Always an entertaining and informative video on this channel! I would say though that the Beatles In Mono CD Box set is *heavily* counterfeited, so a HUGE caveat emptor on that one! My own "totally legit honest guv" box set actually has the Help! back cover turned 90 degrees round! The counterfeit CDs are dreadful quality too and don't even play in many CD players.
I was going to say the same thing. You can usually tell by looking at the apple on the box as it is slightly misshapen and too dark. I believe the counterfeit copies don't have the replica inner sleeves either.
I brought a pirated Mono box too - In the pictures on the sellers website It was sealed but I couldn't see the Apple logo properly on the cover its green colour variation was give away at the time. the sound was terrible, covers done wrong cheaply etc etc Lucky though I was able to return/refund and later brought the correct one. The pirating problem is the same with the stereo box too
Oh God! Everyone, keep abandoning your CDs. Please! I'm killing it in the buyer's market. So yeah, keep abandoning your CDs. I'm right here catching them as they fall.
@@thepirategamerboy12 Greetings from a 60 years of age Beatles fan! I could never listen to any MP3. From what I overhear from others, I get the impression it is basically microsizing to the most tiny and hyper-compressed audio one could imagine, which will surely cause the listener to go deaf.
@pippin - The difference between CD audio and even the highest bitrate MP3 is that the original phase relationships of the harmonic tones are not preserved in an MP3. That randomizes the ambience in the recording, which is fine for casual listening, but can make a difference for multi-channel reproduction.
You have to admire the US albums and , particularly, the quote from the introduction of The Beatles Story where the Beatles are described as coming "from a poor, British, seaport slum town"! That always makes me roar with laughter, regardless of the format or pressing. (Funnier than The Rutles) Great video, as always.
I love the stock BBC footage they invariably run of a grimy child kicking a tin (In monochrome, naturally) every time there's a documentary about the north. People at the corporation haven't been any further north than Stevenage from the looks of it
The bread bin is fairly easy to fix if the slats come loose. Just unscrew it at the back, take out the slats, pull off the perished adhesive tape, line them up and apply your own gaffa/duck tape to the rear, slide them back in and screw back down. Bingo! Rolltop revived. My qualification for this sublime bit of fixery is being able to change a lightbulb in the dark.
As a massive Beatles fan, I had to draw a line as to where to stop collecting, and these are my selections (I don't have a turntable, so all are CDs): 1. Beatles Stereo Box Set (2009) 2. Beatles in Mono (2009) 3. Love 4. Yellow Submarine Songtrack (2012 reissue) 5. Beatles 1 (2015 remix) 6. Beatles Anthology 1, 2 and 3 in CD. 7. Beatles Anthology in DVD. 8. All Beatles movies in Blu Ray (still waiting for Get Back and Let it Be). 9. Let It Be (2021 remix, and this just for the Get Back album).
Great list! I would add: The Beatles ("White Album") 50th Anniversary Deluxe Box set. A Hard Day's Night (Criterion Collection). Get Back (Book). Anthology (Book & DVD set).
This got me to pull out my Japanese Blue Box. After cleaning the discs in an ultrasonic cleaner and playing on my latest system, I was amazed how clear and dynamic the first three albums so far have been. I hadn't played them since I had a much lower quality system.
Even though I'm not a Beatles fan to this extent (I have all the standard albums on CD, which I'm perfectly happy with) I'm finding the archaeological detail of this channel's videos compulsively watchable. Of course I've been listening to the Beatles since I was a kid in the '60s and '70s and started collecting around '77, so the vinyl pressings I had dated from that period. I ended up selling them in 2014 for more than I originally paid, and I was quite pleased with that. No regrets. My copies were store mint, since I only played them once, taped them to cassette, and stored the records. Whoever got my records ended up with top-shelf-condition pressings.
A brilliant summary of what to purchase. In the recent press, CD sales have been higher than ever recently. This may be due to the increase of the price of vinyl.
There's no possible way I would unsubscribe from this channel! Quality content and important information about the Beatles discography. Whether it be vinyl, cassette, reel to reel, 8-track, CD, etc! Also covers releases from nearly every country!
I would've also mentioned Canada's Beatlemania! With The Beatles, as well as the 50th anniversary reissues of their last 4 albums, which have their ups and downs but still overall sound decent and come with tons of bonus material.
