Some kind of mortar or concrete mix with fine aggregate could work as well.
@timcoulson7340
@timcoulson7340 Год назад
These look amazing! I'd like to know why you chose to use plywood for the underlying structure instead of foam-board. It looks like you used 1/4" plywood which is pretty light, but wouldn't all foam-board be significantly lighter? And why do you use Flexbond mortar rather than a paint like DryLok masonry water proofing paint? Thank you and keep up the great work!
@AndrewLong
@AndrewLong Год назад
Thank you! I chose to use plywood for a few reasons: It’s a lot stronger than foam so will less likely get a hole kicked in it. It’s also a lot easier to attach to the wooden framing. The foam has also gotten pretty expensive recently. I use the flexbond for a hard coat and to give it a textured look. Then I’ll paint it.
@TheKsmaltbie
@TheKsmaltbie Год назад
Hey Andrew, we are in the process of building these. Can you tell me more about the paint? Looking to see if we can buy in smaller batches (the brown, green, and turquoise). Are you able to find them in smaller containers? If so, where? All flat? Thanks so much! Love your explanation, and the columns are amazing!
@AndrewLong

@AndrewLong
@AndrewLong 2 года назад
It is honestly up to you how early you want to set up and how much time you think you will need to get it set up. For us, beginning of October is when we start putting stuff out but we don’t put everything out right away because we don’t want it to become damaged. We run our event three nights during Halloween weekend so I don’t like having everything show ready until two or three days before the event. But if you’re fine with having stuff out in the weather for a month then go for it!

Haha thank you! I don’t have a video on it, but it was made from the 1/2” foam insulation board. I used the dremel with a drill bit to cut out the letters and glued them onto the foam backing piece. Questions - for the mixture you are doing with the Flexbond how long does it take to dry? And how well does it adhere to the foam?
@AndrewLong
@AndrewLong Год назад
The mixture takes around an hour to fully dry but I try not to use a batch for more than 20 minutes at a time, so I did a few smaller batches for the column. It adheres great to the foam and will very rarely chip/break unless you purposely ram into it. I’ve only had problems with the pool noodles as neither paint or the flexbond likes adhering to it so I would definitely use another material like PVC or carved foam to get a rounded shape.

I admire your work, your cemetery columns are magnificent. I love Halloween but in France it is so difficult to find products for finishing. I have a question, which product do you use to glue your insulation boards and your pool noodles together? I am in the process of making but cemetery columns but I glue with wood glue, I'm afraid that it will come off over time. And for the painting, is it only acrylic? Thanks again for these 2 videos.
@AndrewLong
@AndrewLong 2 года назад
Thank you very much! For the glue I use a variety including liquid nails, great stuff spray foam, and hot glue (the liquid nails holds very well and the spray foam does as well but it expands so be careful with that). The paint I use is exterior water based latex paint (basically normal house paint). If you want to improve the durability of your columns as well it is great to hard coat them, I used flex bond mortar for these columns. Good luck building!

@@AndrewLong tell you what. Give ME some time stamps of you giving a materials list, or you explaining/demonstrating how to make what you are filming, or you building the piece in front of the camera to "show" how to do it, or supplying complete dimensions of the build which is what a tutorial means, and I will take down my comment. And I wasn't asking for you to take down the video, but perhaps taking the word "tutorial" out of the title might make it less like click bait.

@@Raynestorm1968 lol oh dude. Do you need someone to print every single step out for you? This is one of the best videos out there. I managed to build both columns and gates without step by step instructions. Maybe this isn't the hobby for you, maybe you could just go buy what you want...might be easier on your ego

@@seanamos9441 I give credit where credit is due. And no credit is due here. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. And by the way...the video is called "how to build"....so it by right should be intended for people who do not know how to do it.... People who already have the general skills, and knowledge, probably wouldn't need to watch tutorials in the first place.
