Cody, I am so glad you showed where you just had to stop and look at things. I was in a building construction class and a student made a comment that really stuck with me. Older buildings were built and new building are engineered. Great job building a treehouse.

As you asked in video number 7 of the Tree House build, I LOVE all of the extra content like showing how to use a die to cut more threads on a bolt. So much of the extra content can be used not only in building a tree house but other projects as well. I don't know how much you had to pay for that SK large ratchet and socket set, but what a great find! I don't know if its the sound on the video but that is one of the best sounding ratchets I've ever heard!!!

I remember my father and grandfather building a tree house for me when I was a child. Keep getting Jack involved even if its just helping carrying things or holding things in place while you measure. One of the fondest memories of my youth was helping two of the men I looked up to so much. I felt really proud of the end result because I had some ownership of it.

I really identify with you at the end there where you are going over things in your mind. I do that when I am working on projects: Stop and consider all the steps, where am I in the process, what is the next step, what are the next 5 steps, are we on track? Measure twice and cut once!

Looks to be coming along quite nice! Great job with those brackets and angles. Very creative.

First of all I would like to say that you're taking on a great challenge. And these are just thoughts of a casual observer. By mounting the stringers all to the one side of the tree allows them to move but you have built them very tight to the tree and with the third leg coming up from the base of the tree when you put your flooring on its going to put longitudinal stress on your flooring system. The time for change might be now where you have a chance to build longer brackets and put the stringers maybe 3 or 4 inches away from the tree to allow for movement. This is all coming from an arm chair quarterback that's thinking about building some elaborate trees stands this summer. Keep up the good work......

ah ! the old putting your plumb bob in a bucket of water to keep it from blowing around trick--- I like it !!! I think you should weld up a moveable bracket for that knee brace and bolt it together,as the tree grows you wont have the stresses on that mortised knee beam. just my .02

Nice you are really doing a good job. How is the weather right know out there it looks nice we out in the east coast happen to have almost 100 inches of snow and right know it 16 degrees. Does it get really really cold out there like it does here

What a great dad you are. Mmmmm is that for you or him. Lmao. i guess were all kids at heart, never out grow stuff like that. It's coming along nicely.

I would consider lapping and thru bolting that knee brace. It would give you better protection in the case of uplifting wind. When your done, I would also consider installing a simple lightning rod...in case kids are in it when perhaps they shouldn't be. That would make an interesting topic for another video...as well.

If it's windy and it's making your plumb bob sway, try suspending the weight of your plumb bob in a bucket of water if possible. Helps cut down the sway.

Figuring angles and intersections was something I loved watching my grandfather do. He talked a lot with his hands showing butts and dado joints, intersections and angles. Then he would take his pencil and draw out the idea on a scrap piece of lumber or plywood. He was hard to understand sometimes when he talked fast with his hands, I was only 5-6 years old. I would make him laugh if I tried talking with my hands like he was doing. Sometimes though it was the demon alcohol he drank doing the talking, until he got sober when I was 7 yrs old.

I usually scrape the threads of the lag bolt across a bar of soap to ease the lag bolt threading into the wood.

you are doing a heck of job on that tree house it is beautiful so far.

I liked watching you work through your knee brace dilemma. Could you have used a plumb bob from the joist to the knee brace bracket to get your opposite and adjacent side lengths and used those to get your hypotenuse for the brace? Just something that came to mind if you ever find yourself in that situation again. Keep up the awesome content!

The treehouse videos are the best !

As far as finding your angle and setting your bracket, you could measure down the string the same distance as your horizontal distance form the stringline along the beam to the joint. As long as those two distances are the same, you have a 45 degree angle. I am a contractor and do almost all my projects alone so I have to come up with creative solutions for setting heavy materials with the help of mechanical advantage. Nice work.

I just had a thought watching this video, I seem to recall from way back that I heard one could use a level on a long drill bit like you need to throughout this build but sliding a well fitting pipe over the bit and that way the level and the bit can be held all during the drill. Obviously pipe length would be important. As for the content; the care you show in creating this channel shows pride. I also believe that it is important that ALL skills required during a project are equally important. Don't underestimate the value of one vs. another. great work

Cody, it looks to be a very nicely constructed treehouse. Have you built-in the ability for the tree to continue growing/ and movement in the wind to not break up the structure?

