Thank you so much Diana and William for this wonderful tutorial video. I certainly learnt a lot. Especially when you mentioned about adding water to tighten the canvas up if needed. I will definitely subscribe

I like your process and your tutorial. Overall, a great video. You might try matching the music volume to speaking volume. I kept having to increase volume when you were speaking and decrease it when the music played. Thanks!

Thanks ! I am thinking of making my own , considering what her to get , so far seems like table saw and miter saw be a good combo. I like how you made the notch that’s very slick for adding cross support.

@@ianistudio Hi lol hope you are doing well , believe it or not youtube just sent me notification that you responded to my comment ! LoL A year late lol I have purchased several tools , table saw , new miter saw , had an old one , a planer and jointer and just recent dado blade. Since the fall of 2020 , I don’t buy any canvases from stores , I build all my own , my biggest so far 6x8 feet , I think it saves a lot of money and I like building them too. As of yet I have not made my dream stretcher bars lol but they all work good , I can make them as I like and not have to buy what they have in stock for sale. Have a great day.

I’m an artiste from Quebec ,Canada. I know nothing about wood. I bought mysef a miter saw and a jobsite Dewalt table saw….. I’m 53 yrs old and bought myself a 8 ft piece roll of good cotton canvas…. I’ve bought myself all the wood to do my own stretcher bars ….. But instead of the table saw I used my router…… I’m a bit scared of my table saw…. I got all the security jigs…… I’m an artist….. Singer , composer for almost 15 years…. And painting with acrylic my emotions has been a blessing…. I’m sorry to share this with you but last night after hours of using a router with a 45 degree angle…… nothing worked out….. I. cried alone out of desperation because my purpose is to write songs, or create paintings…… but at the same equivalence of art are people who know would and can work with nature ….. I find you guys so much giving and wanted to share your art through stretcher bars up to and including you art lessons. Thank you for sharing … If we all could share….. Merci from Quebec, Canada.

Thank you for sharing. The method in the video is def for advanced wood workers. There are easier methods. Some people just miter cut the corners of 2" x 2" piece of wood, then attach 1/4" round trim to the top to elevate the canvas from the stretcher bar. You definitely have a full plate and it will be so satidfying for you to add painting. Please check my website for workshop offerings, and please sign up for my mailing list. www.ianiworkshops.com

Hello, can you recommend the best softwood for building strong stretcher bars please? I'm in the UK and trying to find hardwood at reasonable prices is almost impossible, I've bought a Makita 2712 315mm table saw to start with, I'm wanting to make my own stretcher bars for large format printed canvas, I don't like the pre made ones

Bass wood is great. You can use fir but find the straight pieces. Watch out for knots

Isn’t that a strainer and not a stretcher? I thought the stretcher frame has keys and no fixed position. You tap the keys in to get the right tension in the canvas. 🤔
@ianistudio
@ianistudio Год назад
Never heard that distinction before. It is def stable and no keys.
@mandyalthiser8739
@mandyalthiser8739 Год назад
I really didn't know if I had the two mixed up. I love watching Baumgartner restoration but its been awhile. He explained the difference between the two. Usually strainers are use if the canvas has an inner leaf lining to stabilize the painting and doesn't really expand or contract with its environment. A stretcher is for stable canvases and the keys and non fixed frame allow for the adjustment.

Such an interesting distinction. Thank you.

Use wood screws not drywall screws. Same price, much better for what you’re doing with them.
@ianistudio
@ianistudio 3 года назад
Drywall screws are a courser thread so easier to disassemble and reassemble if you take them apart for shipping. Wood screws are better if the won't be broken down. Thanks for your comment.

It's a nice, solid frame, but that's not a stretcher bar. Stretcher bars make use of keys in the corners to stretch the canvas once attached, sized, primed, & painted, if the canvas ever slacks.

guys these are strainers not stretcher bars
@ianistudio

Thanks Boris-technically you may be right. We have always called them stretchers.

Continuous Tension Stretcher: A stretcher first developed in the mid-nineteenth century intended to provide constant, even tension. Depending upon the patent, the stretcher framework is most commonly wood or occasionally metal. Continuous tension is created by a variety of automatic spring mechanisms and/ or manually adjustable devices. Most designs adjust to movements within the stretched object automatically, without external manipulation. More complex stretcher designs function to eliminate concentrated stress at corners by distributing tensioning devices throughout the stretcher structure. Earlier designs are tensioned at the corners only.

The woods not bowing, the sawing wasn't accurate.
@ianistudio
@ianistudio 3 года назад
Not sure what you mean. Did you have trouble with this method?
@mrteacup8781
@mrteacup8781 3 года назад
@@ianistudio you sawed the wood , so bowing was a result of twisting in the cutting. ....and technically this isn't 'stretcher' it's just a wooden frame. Stretchers have keys to stretch the canvas
@ianistudio
@ianistudio 3 года назад
The many cuts on the wood prevent twisting. We use a good quality poplar and make sure the grain is straight. Any sticks that bend during cutting are discarded, or the bend is cut out. Stretcher bars are the common term since canvas is stretched over the frame.

"Professional"? If I ever bought a painting with these bars, I'd return it. Where do the keys go??
@ianistudio

No keys. These would be strainers
