Now you're talking! I would like to have a summer kitchen with a smoke house, a bee hive over and a raised hearth German style kitchen fireplace. Lots of work, but nice addition to an off grid cabin.

Work that mag float back 'n' forth. It will bring up the cream from the concrete. Then smooth it out with the trowl. Looks like a pretty decent setup. I may have to build one of those. Would love to have a smoke house.

I was just planing to build one with almost the same foundation size, after freezing winter:). My build considers changeable pebbles and sand filter above the burning area, two layers of pebbles, bigger and fine one, and fine sand on top, like a drawer that does not pools out but opens to be easily discharged, with strong metal grill in the bottom to hold almost a foot thick layer. It should be acting like a thermal mass to keep the area warm during the night and to filter soot from smoke. Top compartment would be made out of wood with chimney inside and in the rear, mash cowered controllable openings on bottom and top for a humid air ventilation, and some light roof on top of course:)

I grew up with a family that built concrete bridges. Needless to say, we made alot of stuff made out of concrete. It looks like you have a fine start! My granddaddy's smokehouse had a poured concrete low wall with wood on top of it with a tin roof. He had a fine sand floor. I look forward to seeing the rest of the build. Thanks for sharing.

I just finished rebuilding my smokehouse. Looks like you are setting a great foundation. Can't wait to see how yours comes out. I went with Hardie planks since I burned my last one down. Where I come from originally, a lot if people run the fire inside. Well, you have to exercise a bit more caution doing that but it allows s to cook a little in it. I can also add an outside fire box it I decided to. Can't wait to see you finish. Not a whole lot of good smokehouse videos out there.

Three things on my to-do list: 1. Raise Pigs 2. Build Smokehouse 3. Smoke Pigs in Smokehouse We wanted to get pigs our very first year of homesteading, but the house build took all of our time. This video has inspired me to just do it this year! -- maybe next year on the smokehouse though.

Hey Danny, I build a similiar smokehouse as you built. Was wondering what temp you arwe actually able to get in the smoke chamber. Do you use charcoal for heat? I use charcoal however I cannot get the temp past 150F. Thanks!

If you have a pool of water coming off your concrete, you've got issues. The portland cement will absorb what it needs and any excess separates the bond of the aggregate from the paste and that's where your strength and durability come from. This concrete was either not mixed thoroughly, or it was flooded for workability. A small slab like this shouldn't be cheated on as it's the same workload as it would be with a lower slump.

We always built our smokehouse close to the hog pen...that way they could get used to the concept and commune with their dead kinfolk at the same time....lol.
