How to build an Autonomous UAV for Long Range FPV & Reconnaissance - Silver Specter
I've spent about 2-4 days building this UAV in Flight-Ready state from scratch. In hours, it would be about 10-15h.
The aircraft flies incredible unlike it's slight tailheavy state but the stabilization & navigation modes take care of that and won't let me notice anything about it.
The Return to Home feature works flawless, as well as the Autonomous Missions I activated as well (hence the Air to Air Footage, by me, flying the Mavic Mini 2)
The aircraft hasn't been tested on it's flight time & efficiencies, but it's definitaly capable of +1h flight times (with my homemade 4S 9600mAh Li-Ion) as it's average cruise throttle is about 5A.
In it's upcoming flight video, extended & detailed information will follow!

Thank you for this super interesting sharing for this beautifull plane 😛the construction techniques used here are great: solid, cheap 🤑, materials easy to find 🤓. Personally I have no problems with the construction but I have more difficulty with the configuration of INAV 🤯If in your next video you could detail really very very precisely step by step the configuration for the poor NOOB that I am (and boomer at that!! 56 years old 😬) I will be extremely grateful to you 🤩. a big hello from France 😜

This is a very cool video. I've also been into foam planes for a long time. But now I live in a country where foam is a very expensive material. It’s cheaper for me to buy a ready-made plane from Aliexpress. I think that by covering the plane with tape you gained a lot of weight. 1. What is the weight of the aircraft without batteries. 2. How many batteries fit inside. 3. What is the load on the wing. 4. What is the cruise speed? 5. How far did you manage to fly on the battery (in other words, how many kilometers can the plane stay in the air on one battery). Thank you very much. The plane turned out to be very beautiful and flying. Pavel

Nice design, one suggestions for an improvement would be if you or anyone wanting to recreate the boom and mid wing design is to 3D print a rib shape with cutouts for spars on the profile and on the trailing edge a hole for the spars. I have printed such a part before and find it to be pretty big improvement in terms of having the booms solidly and rigidly attached to the wing without wobbling etc. Might even make them completely removable if you drill a small hole through the boom and attach them with a small clip through the entire wing in similar fashion to how RC car bodywork shells often are attached to the actual RC car.

Nice. Just observing... For a free flight model airplane, this design and most of the others you showed look very short-coupled longitudinally. That is, the tail boom looks short. This may mean the stabilization needs to work hard for pitch stability. The drone footage seems to confirm this (though of course there's no way to know wind conditions in those). Same for small dihedral and roll stability. A good free flight design with longer coupling and dihedral does an amazing job of flying steadily through weather on its own.
@thirtythreeeyes8624
@thirtythreeeyes8624 3 месяца назад
It's a tradeoff stability vs maneuverability. Short coupled planes are funner to fly and handle better at speed generally. For gliders and super efficient slow self stable planes ya pretty much the longer the boom, smaller the tail surface and higher the aspect ratio the better.

Awesome build. I'm trying the taping method for 5mm EPS but having an issue with the board curving a bit every time I'm adding a new tapes strip. Anything I can do better? Also, as a beginner would I get more chances of achieving lift if I tilt the wings a few degrees up? I'm not sure my result aerofoil is curved enough Thanks.
@coreytroxler8776
@coreytroxler8776 2 месяца назад
Yes, if you tilt them up a little you can get a little more lift, but you will also be pushing through the air more instead of cutting, this can result in an earlier stall speed of the aircraft, it takes a little tuning to make it work

I think 3d printing is best for things like mounts, control horns and other small and intricate parts that need to be strong, once you start printing big stuff that needs to be light it gets brittle and heavy so you're better with foam for durability and weight. 3d printed ribs with foam covering is an interesting concept to me though.

@@AeroStuffFPV If you forget for a while about structural stuff, then you are practically limited to the Power/Weight ratio. Obv, the more load on wings the higher the stall speed therefore it has to fly faster to be airborne. And of course, pitch speed of prop. I am sure now your P/W is at least 1.0+ Double the weight and you got hard time to launch it - toss it above stall speed. There is a nice calculator online (eCalc), slightly limited in free version but can provide some general idea how a plane will perform.

@thirtythreeeyes8624
@thirtythreeeyes8624 3 месяца назад
The first hobby flight controller was called multiwii, (technically triflight i believe) it ran on an arduino and a wii motion plus gyro board. Now days that's really outdated but, it's totally possible. If you want to build your own you'd be much better off running inav on a f411 blackpill or similar board though and really you can get fc's that'll run inav for about the same price as a mcu and gyro board and you'll want all the extra stuff on an fc like osd, voltage regulators, etc.

It wouldn't be of much interest and would also considerably increase the weight. The type of construction used here is sufficiently strong without the need for additional structural reinforcements. We must never forget that weight is the ultimate enemy for an RC plane.......
@thirtythreeeyes8624
@thirtythreeeyes8624 3 месяца назад
@@sylvainponchelet4188Not entirely true, proper fiberglassing can produce stiffer parts at less weight due to its tensile strength. Just look at competition gliders. I like to reinforce wing joints, motor mounts etc. with carbon fiber and it makes for insanely strong light weight builds.
