Surely the bottom rail should be the same thickness as the middle rail. That way the t&g covers the bottom rail and sheds water.

You are a good builder... that's quite the DIY project! I design outdoor woodwork... sealing those joints was a solid move. Nice work.
@messenger8279
@messenger8279 Год назад
I have been a joiner for 35 years.Heres a tip. Mark out the joints. Put in an extra line for you rebate depth where the joints meet. Now cut the rebates. You will now see the shoulders of the joint are needing to be staggered to allow for those rebates. It will save messing around doing the stopped rebate. It will also prevent end grain in that rebate which will cause the gates to swell and eventually rot.

Lovely gate, and method of construction is great if just doing the odd one now and again, or for the DIY'er, if however someone plans on making a lot of these, or doors, then a Festool Domino machine would be a good investment (the larger of the sizes as it cuts for 12mm and 14mm dominos) it costs around a grand, which is a lot of money I know, but the amount of time it saves will repay your investment pretty quickly. I should point out I'm not associated with Festool in anyway, just a big fan of their Domino machines.

Does the varying moisture content of the tongue & groove affect how tightly they are fixed together. Out another way, if the board is dry and tight against the next board, will it bow in winter when the gate is wet? Sorry for being thick!
@bernie129locksmith

This is the problem if theres no expansion for the t and g it will expand and bow - Gates bought from big manufacturers are made like this and no matter how well you seal them they usually expand and blow the joints - floating panels are the best

As an old school traditional carpenter and joiner my comments and observations would be. Haunch on top rail to prevent twisting. Use a sharpened 2H or 3H pencil for marking out rather than a fat carpenters pencil for better accuracy. Clamp 2 rails/ stiles together when using your circular saw to stabilise the base plate when cutting the rebates the same as when you routed the mortices. It is a preference thing but got to be quicker to pare those mortices square with a chisel rather than round off the tenon. A stopped rebate will hold water especially on the bottom rail. T and G the boards in the top rail, stiles and run over the bottom rail which should be the same width as the mid rail. Square the door up after glue up and assembly using a squaring rod on the diagonals not a framing square. Use star nails in the mortice and tenon joints rather than rely on glue alone. Put your nails in at an angle. Could use a longer nail this way. More hold as well. It does not look like you have much nail going into the gate. 25 mm nail what are the boards 19mm? Use a bare faced tenon for mid and bot rails. Tanalised timber (vac vac) will last two to three times longer than untreated European Redwood.

@@phil2544 well maybe it would just be fine like mine and the one made in the video will no doubt be years from now. Pressure treated wood likely holds more moisture initially so will probably warp when it starts drying out. Maybe that's a factor. Most log cabins aren't pressure treated either so you spend a bit of time on the prep. I painted mine with a wood preservative before a good coat of varnish too. It's pretty standard practice. Apply same logic to a gate I guess.
