the same design but much larger.

Very nice, easy to make design. Not sure if anybody mentioned it, but if you wanted to have the screws for the legs now show, you could always use pocket holes to connect the 2 leg parts BEFORE you mount the decking board sides, then no screws showing at all outside. It'd increase the difficulty just a bit, but if you hate screws showing on the outside, it'd definitely do the trick.. You could do the same for the bottom pieces to hide the screws there if wanted.

Nice video, lovely planters. I live in England and we have so much rain most of the year, I always make a sacrificial foot for my planters as the end grain will always rot not matter what it’s treated with. I also use resin on end grain if clients want there legs on the ground.

Great build, I'm a beginner and want to build one, a few questions Would pocket holes work on the inside support pieces instead of going through the front and back? and instead of using the 3 vertical support pieces would like a 1x1 around the whole inside as a support use 1 1/4 screws then use the inside support pieces resting on the 1x1, thanks

Project is under $100.00 custome built, will be priceless. compared to a cedar prebuilt at $160.00 plus at Costco that is fake cedar if asked, I am laying 1x6 across bottom, on top of 2z2 as support then length wise. that makes this one piece less used . for me thank you for hte idea on the 2x4 legs

Save money and just run a few more small braces across the bottom, then spend next to nothing for a roll of mesh screening. Roll the screen across the bottom stapling to the braces. Then line the entire box with land scape mesh material. Drains water better also, and you won't lose soil

Very demonstration video, thank you for sharing. A few of other things you need to be complimented on: 1. Your camera is mounted. Thus, we watch a steady video, not a bouncy video. 2. You did not play music over your voice. Background music is extremely annoying. 3. The camera orientation is horizontal, filling the entire screen left and right. A camera incorrectly orientated in the vertical, portrait, orientation creates a stick video with the left and right one-third of the screen cut off. Portrait orientated video to the viewer it as though they are peering through a keyhole or wearing horse blinders. All those aforementioned correct steps produced a video very easy to watch. Sir, I tip my hat to you!

Hi I made 2 of your planters. Thanks for the info. I wanted to bring to your attention that if you use a 2x6 for the side pieces and front and back, you do not have any room to attach the side pieces to the front/back pieces. Since I had already bought 2x6s and had the store cut them for me (could not return them) , I had to change how your instructions fit them together. It would have been ok if the boards for the front and sides were 1x6. What I did to fix the problem was I made the legs adding 2x4s together to get the edge I needed to give me something to screw into. In the beginning of your video you put the second leg piece standing up the long width length. What I had to do was starting from the bottom of the 2 front pieces I added a second 2x4 from there to the bottom of the leg one on top of the other. I did not have a need any longer for the second 2x4 you attached to the leg, as I attached it flat just like the other one lays on top of the first one, but shorter as it starts under the 2 front/back pieces, but ends up flush with the bottom of the first leg. This gave me the 1 1/2 inches I needed to screw into when attaching the side panels to the front and back. Yes I lost a few inches on the length, but I was able to make it work without buying more wood. I am pretty sure that you state that the front /back pieces are 2" thick in the video. The 2x6 is alot thicker than a 1 x 6 [as I am sure you already know LOL] and it added significant weight to the planter. I rewatched the video and you say deck boards, but never said 1x6 or 2x6. I also had to change to 2 1/2 inch deck screws from the 2" ones as they were no longer long enough. Please I would like you to respond to my email. TYVM

For some reason I didn't get an alert about your comment. So sorry. I believe the dimensions are on my website....i just went and looked. I have a drawing on there but you can't really see it well. I have someone working on my website right now and it should be up and going soon. I am working on a way to share plans for all of my projects. Thanks for your comment and once again I am sorry that I just now saw it.

Really like this, pity about the inches though. I’ll try and convert and give it a try! Thank you!

I will start giving metric conversions in the future as I know a lot of my viewers use the metric system.

I have seen something like that several years and I used Kreg Jig on the legs and with glue they do not pull apart. Also using kreg to keep all screws from being seen outside. Your bed is also looking nice

Awesome video Pedro! One question, on that last floor board you put in off camera, did you have to cut it long ways to make it fit? Or did it just lay down flat in there?

I believe that I did. I have made another one out of cedar and I did not have to cut that one long ways. Three boards fit in the bottom perfectly. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-l6D5tTAkLl0.html

Awesome video with clear and not overly chatty instructions. I love the planter, and am going to build a couple for vegetables, I’m planning on making the legs taller, so I don’t have to bend or stoop to tend to the plants. I am also thinking of making the box one board deeper/ taller so I can make it into a wicking bed, but the basic plan you show is great.
