Portable Power Box for Ice Fishing includes a dual USB Charger, Basic Cigarette lighter charger, a volt meter, posts to run my underwater camera, posts to run my otter ice house lights and 12 LED lights on switches to light up the night when loading up my gear after a day of ice fishing.
Other than the 5 amp breakers and the Ammo box from Harbor Freight (9.99 before a coupon) here are links to everything I bought on Amazon -- much much more than you really need so if you have any of this on hand you can save yourself some money -- or just order it all and be done.

I know I'm not an electrician -- some snugging up and cable management is being handled off camera :) Already thinking of some upgrades - what would you guys add?
@raysewell6650
@raysewell6650 5 лет назад
He should have reversed the switches so the main power was closest to the hinge. that would cut down on the clutter. Also as you said, tie the cables to the side of the box. It seems counter productive to turn off the house lights to pack up, but if he wants stuff falling out or left behind that is up to him.

Hi friend. Just a question about the banana plugs . Where you buy the female ones you have and where you get the Male plugs and how you attach those to the camera to work . Thank you

I made my box with everything under the lid. I tried to keep all the switches and battery to one side. This way I had half the box left over for storage. Cables, USB led lights, Small AC inverter, AirPump

I would spend a little more and get a good quality pure stranded copper wire instead of copper clad aluminum. Only a few dollars more and increases the safety of your wires considerably.
@CharlesCromer

Also, when using the manual crimpers, you should always double crimp the connections. One crimp, then the other slightly over from that.
@cid380

Looks awesome man, may want to do a little sodering of wires, just twist the ones you want together before you crimp them than just a little heat and solder and boom! Don't have to worry about ever having a loose connection! Sold build! Really impressed!

Jake, I ran the numbers for ONE 10 amp lead battery (@15 degrees F.) powering the unit, chargers, a Humminbird Ice Helix-7 G2, and allowed for partial use of a camera - you can expect to get about 4.3 hours of usage. NEED MORE POWER!!!!!!!! lolol

haha this is for inside 80 degree ice house and won't run my Marcum. Possibly a cell charge and running my otter lights after dark. I can always add another batter though. I can totally tell you are an engineer -- love it!

@JaggedToothTackle

So you can put in switches to turn on/off the various stations on the box so the whole box isnt always all on or all off. If I'm charging something I don't want the lights on all day
@bradmetcalf2814
@bradmetcalf2814 5 лет назад
Just spit balling here but I was thinking that if you used a LED strip light you would reduce it from 12 sets of wires to four. Only have to drill four small holes in box to get wires inside. Would make the inside much cleaner and reduce the amount of splices drastically. Nice job though.
@JaggedToothTackle
@JaggedToothTackle 5 лет назад
I never thought of strips, the only problem (maybe not) is mounting them and securing them where these LED's have a kind of socket mount. And honestly -- Once the battery was installed and secured there is no need to show the wiring mess anymore LOL

@@JaggedToothTackle They stick on with adhesive backing, some guys double up on that with some super glue. I think the reason your epoxy failed was lack of prep, plastic is a petroleum product and can be oily. A good scrub with acetone may have helped things??

@stevenkofoed1698
@stevenkofoed1698 2 года назад
This thing could start on fire because you have no short circuit protection for volt meter, USB ports, or the cigarette port because they are not fused. Better to remove the fuse block and just put in an inline fuse between the battery and the master switch. This way everything is protected. If you want to use the fuse block then run the positive wire from the battery to the master switch then to the fuse block then wire all your components through the fuse block.

Heat shrink over each crimp. no soldering needed. Built and sold many. I keep two under my back seat, take another two when we hit the back roads. Way more lights than I put on mine. Strip lighting or rope is my thing but if it works for you, knock um out bud. Apoxy not so good, try rivets. Looks good and it's easy. All in all good job.

@TheOregonOutlaw 5 лет назад
Damn it Jake! As an engineer you took away 99% of my Fun! I like to bust your chops - but this time, ya did a really good job! Couple things to think of when making an auxiliary power station is the layout. Typically the largest and easiest to find/get to switch is your Master - and should have its own indicator - I'd suggest a RED LED on the lid - it would allow you to SEE the top of the lid and being red it won't screw your night vision. The farthest opposite it (or conversely the next switch to it) 'could' well serve for the ends - end = end. Lastly - those cheap ass Chinese manufactures use like a minimum of copper coated ALUMINUM wire - if you flex it a few times...and.. opps - it breaks! Avoid that by running your wires in a plastic loom (like auto makers use to wrap runs of multiple wire) OR ELSE>... use "shrink wrap" (cheap as heck) from Harbor Freight. As to the battery itself there are MANY schools of thought - and some are terrific - but everyone's income and need are different - Sooooo....here's a few choices (not ALL I assure you) can be 2X 8-10 amp batteries WELL ANCHORED using 2 PAN HEAD Stainless Steel screws + 2 Lock Nuts for Each Battery. If this thing falls off a snow machine at even 25 mph .... you have a "chance" of survival. With "just hot glue" at temps below 60 degrees - you have a bowling ball weight bouncing against all your components - tsk tsk!! Now I've got 2 years on my remote power station, and have used 3 light weight CHEAP ten amps LiPo batteries wired in parallel for 30 amps total power. For my camera and locator it's always lasted a weekend. Now seeing your video I'm definitely adding a couple added power ports for phones etc - as I said - DAMN IMPRESSIVE buddy! Heck you keep this up and I might have to take you out for sturgeon on the Big River of the PNW. ~Tight Lines~

haha thanks man. No this was all kind of off the seat of my pants especially with the 12 LED lights. I wanted a lot of light.. didn't expect the LED lights to be sooo thin. I have a few more things to do with it before it's ready for the ice house but I have a little time yet.