The first three Canadian Beatles LPs are certainly worth getting, and can be found for decent prices. Mine all look like they've been played a lot over the years, but those old Capitol pressings are incredibly durable and will play well even with visible surface marks.
I grew up with the Capitol USA versions of the early Beatles records and wore them out long ago. Not only are those records no longer available, even the original American CD reissues are rare. What I recently discovered are the Parlophone remastered CD reissues of the original Beatles UK albums: Please Please Me, With the Beatles, A Hard Day's Night, Beatles for Sale, and Help! These CD's are available brand-new online and cover all but the Beatles' 45-rpm singles. For those, you can get the remastered Past Masters two-CD set (Parlophone/Apple). Almost all of the tracks on the remastered UK CD's are in stereo, and sound good for the most part, but the hard-panned stereo of many of the early recordings sounds dated. As a life-long American fan, I really enjoyed hearing the UK albums for the first time in the order the tracks were originally released. While I still find the original Capitol album covers nostalgic, the reissued Capitol Box Set Vol 1 lacks a number of the early tracks found on the UK albums (Please Please Me, Twist and Shout, Do You Want to Know a Secret). For those, you have to buy Box Set Vol 2 as well, which inexplicably failed to include the tracks from A Hard Day's Night (you get Rubber Soul instead).
@@jamessilver6429 - Something New contains many of the tracks on the Parlophone UK version of A Hard Day's Night album, but lacks two standout tracks: A Hard Days Night and Can't Buy Me Love. The American version of AHDN lacks most of the tracks on Side 2 of the Parlophone UK version, which is why I prefer the latter.
The 2009 US Albums released on CD for the most part has the UK mixes making up the albums. However, there are mixes which were released in the U.S. that were put onto the US Albums. The extended mix of "I'll Cry Instead" was on both mono and stereo copies of the Hard Day's Night soundtrack. The single guitar intro to Day Tripper (and the dropout within the song), were from the Yesterday...And Today album, included on the Y&T 2009 US album. Mostly UK mixes, but there were some U.S. mixes which also were present.
For me, I began buying first UK mono pressings last year, and I still say that’s my favorite way to enjoy the beatles music. However, it’s done a number on my bank account and not everyone has a high quality turntable, so I don’t blame anyone for grabbing the 2014 Mono CD collection!
Well I'm feeling a little better about my Beatles collection after watching this. Previous videos have shown me that I have all the wrong pressings of everything (I've got the German Magical Mystery Tour, but not the A1B3), but with today's video I realize that at least all of my UK LP pressings are in the desirable late 70's range, and I've got the Mono Box in both LP and CD. I assembled most of my Beatles LP collection in 1970 (when Allen Klein was liquidating their US back catalog on Apple) and in 1980 (when I had easy access to the UK albums). I never knew about differences in pressings until about 10 years ago and I can't afford to go back and update everything I already own. Have you ever created a video mentioning the box set of 3" CD singles? It's a fun one to have.
While the mono box set on vinyl may be long gone, the 3-LP "Mono Masters" from that set is still available at a reasonable price. Anyone missing the former should grab the latter ASAP.
I had the stereo box, so I slept on the Mono Box and just go the Mono Masters 3-LP set, thinking that would do me. Boy was I wrong, but I'm glad I got Mono Masters at least.
Because of your glowing reviews, I was able to pick up a Mint German copy of Magical Mystery Tour on the Apple label from 1976. Holy crap this is the very Best I have Ever heard this album! It has always been 1 of my favorite Beatle records (about #4 on my list). And this is hands down, the best I have Ever heard this album or the songs within it! I’m so happy to own this! The cover and the vinyl look and sound like I traveled back in time to the UK in 1976 and bought this brand new! One of the best in my collection. And Baby You’re a Rich Man bass on this has to be heard to truly get it! Actually the whole album does that but that’s a stand out 4 sure!
Thanks for the great video Andrew. The clarity around the 2019 singles box (that they sound like the original 45's, rather than the "highest - fi"), is very useful and persuasive. It may be worth keeping in mind that both BC13 and 1980's Beatles from Liverpool sets may be cut locally in the country of manufacture rather then the UK cuts referred to. Certainly the case in Australia, which is why I have a UK BC13. Score? Well until the 2019 singles come my way it's 7/10. Unlikely to get the Red & Blue 2014 as I have the 1978 singles box + Hey Jude LP +...... Might get the German MMT though.
