How To Build Stone Foundation for Log Cabin by Hand | 5.0 |One Man Traditional Log Cabin full series

My fifth video on the log cabin series.
*All stones came from our own forest. The poles were painted in layers of tar.
I have just graduated high school and want a big challenge in life. I decided that before I continue my studies I'm going to take a year off where I alone with only hand tools and raw power build my own traditional log cabin by hand.
This video shows how I built the stone foundation for the log cabin by hand. Next episode will show the splitting of a log for the first row in the log cabin build.
If you wish to follow me on this journey, from forest to off grid log cabin, then click the link to subscribe: ru-vid.com...

I am in awe of this video. You need to be congratulated, praised or cheered on that foundation. I'm just kind of at a loss for words. You have a dedicated fan in me and I won't miss any of your future videos. The memories that you are making now with this journey will become priceless in later years. What a blessing it is for you to be able to document it all on video. Great job on your filming and editing. Wishing you much success!!!

Thank you so much for your kind words Sue!! It really means the world to me that my work is so appreciated. This motivation also really makes the time documenting and editing the videos forth it! Thanks! Never thought I would have a dedicated fan when I started this. Future videos will start to get really interesting when the wood working with the axes start.

I’ve watched a lot of videos during this pandemic. I’ve witnessed great ideas about everything from canoe tripping to van life and off grid homesteading. This video earns a top spot for its simplicity, non verbal instruction, patience and attention to detail. I’m especially interested in this video because it mirrors how we did things 50 years ago. Unfortunately I did not have the patience to continue the lifestyle but appreciate someone from the current generation who appears to have it. Thanks and I look forward to following your progress. 👏🏼🙏🏼

@Andurian
@Andurian 4 года назад
@@philipshane768 Obviously the measuring was a rough-in only, and only needed to be accurate to within a few inches for the purpose of digging the footer locations. The fine-tuning was with the string/nails as every mason knows how to do... it's just a shame that process was largely edited out of the video (along with the leveling process)

Allow a note: When mixing concrete, mortar, plaster dry, mix the individual raw materials (cement, sand, lime, etc. DRY dry so that the mixture has the same color - then it is WELL mixed. Then only WATER. THIS is it much better mixed. plasters other than lime, sand and a little cement you can add the old crushed plaster, which you passed to the grain size of the sand (ratio as sand) is better prepared this mixture for plastering - plaster.

@tomkelly8827 4 года назад
I am in awe at how much hard hand work you are dong here. Beautiful work on this foundation! As a side not though, I have mixed a lot of concrete and I would advise that you move your bag of cement, water and mixing station to beside the gravel pile. You will save a lot of effort that way when you are mixing your concrete! The fact that you look so young is really inspiring!

That tractor reminds me of my dad's Ford Workmaster. I wanna say it's from 1960. I doubt this tractor is the same though but very similar build. My dad still has and uses it to this day I remember doing so much work with it in highschool around 2010. We were still using it even 50 years later. amazing. I'd love to do something like this, go out and build a cabin. I think my grandpa would be envious because he always lived the life of 18th century pioneer but idk if he ever built a cabin for himself.

@@ErikGrankvist - I have only very recently discovered your channel, I love what you are doing, I am actually studying for my own knowledge as I plan to do this very soon - I do have a question though (perhaps it will be answered in further videos), but when you finished the corner piles, and started to do the rock walls between the corner piles, were you not planning to use some for of binding agent like cement to firm up those connector walls, from what I saw you were just sort of lining the walls up with rock and stone, and lining the cracks with just gravel, is that all that is needed, or is there going to be more binding agents like concrete? Just curious, if that was part of the plan, to firm it up or were you just going to leave it with only the stones and gravel. My main curiosity is in that I wonder how stable long term this loose rock and gravel setup would be without cement to hold it all together, I wouldn't want to try this method if it's not long term stable :) Either way I love watching you work, it is fueling my education on my upcoming project.

I wouldnt have used the poles or cement for the corner blocks. Modern cement (portland) traps moisture and is brittle, anything inside including wood and metal (rebar) will rot / rust, expand and crack the cement. A lime (real lime mortar) mortared stone pillar IMO would have been a better option

Very nice job. It has been nice to watch you work. Do you think you are gonna need ventilation holes to the foundation? Or are the slots between the stones enough to make the air flow through free enough? What about a hole big enough for a man to fit there, to be able to check the condition of the wooden structure? I am asking out of curiosity, because in Finland(old buildings) we often have the "man fitting crawl hole" and also kind of ventilation holes, called "cat holes" even if the foundation is made from natural stone. Jättebra kanal!

I wonder what are those trapezoid-shaped short poles(I'm not sure how it's called correctly in English) intended for, I saw they supported those longer lower logs, but I don't understand what is the function of that? It can't be just a traditional design, I guess, there might be some reason for that. Thanks in advance 🙏 the project is awesome ❤️

do you measure your foundation so its all horizontal or so its the same height above the ground? id assume you need everything horizontal and varied heights based on ground contour so the cabin is flat... also why did you specifically choose to start making it over 2 big boulders? does it make the foundation stronger?
