8:10 As a welder, if I were you, I'd pull out a test plate and fiddle around with puddle manipulation. Just run some straight practice beads down a 4 to 8" long 1/8" plate (or 3/16" if you're worried about burning through). Try holding your gun still untill you get a good size puddle then move the gun quick enough to the edge of your puddle to start building up the next puddle. Or you can weave your gun from side to side making sure to spend roughly the same amount of time on the edges as you are moving across the middle of the weave. That way you're not compromising the strength of your welds with those fish eyes; and most importantly, they still look good.

Thanks. The secret is it’s only clean on camera. But aside from that i make it a standard to keep the shop clean every night no matter what project I’m working on. Yeah all I can say is what work for me was just practice/seat time and having a rhythm in my head as I welded to me be consistent.
@jacob.woodward
@jacob.woodward 2 года назад
Great build, not to hate on you or anything but for something that’s gonna be taking abuse you don’t want to do tacks to get a dime look on your welds. You don’t get proper penetration or fusion with the base metals and it’s prone to breaking under stress. You wanna run a straight bead if you can’t get consistent dimes you want by weaving. with a little practice it’s not hard to get a weave down that will stack dimes. But again not trying to hate and it was a great watch!

Good job man, this looks great! How do you manage getting any DIY work done with two kids? It's almost impossible for me with two kids...

Great video, I like the 3d printed template. A quick question for any Aussies watching, is it true we cannot weld to the chassis but can drill and bolt or would we have to use existing holes?

I think bolting to existing holes should be strong enough or drilling and then bolting would work. There are many applications out there that do the bolt on. I just welded it for maximum strength but it’s not totally necessary.

I feel something like 2 plates one on each side of the rail with 4 holes and 4 bolts running through each should attach it nicely

Just a couple of things. First of all the sliders look good. Second, welding straight to the frame is a no no. It actually hurts the structual integrity of the frame. Third, you need to weld full beads instead of tack welding the whole thing. Cheers mate.

What thicknesses did you use for all the materials? I'm going to make my own rock sliders and I can't decide between 1/8" and 3/16"
@RathaSochenda

1/8 for tube and 3/16 for plate that welded to frame

When you weld on car frame,is it necessary to disconnect cables on car battery?

Hey Are you able to elaborate more on how you did your kick back angle at 20 without a reference plane
@RathaSochenda
@RathaSochenda 2 года назад
I laid the round tube flat then lifted it up while using a digital protractor and angle finder until I got to 20 deg.

It’s actually pretty easy. One way is to draw a sketch line. Dimension it 20 deg then do a and extruded surface. Now you can use that to surface to sketch on. Or draw your part then use the move rotate feature to turn the part 20 degrees. Hope that makes sense👍
