It still bothers me how they're using "growing population" as an argument for everything when most of the concrete examples they give are in countries with pretty much stagnated population numbers
@pf333
@pf333 3 года назад
They don't care about that. It's easier to implement changes, positive or negative ones, in a population that is already being totally controlled. No one adresses the obvious elephant in the room when it comes to pollution or energy consumption because the populations in those countries (China, India, Africa) are less controlable and less subjected to globalism and all its quirks and misguided policies. "You'll own nothing and you'll be happy". Klaus Schwab, the Great Reset.

The countries where populations have stabilized or are even declining tend to be the wealthiest countries with the highest consumption (read: waste) rates. The countries that rapidly rise in population are countries that are developing rapidly, seeing severe declines in death rates while children born per woman are still relatively high. These countries will soon see wealthier inhabitants on average and will join the consumption (read: waste) practices, unless the entire world massively shifts gears to circular economies instead of the current 'infinite-growth' (read: infinite-waste) ones. So there's definitely a good argument in stating growing world population as a driving force for today's and tomorrow's problems. Sustainability is the only answer.

I am not sure that evolve is the right word. The industry may need to devolve a tad. Energy efficient buildings seem to spread disease because of poor air quality. I just want to tell you something. It's true that in France all new buildings begin to be made of at least 50% of wood or other renewable ressources however it's just awful. For example a new school where i went and is just 3 years old is already in a miserable state, the building looks old /dirty and some wood piece are already starting to rot and i dont think it's good for a sustainable development. Because all these buildings will need to be refurbished or even destroyed in 10 or 15 years.

I’d like to see laws made that require material makers at least partially fund recycling of the materials they create. Say 1% of gross receipts taken to pay for cleaning up materials they create and sell. You think they’ll leave money on the table and fold up? No way! Watch how quickly the private market comes up with materials that are easy and cheap to recycle. The only reason they haven’t done it yet is because they don’t have to.

what is the vertical build limit of wood tough? Building efficiency isn't just about the building itself, but also in how it's used. if you save a lot of CO2 in building loads of 5/6 floor flats on the edge of town, but then all the inhabitants need to spend hours and hours in traffic jams to get anywhere you aren't helping anyone. we need to be able to build 150+ floors on the regular soon, just simply to keep peoples action radius to below the need for a vehicle.

‘These challenges absolutely have to be solved in the next 10 years’. Care to give some actual data that proves it has to be 10 years? Otherwise it’s a meaningless platitude. I’ll give a prediction. In 10 years we will have more electric cars on the road, maybe 20% of the stock, and oil nation states will be struggling due to lower prices. Everything else, including the construction materials we use, will essentially be the same as it is now. Government set targets won’t be hard targets and will be filled with waivers, extensions, and modifications. 10 years goes by very fast and the trend changes predicted by B1M move much slower than a period of 10 years.

I find automation in construction extremely fascinating especially 3-D printed concrete and other materials. I’ve been traveling too many projects where this technology is being implemented and it’s incredible to see how quickly the space is growing and improving even in a very short time frame. I’ve documented my travels to the projects on my RU-vid channel and also started a podcast “automated construction podcast” where I’ve interviewed founders of the start up companies aiming to revolutionize the construction industry. I am sure many of them will be successful. It’s been so fascinating learning about these companies that seem to be on an unstoppable path to change the world.

Someone explain to me why they want more wood. More wood does lead to more deforestation right?
@iamdave84
@iamdave84 3 года назад
No. This wood is from plantations. The trees are planted, they capture carbon as they grow, then are harvested (locking in that captured carbon). New trees are planted in place of the old ones, and the cycle continues.

If everyone builds from wood yes that’s horrible but of only a few places do it it’s ok but it’s not the way to go it’s a horrible idea

No you nob. Forestry is like farming. They just don't chop down trees. They plant new ones to grow as well.

Yes, but it reduces the use of carbon heavy materials, like concrete for example

The problem is that the worlds countries are on such a wide range in terms of development. As soon as countries like the UK France or America get carbon neutral, the time for industrializing will come for countries like Nigeria, India, etc and there’s no way those countries cut down on emissions while developing

This is so scary i was literally talking with a colleague a week ago about the sustainability measures needed in the construction industry and i argued that tighter controls need to be made, in that as part of the deconstruction of 1 building occurs, the construction of another must be underway using the recycled material from that deconstruction and so on....thereby not introducing new harmful environment impacted materials, but being able to swap out for specific top end recycled gear in the new build. This is possible and only requires a small mind shift and understanding from these behemoth construction companies.

Hempcrete is a renewable solution for replacing concrete in many applications
@joermnyc
@joermnyc 3 года назад
Concrete is also a problem as the water eroded sand (think beach sand) required in the mix is becoming scarce. Wind eroded sand like from a desert doesn’t work... the shape of the grains is wrong. Unless a replacement is found, or we can adapt concrete to use desert sand, we may have to start thinking of alternate materials for things like sidewalks, building foundations and core walls. It’s enough of a problem already that beach sand piracy is now a thing.
