That is so awesome! I wish I knew all this before I started many years ago. I didn't cardboard the area and just go with it. So now I am trying to fix the pathway. It is a slow process but I think it might be ready next year. And congrats to Jenna and Tom on their new house and gorgeous garden! It sure helps having a pro dad LOL

That's going to make a memory in their new home that will stay with them forever. I have great memories of my dad helping me put in a new flower bed. It lasted many years.

After three long days of doing this set up, you have answered every question I had in this video I watched it from beginning to end and I shared it to my cousin who is a newer gardener. I have raised beds already, but I spent way too much on-bagged soil. Gary, make sure to cut off the plastic tag that is around the fig tree. It is known to choke and grind into the tree as it gets bigger. You did such a nice job. It’s a beautiful yard and garden. I’m looking forward to seeing the progress. Are they going to have another compost bin for food scraps as well. Your daughter is beautiful. I wish them well and many years of happiness in their new home.

I have a question re cardboard for the path and smothering weeds/grass. I have used this method for about 4 years. Initially ALL the weeds/quack grass were killed. However now the rhizome quack grass is creeping back into my paths. The rhizomes of the quack grass has crept from outside the path where there were no cardboard put down and now into the broken down cardboard path. Is there another way to alleviate this problem? Short term, for me at least, the cardboard worked brilliant but now that the cardboard has decomposed the quack grass grows like crazy. Thanks for all you do Gary!

I’ve wondered about this subject for a few years now… If the bottom third is hardwood branches, chunks, sawdust, etc… many say it’s not good for the plants… What has me confused.. As you put 8”-12” of compost and better quality on top, plus your regular fertilizer regime, when it leaches down from rain and watering.. Wouldn’t that leach “tea” soak into the wood materials for later use and feed decomposition?

You mention that all fertilizers are essentially equally effective. The Plant-tone you are using is a 5-3-3. I'm wondering why you don't go with something like a 20-20-20 and get the same effect, using way less fertilizer? Wouldn't that be more cost-effective?

How long will they stay together and you're doing all this work. Remind me in 2 years.

Question. Why not use weed barrier to put down instead of cardboard

Where do you get that bag of fertilizer? My HD and Blue L sell them like they are gold.
