Timber makes for a bad retaining wall, unless you like having to replace it every 5-10 years. Very very poor choice for hipster morons that are only interested in ascetics. Also a play area? Yeah have you never gotten a splinter before? All around a completely ill thought out project.
@Pure_KodiakWILD_Power
@Pure_KodiakWILD_Power 8 лет назад
there is a reason people use wood for building; because it's affordable, it's strong & when it's treated & installed properly, it lasts. i've seen a wall that held as much earth as this one, made of smaller lumber, done by the homeowners ( so no stone aggregate, fabric, tie in beam, etc ) last for 20+ years. so there goes that expert critique. thanks for sharing, though.
@jamespearson7292

One thing I would do, perhaps I missed it. I would drill and drive half inch rebar at the tee of the dead man into the undisturbed soil. The dead man will be secured into the soil and will not drift. This is especially important in clay soils as clay soils can build up tremendous water pressure.

Does anyone know what product is being used for the wood preservative in this video? I checked my local home improvement store but couldn't find anything labelled as such. I am rebuilding a timber retaining wall that has probably lasted for 20 years or so, perhaps longer. The house is 38 years old but I have only owned it for 14 years. As I remove the old timbers, the ends are completely rotted, so I can see the value of doing the preservative step on the ends which are cut.

Good video, but it's unclear what you do with the edge of the filter fabric after you cover the drain stone/pipe with it. Do you wrap it and pin it under the top timber? It looks like the drain channel, full of stone and pipe, is about 12" wide. For that exposed 12", what do you put on the top surface, i.e., on top of the filter fabric? More stone? Or perhaps a run of sod or AstroTurf?
@hotdogjoe4039
@hotdogjoe4039 2 года назад
You backfill it with excess dirt. You fold the filter fabric over each other and cover it with the dirt. The water will not soak and stay in the dirt, which adds pressure to the wall. Instead, it will find the path of least resistance and pass through the fabric into the pipe. Typical French drain

UC3 and UC4 treated lumber can be used for exterior construction projects. UC3 lumber is divided in two subgroups: UC3A, UC3B. UC3A is used for exterior, above ground jobs and is coated. UC3B, on the other hand, may receive a further finishing coat. UC4 lumber is reserved for exterior projects where the wood may be in contact with freshwater. There are three subgroups of UC4 lumber: UC4A, UC4B and UC4C. UC4A is used for areas with a low risk of getting in contact with freshwater, UC4B is reserved for severe environments with a high risk of damage from water and UC4C is for important structural components located in severe environments.

It's like the < $100 walkie talkies that claim you can communicate over 20 miles. That's some optimum range with optimum conditions. I imagine claiming that roofing material or pressure treated lumber to last for 40 years has some similar optimum conditions.

Would railroad ties work better than those timbers?
@HaploBartow
@HaploBartow 3 года назад
They would probably last a bit longer, but railroad ties are soaked in creosote, which is toxic to humans and plant/animal life, and also banned in residential use these days in most places (including the US).

@@HaploBartow strange that they still sell them in the US though...
