A note on the tie rods. There really hasn't been many broken tie rods on stock geometry suspension. When they do break on stock suspension it's generally due to front locker use and the front end being bound up. With that said upgrading the tie rods to something stronger moves the weak point to your rack. A way more expensive and much much harder trail side fix.
There is a brace made for the rack to internally brace the inner socket(inside the bellows) and it seems to work well. Rough country makes forged tie rods too.
It’s cheaper to replace tie rods than the steering rack. If you want a steering rack solution 74 Welds billet rack is the ultimate solution for this problem. Imo, ford designed the tie rod to be the weak point for a reason.
High quality production. Really appreciate the pace and the clarity of attributes on each component you feature. Clean, neat and yet not just marketing but actual user opinion. This is your calling
Orlandos 4 door with all the extra weight added by roof rack tent and all the other 50 accessories. have you checked how much the bronco weighs? cause I am pretty sure you are a couple hundred pounds over the GVWR of the bronco.
I was about to say, the roof top tent weighs around 90lbs, but once you add a human or two in there, and you’re talking well north of 400lbs on a hardtop rated for 110lbs?
Okay that's all fine and good, but where did you get that shirt brother. Also, you should have skipped RTR. They're overpriced as per usual with RTR products and the Hammer Built spare tire modular system is a better bang for your buck, which allows for additional mounting points for things like radio Atenas, chase lights, and fuel/water storage. All of that and you don't sacrifice any quality. And thanks for all of this detail oriented information. I am now going to be broke thanks to you!
I really like that both of these builds don’t mess with the look of the Bronco, they’re upgrades that work into the spirit of the vehicle too. I have a heritage edition being built this spring so I don’t want to mess with the look, will definitely be doing some of these though
i have has 12 jeeps ALL of them including hemi and even super custom 2 door LS 2018 2 door. I must say i just picked up a bronco raptor last week. The truth is it is the best stock 4x4 i have ever bought or drove. PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for this video! I just got my 22 Bronco Badlands Sasquatch 4door and going to start planning for future mods in the coming years. This video provides some great options and suggestions for new Bronco owners.
From a side profile, it is more understanding. The Bronco windshield has a nice spherical shape which once you get a flat piece of aluminum, it adds that bow. We wanted to offer more function on this to decrease wind noise. We achieved the decreased wind noise and better overall aero dynamics for a Bronco with a roof rack addition. Hope this helps understanding why it is there.
Your videos inspire me to spend lots of money. My TRMR rack is due to be delivered tomorrow. I was also able to snag a Superlite on the last drop. What kind of awning do you recommend? I was checking out some 270 degree awnings and they are crazy expensive. My goal is to be able to set up, and break down camp as quick & easy as possible.
Love it! Hard to find Bronco Overlanding rigs. Just subscribed. I love my Gobi Rack but if I didn’t I’d have this rack too! I’m having difficulty figuring out how to mount accessories to my on it with my RTT & awning up there like my Waterport and recovery boards and a shower tent and shovel/axe would be nice. I really don’t want to block the rear window or back up camera.
If anyone is looking for a lightweight rooftop tent similar to the GFC one, Inspired Overland makes an ultralight rtt that weighs 76 lbs (with mattress). Highly recommend.
350 static? Yikes… 100lb tent, 200lb dude, 130lb wife… plus rack weight… way over. Forget adding a larger tent and 2 kids. Guess I need to look at a rack that mounts to a bumper? Any suggestions for carrying/sleeping more weight?
Hey Justin ! Great video and awesome builds. I have a Badlands Sasquatch package. I love the roof rack, but I have soft top. Would the one you used on these builds work with my Soft top ? Any solid recommendations? Appreciate it 🙏 💯 🙌
What is the story on the metal shelf in the cargo area? I have a homemade version there now for split level loading but like the looks of the metal contraption you have there
Love this video! I've watched it over a hundred times as I'm building my Bronco camping/fly fishing rig. Quick question. To mount the WaterPort to the PackRax, did you have to drill 4 new holes into the PackRax to mount this? I can't seem to find 4 holes that line up for the WaterPort mount. Also, assuming you had to drill 4 new holes, if you remember what sized metal drill bit you used, that would be insanely helpful. Thanks in advance and keep up the great work!
@@JustinBMcBride Awesome! I see what you mean. I bolted the top plate to the packrax and I see why you only drilled two holes for the bottom holes. Thanks for the tip!
I've been looking to get a Bronco and I'm absolutely in love with this build. I'm very new, so please be gentle with me lol.... but there are several different trims of the Bronco. I definitely want to get a 4-door. I'm not sure if Justin mentioned it in this video or the original video with Orlando in it, but what trim did he start out with? Is there a trim that that is more "preferred" for overlanding? TIA
Does the RTR tire carrier have provisions for the arb compressor? I have an arb under my factory rack and just bought that mount. If it fit the RTR it would be more attractive. If not, ill go to buying a hitch mounted platform for my storage. I dont need a bike rack so its an option for me still. We like to camp while wheelin and sometimes my wife will follow me in her vehicle to bring more camping stuff. I prefer to stay with a single vehicle. Im coming from a 2018 Raptor and im used to tons of space, now....none.
Love the looks and just "ordered" a BL. Hopefully it gets built, but I don't understand why Ford says 2.7L can't take ANY roof rack weight. Went with 2.3L to be safe.