Where is Jack? It's a tree house for him. Get him holding and watching and learning.

(Picture at 4:00...7:20 is a better shot) I would have used longer 4x6 joists and connected on the outside of that 3rd trunk of the tree with the last 4x6, it would make for a longer carriage and attach to the tree from the outside.

Don't forget the fireman's pole or the trap door entrance. All tree houses need these elements.

Ok ur a great carpenter but I already have a question for u concerning the tree. Will it not hurt the tree going in to it so far with ur bolts?

Will those brackets allow the tree to sway in the wind? I know tree house dreamers makes brackets so it can move in the wind.

On the 45 degree angled support couldn't a a strip of metal be welded to the middle strip and the base of the middle to create shape L shap from the side and a T shape from the top to help support the timber although im sure the bolt through the timber that connects the timber and support brace is strong enough to support the beam and the tree house. Also couldn't cody of marked both lines before disassembling the frame to notch the joint to then reassemble to mark the line and then again disassemble the frame notch yhe other half of the joint to then reassemble and build the floorboards of the treehouse. Just my thoughts I may be flawed in my thinking.

I bought a house a few years ago that has a tree house. What should I do when the tree has begun to grow into the lumber that the tree house is constructed with? I’m afraid of it hurting the tree. Can I cut the wood that is constricting the tree so the tree can grow properly? Should I leave the wood and bolts that has grown into the trees ?

How about use I-beams steel triangle tied to the three big trunks as your structure. Than use 2x8 as your floor support. I mean you have a very big tree that each trunk may definitely support 10-25 thousand pounds weight.

At 2:00 or so you were stating you were using a prusik knot, but what you showed was a Lark's Head.

Great video , working alone is sometimes the way I like it , but sometimes you just need a couple extra sets of hands. Where are you from ? By the way , subbed and liked.

Is there some connection between the weight of the house and size of the tree?

I'm curious if you are going to be taking that timber frame from your shop and mount it in this tree? Also - is Jack into it building this at all, or just not interested?

One thought is to use a more tree friendly attachment bolt... search for "Treehouse attachment bolt" in Wikipedia. This is not well known... some refer to it as a garnier bolt. Interesting what you find online!

So that is actually a larks head knot. A prusik knot is the very same concept but has more turns wrapped around the main line. This increases the amount of friction on the line you are tying on to. If you are actually ascending a rope you want to make sure you use the prusik. Both knots grip under tension and slide when the pressure is lifted but when it's your life or health on the line (pun intended) you wanna take all the precautions you can.

I've really enjoyed watching your videos. My only problem is that the more I watch, the more I want to move out into the country and play too. I was curious to know if you've ever come across Chenier's Practical Math Dictionary and Chenier's Practical Math Application Guide. There is a lot in there on figuring out angles. It might save you a couple steps in the future. I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination. I just came across these books and they've proven invaluable to me. When I watched you manhandling that knee brace I figured I'd mention them. Thank you for making so much of your life and experiences available.

Should have actually put the knee brace on the out side and just bolted it in place, a lot easier, and can be adjusted as the tree grows.

wranglerstar I am quite confused by your very early videos, the place where you are building your house looks nothing like the location of your current house, could you please explain. Am I just not seeing things clearly? Or did you switch locations?

I thought the bolt on the bracket was supposed to end up on the bottom of the beam when you swung it up there. The way it looks now all the weight will be on the narrow side of the beam.

What ever happened to the Solomon, Zachariah and Jack log cabin build?

The only I see one thing that you forgot to do. When you are using an auger bit next to your plumb line, you need to be sure to let it grab ahold of your "Staging Twine" and twist it around the bit. In turn, the twine will get tighter and tighter as you drill, then it will commence to exert tremendous down pressure on your 3x6 beams. This will proceed to pull them down on top of the auger bit, bending it so badly that you have to work an extra hour or two just getting it out of the hole. (Don't ask how I know this.)

Dude, come down to Tampa Fla. I have two large oak trees I want to put a tree houses in ,then have a gang plank to walk across to access each other .I have great ideas but work alone..