Thanks Andrew. Glad to say I have the vast majority of that top ten and the mono box was my most expensive Beatles purchase at the time but so glad I bought it. I think I would add "I want to hold your hand" original 45 .
Mostly agree with a few caveats. My list of an essential Beatles vinyl collection is: + Red & Blue ARE the cornerstones of the collection. + The Beatles in Mono VINYL box set is absolutely essential. The CD version is no replacement. + BC13 for the stereo albums (IF you can get in good shape). + The Singles Collection + The 50th anniversary vinyl editions of Sgt. Pepper, White Album and Abbey Road (their three most important albums). + The 60th anniversary vinyl editions of Rubber Soul and Revolver, when it happens.
Great video Andrew! Fortunately I was able to collect everything in your list (including the 1980s CDs which I bought when they came out). It’s unfortunate Apple lost money on the mono vinyl set because it most likely will not be repressed which is a shame. The same with getting a new analog stereo set. Hopefully Apple changes it’s mind. Looking forward to seeing more content including a video on the Love album. Thanks for sharing!
It's my opinion that if they'd release them individually and get them on shelves where people can buy them, they could charge anything reasonable, make a profit and still undercut the scalpers. They like to make the Beatles items super scarce "collector items" fueled by fears that they will "lose money" and never repress because it ensures when they release the next expensive Beatles product, everyone clamors for it because its sure to be the next "scarce" "collectors item" they will "lose money" on. Why the most popular band in the history of the world can't just admit vinyl format is largely back, and get it into the hands of the listeners at a price that makes a profit, is beyond me. Metallica sells their albums on vinyl in WALMART for crying out loud.
Great video, but you forgot a couple things.. 1st, the other German must-have LP to get, a HörZu - "Die Beatles" or Apple/EMI Electrola - "Please Please Me" & maybe a Contour - "The Early Years". 🙂
With Please Please Me, be sure to get the A-2/B-2 version from the late 60s (either in the Tanzschaffe HörZu cover, or the regular one on Apple label).
Hi Andrew! Much younger Beatles fan here - looking to making a large collection of my own at some stage, and this video's very helpful. Very interesting choices, some of which intrigued me as they weren't exactly top of my list. Great video.
I don’t need to watch this one…here ya go: the mono box set, the Giles Martin white album & Abbey Road remixes, Let It Be…Naked, both BBC releases and every bootleg you can get your hands on! 😎
Great vídeo, Andrew! Now I know where I am in the rank and what I need to purchase. I'll work it out. Very good video, indeed! Carry on. Perhaps I'll go to your store in the U.K. to make business and, first of all, meet you. It would be really nice!
Two track I look for in compilations are, "I Want To Hold Your Hand," in mono and "Thank You Girl," the original mono version without John's extra harmonica fills.
Could I please ask you to make a video on how to identify what all the info on a record label and the markings inscribed around the records inner groove (?) means. I have my share of Beatle albums, EP's & Imports, but I don't know which versions of mixes they are or the dates they were pressed. Thank you very much. Love the channel. Top-notch professional for sure, Peace, Sal 💪
Great video Andrew and selections. I’m on a budget so I’m really pleased you factored in price and value for money 👍 I’m chuffed I’ve got 5 things from the list! BC13 and a German MMT are on my most wanted!
I'm glad to see The Beatles Love album get some... well... Love. I saw the show in Vegas back in 2008 and it was Fab. I revisit this album quite often because of the beautiful and surprising mixes. It sounds great on a quality stereo system as well as in my headphones. I'm looking forward to watching the episode devoted to this often overlooked classic.
I like the newly re mastered 2009 CD collections in card cardboard opening covers, booklets and original artwork. I also like the U.S. vinyl albums which I have some are Canadian. Have Beatles bootleg CDs too.
wow I was shocked to see I have six of the ten ! bought Beatles in mono boxset on mono the day it came out and I think it's perfect in every detail, especially the packaging which I fear the new releases will never eclipse (or even match) love your shows Andrew ! finally subscribed in recognition of your outstanding work. First time (and probably the only time) I have subscribed to any youtube channel
Phew, immediately ran to my box set shelf and pulled out my Capitol albums Vol. 2 CD box, and thankfully it was the "correct" version. Maybe that's a benefit of living in Canada, we might have only got the corrected versions! Wouldn't be the first time that Capital/EMI Canada got something right over our American cousins. And since the US mono version of Rubber Soul is how I remember first experiencing the record, the whole CD is getting a spin now and sounds big and bold on my Harman/Kardon setup. Thanks for the prompt to put it on!
