First time I’ve heard a rat on an instrument other than guitar. I love it!

If you are ordering the LM308 on ebay, be prepared for fake chips (happens alot). Truth is you dont need the LM308, an OP07 (still in production) sounds just as good. Have fun everybody :D
@LeoMakes

True. I got it from a reputable source but--honestly--I compared my "vintage" chip to a few modern options off camera while researching this video and they all sounded good to me. Maybe a guitar aficionado could pick out the real one, but they all sounded great.

How do you recognize a fake?
@brakfx
@brakfx 4 года назад
@@uelude In my experience, atleast when it comes to transistors, op-amps or cmos based chips, they're either; very noisy, a completely different part with a similar functions or they simply just don't work. I've gotten really good fakes tho, but they seem to be a bit more fragile. Cheap production etc. Ebay is a gamble, but sometimes you hit the jackpot :P Resistors, leds and caps are safe to buy tho!

I've had a DT for a while now, but had completely disregarded the 'separate channels' panning trick - wow! It can make a great difference and is certainly worth sacrificing a stereo field for in some contexts. My kick really stands out now! Thanks for the video. And I'm going to try the workaround you explain in the following video with a cheap Joyo OD pedal for my burgeoning Eurocrack set up! Win!

Wow! What? I could build a Rat instead of just buying one? Wow if I manage to make one myself it will mean so much more than if I bought one! Although there’s absolutely nothing wrong with buying one. Thank You very much for the info!

Please make more videos like these, fun and educational to watch, keep up the good work :)

If those potentiometers are just controlling reference voltages in the ICs with very high impedence, you can probably replace them with PWMed outputs with low pass filters as voltage references, you might be able to create various duty cycles from audio files, so that you could modulate your RAT pot positions with a "music" track. Alternatively, you could quickly swap flavors with a switch bank that selects from specific resistor values that match resistance values taken from the pots on this pedal.

But that's how it's always been done! Even in a DAW or plugins with a "distortion" or "grit" parameter; it's the same thing emulated in a digital environment.

The other great thing for drum machines is the MAESTRO RING MODULATOR, WITH CV INPUT. This was Tom Oberheim's actual RING MODULATOR invention/design for his college thesis. "A ring modulator has two inputs-one program, and one carrier with one output. The modulated product of the two input signals are sidebands made up of the sum and difference frequencies, just as in amplitude modulation."

Tube screamers are also nice even by themselves with synths. You can run the TS to the rat and tighten the sound up in the mid range

Hey man, enjoying the content, thanks. I bought this pcb recently and noticed you don't seem to have added the LED's (D1 and D2) to this board. are they not needed? I figured the would serve as clipping diodes, but since you don't have them, I'm less convinced... so... needed or no? :)

Thanks for subscribing! I compared my DIY to the vintage one off camera and they seemed very close in sound. Not totally identical, but close. I've heard the components in the RAT have changed over the years, so that might be why it sounds different from what you're used to. It would be an interesting thing to research.

Most ''LM308's" on Ebay are counterfeit. Your best bet is to get a more common chip that get as close to an actual LM308, such as the IC ua308HC metal can chip.

Lol, I'd do the exact opposite, use it on the kick and instead of a lowpass filter, I'd have a highpass filter to take out that horrible bass, it clogs up the distortion and makes it inaudible
@erikfeldmann5127
@erikfeldmann5127 5 лет назад
That's a really good idea. I think a highpass filter could help a distorted guitar shine above a bassist in a mix/live situation in my opinion.

Hi ! I might be the biggest fattest noob to ever watch a video like this, so I have not understood a whole lot of what's happening, but I'll do my research on what does what, because I really want to make a pedal like this. I have one question though, so that I can start understanding how this thing works ; what else do you need a part from diodes, a switch, a button, something to give it power, the input/output "things", the pcb, and potentiometers (100k-150k from what I've understood ?) ? I don't know the terminology sorry lol I'm doing my best, I'm not even english, I'm french
@LeoMakes
@LeoMakes 4 года назад
Hi Benjamin. I'm afraid I can't give specific advice to everyone as that would take up too much time, however, I did make two videos that might be really helpful for you: How to DIY Properly (a story of preparation) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Kz7R0pIp3PU.html How do Solder Through Hole Parts ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pUCHd3NYS9Q.html Beyond that, I would strongly recommend starting with a "full kit" if you're new so that you can have everything you need in one place. This saves you from having to find the individual components which can be a bit of work. Do a full kit or two and work your way up to more "from scratch" projects. Thanks for watching and good luck!

What is the point of a project like this? It costs more than a high quality clone and theres really nothing to learn by soldering numbered parts to a PCB. It would be nice to see more breadboard builds and or generic effects kits, with an assortment of components meant for breadboarding.

@@onkelberra3166 Try here, they are about $3 a piece: elektronik-lavpris.dk/p125453/lm308n-operational-amplifiers-dip-8/ And there a lots of other places you can find them. They are cheap standard opamps that you can find everywhere. Or use an eqvivalent - it doesn´t matter much, TL071 / TL081 are probably better, and much easier to source. All the hype about special opamps - most of them sounds the same. LM308 is just a shitty old opamp, maybe even a LM741 would work fine, but it would probably be a bit noisy. I would try a TL071. Those were the ones used by Marshall in their solid state circuitry, for at good reason. They are FET based, and distort nicely.
