In this informative 5 minute video, you'll see, from start to finish, how Seven Six Drum Company builds a 6x14 purpleheart stave snare drum. Starting witrh raw wood, then build the shell, finish it, and drill for hardware. Note that in this video, I did not film the cutting of the snare beds…that occurs just before drilling and assembly.

Gorgeous drum, and that jig is brilliant! I really like those lugs. There’s a snare at a local shop that has those, and it seems like they should let the shell vibrate a bit more. I’ve been thinking of building a snare around a set of them. Cheers!

These lugs are double ended single point lugs. As you can see in the final photos, tension rods enter the lug at both ends (double ended) and the lug contacts the shell at the lower nodal point (single point of contact). If you look at my website at 76drums.com, you will see that I use multiple types of lugs, some have a single point of contact, some have dual points of contact, and some have separate dual point contact lugs for the top and dual point contact lugs for the bottom.

Is milling the inside of the shell necessary, i think it looks really cool
@SevenSixDrumCompany

I’ve considered leaving it unmilled. I think the issue would be sound quality. Sound waves bouncing off of flat surfaces would sound different from sound waves bouncing off of a curved surface. Worth looking into, though

There certainly are wide and deep snare beds, I just don’t show that very exciting snare bed cutting process in the video. As for polyester/oil/polyurethane, etc, that’s totally personal preference. Not sure what you’re seeing with bearing edges…these are offset 45 degree edges

@SevenSixDrumCompany
@SevenSixDrumCompany Год назад
No, sir. I use 2k polyester clear coat, which is the same substance that most of the large drum corporations use. Though it is much more difficult to work with than water or oil-based polyurethane and more difficult to clean up, It offers a high gloss and very effective durable protection against the elements and abuse. Viva la 70s!!!

Everything was going great till you installed those hideous black hoops. Also the interior show should have been clear-coated.
@SevenSixDrumCompany
@SevenSixDrumCompany 9 месяцев назад
We specialize in hideous hoops. Also, clear coating the interior is not a common practice. It causes sound waves inside the drum to bounce around too much, making it more difficult to control overtones