Dude! I see bigfoot! That's the best shirt i ever bought at the North Face store. I wish they had more fun stuff like that now,. Just bought a Trailgater with your link too. Hopefully you get some points. It looks awesome
Hey @JustinBMcbride, quick question: I’m trying to do a battery bank setup similar to yours, but would like it to be tied in to the Bronco’s battery to help power some of the heavier loads I’d like to run on the aux switches (winch, compressor, lights, etc.)… What are your recommendations? I’d also like to put a solar panel on the roof rack and have it help charge that battery bank, if possible. I’m not trying to power anything that needs power when the vehicle is not running.
It does add some, but I’m still the type to follow the manufacture’s recommendations. I did have a 160lb tent up there from 4x4 Colorado for a few days and the TrailRax held up to it. I can’t speak to the long-term of that kind of weight on the hard top though.
Hey @JustinBMcBride, great job once again. Awesome build. I love RTR (just ordered their Project X light kit)... but, their tailgate reinforcement is a bit out of my budget at the moment. Do you think I can get by with the RC reinforcement like you did? Or, am I asking for tailgate issues when loaded up with the AAL Spare Tire Platform, roam box, and a standard sasquatch 35 spare? Realizing it is not your first choice, have you had any problems?
When at Johnson valley, I noticed that my door had slipped a little under the weight with the RC mount. I had to pull everything off and readjust it all. After that I was very careful on any whoops or washboards not to go too quick and to pick smoother lines to prevent any issues.
@ 5:35 host mentions that the tent and an air mattress is short of the roof’s max capacity. If my math is right, we’re looking at about 10 lbs to spare. However, isn’t anyone supposed to go up there and sleep in it? I’m 6’ 2” and over 200lbs, soooo?
In the Major Tom I noticed you switched from a Dometic 45 to a 55 somewhere along the way, but then put a 45 in Orlando’s. Any specific reason for that? I’m trying to decide between the two. I would prefer the 45, but unsure if there is enough clearance for the lid to be able to stay open by itself. The 55 solves that but is a little overkill for me. You are one of the few I know of that has tried out both in a Bronco so any advice is appreciated.
The main reason for the 55 in the two door is the lid opening. The rear speaker on the 2 door sits right above the fridge and prevents it from opening fully without sliding out. Sometimes, when just needing to grab something quick, it is more convenient to have the side open of the 55.
Great video Justin - I’m curious if you have a more detailed video of the aux battery system install available? I’m working on installing the same system right now and am trying to figure out where to tap into for the engine on/off signal.
Thanks! I figured you might have received a lot of questions on this one. Looking forward to the video. I almost have everything installed myself…just trying to figure out which fuse to tap into for that blue wire on the Redarc BCBC 1225.
@@JustinBMcBride Did you ever film the battery install? I was going to try the same system, but am having trouble figuring out all the nuances of running the batteries in parallel, where I need fuses, etc.
I just added Eibach coil overs to my rear suspension set up and addressed the sag, plus it made the handling much better. Peak Suspension recommended them and I’m super glad I went that route!
For your 2 door, do you have a floor plate where the back seats used to be? I’m looking to do rear seat delete and then have slide out fridge or camp kitchen but don’t see options for a 2 door. Thank you for your vids. They’re AWESOME !!
I made the wooden floor post to pair with the American Adventure Labs one. The owner of AAL doesn’t believe me when I tell him that he needs a full 2-door seat delete. So I had to get creative.
@@JustinBMcBride Thanks much!! I actually emailed them, as well, last week to ask if they could put this on their "upcoming" list - maybe between your clout and my 3 followers (LMAOOO), they just might do it!?! :)
Hey, if you’re the type to DIY something and have a laser cutter, break press, hydraulic press for PEM-hardware, and a powder coat booth, go right ahead. Not to mention having access to the 3D scans of the hard top to design the rack - you already know this since you’re the expert, but Ford doesn’t share that so you’re going to either have to hire a 3D scanner for about $5k for the day, or wait, you are the expert, what am I saying? You already own the $50k 3D scanner. Get after it. I look forward to seeing yours. But hey - after you invest all that time and money into making your roof rack, remember that you can’t sell it to recoup costs because TrailRax holds a patent. All the best on your journey to save a few hundred bucks.
@@JustinBMcBride Dude, relax. I just enjoy building things myself, regardless of the cost. I’m sure it’s a fantastic rack, but also relatively simple in design, which makes it an ideal DIY project. I’m a hobbyist, I don’t mass produce off-road products, and I never claimed to be an “expert”. I don’t need a $50k scanner or hydraulic press. You can cut metal without a plasma cutter, paint without power coat, and have aluminum extrusions delivered to your doorstep… I just stumbled upon your channel, enjoyed the first two videos I watched, and was about to start the third when you replied. I think I’m good now✌🏼. Enjoy the trails.
Terrific explainer, thank you! I'm looking to get either Bronco or Jeep for daily driver + camper but will not do "overloading" per se. I'll be on forest service roads, doing boon docking etc but have no desire to crawl over rocks etc. Not a DIY guy, I'm wondering who I can go to in order to build out the interior (and some exterior stuff) to be able to live in it for months at a time. Any ideas? I'm in LA area, too. Thanks.
He seems to be into electrical add-ons. In addition to that, however, I'm looking for folks who create beds, galleys, power systems, hygiene and water systems. Any ideas there? thank you! @@JustinBMcBride
It mounts to weird spots and is made of steel so it will rust, not to mention the difficult history Gobi has of delivering roof racks in a timely manner. The TrailRax is still best.
I’m restricted by my Ford contract on adding a winch and we have opted so far not to add one to Orlando’s Bronco until he has more off-road experience.