Here's the ideal CD collection, I think: - The Beatles In Mono box set - Beatles Bop: Hamburg Recordings from Bear Family - first four albums: 2009 - 2009 Revolver - 1987 Sgt. Peppers - 1987 Magical Mystery Tour - 1987 Yellow Submarine - 30th Anniversary S/T - Japanese SHM-CD of Get Back (From Let It Be box) - 1983 Abbey Road after de-emphasis - 1987 Let It Be - 1988 Past Masters - 2009 Past Masters Bonuses: - Prof Stoned rip of mono Wonderwall Music LP - Prof Stoned rip of mono Christmas Album LP - 2016 Live At The Hollywood Bowl - 1994 Live At The BBC - Baby It's You Maxi-CD - 1995/6 Anthology 1-3 - Free As A Bird & Real Love Maxi-CDs - Rooftop Performance (From 'Albums that never were blog') - Esher Demos (From S/T remix 3CD) This has you covered for all the main stuff. If you want more BBC stuff (The original set was meant to be the only one), get the 2 remastered volumes and Bootlegs 1963 (In CD quality, Apple Music and Audacity are the best option). If you want remixes, get the remix box sets, 1+ (Handbrake and Audacity here), Naked 2CD and YS songtrack. That should have you covered : )
I would go with the 2013 remaster of Live at the BBC over the original. Much less noise reduction, and it just sounds better all around (in my opinion).
@@kalebaldwin5398 I thought the 2013s badly needed NR in places, and considering the fidelity of the recordings is low to start with, I don't think I'm losing much. To each his own!
What I would suggest for all the Beatles collectors out there and new fans that want to get real deep into the Beatles music, is the Beatles stereo and mono box that’s because you have all the albums which is great. I would also recommend the Beatles anthology CDs they’re great because they have different outtakes and songs that were never released and also the Beatles anthology that is the best documentary of the Beatles because it’s the Beatles telling their own story it is fantastic my favorite parts of the anthology the DVD set that I have features a montage of different outtakes which is great. I would also recommend the Beatles one especially on vinyl I have a double vinyl set which is good even though it doesn’t contain please please me or strawberry fields forever but it’s a great album.
My great sounding Beatles: Early years-Contour, LP Mono box 2014, US albums CD box 2014, Singles 2019, YS Songtrack, MMT A1-B3, German BC13-1978, EP-CD box, Let It Be-Naked, Red and Blue 2014.
That was a fantastic video! I’d also have included the German 70s pressing of „Please Please Me“ which is the best way to listen to this album in stereo😀
I do have some of these. The 1980s CDs I purchased at the time, and I have the mono LP set on CD. My Red and Blue albums were gifts in the early 80s, so I'm probably good there. I think some of the other items are on a wishlist that will probably be unfulfilled due to rising prices. Interesting that you included "Love" (which I have on CD). I'm looking forward to your video on that. Thanks again, Andrew!
It’s nice to see, for me anyways, that I have almost all of the ones you listed, and recommended. Whilst I don’t have the 2014 mono box in vinyl complete set with box and book, I do have all the individual ones, which cost me just under $1400 US. There’s a story as to why I didn’t get it, because I had a couple of things going at the same time and lost out on both, but I won’t bore you with anymore details. You are right though. That box set goes for around and over $2000 US, these days. Anyways after an on again off again 50 journey collecting Beatles records, it may be coming to an end. The ordeal of obtaining the mono vinyls was none too pleasant all though the results turned out to be okay, albeit a little more expensive than I would like. Aside from only that, it’s all been a great joy to my life only surpassed by listening phenomenal music The Beatles produced over a relatively short amount of time. As you mentioned with UK first pressings, my earlier records, played on lousy equipment, sound rough around the edges. So I can attest to that first hand. Oh well, one uses whatever one has at one's disposal at the time. I’m grateful I had something. You give good advice on buying them here. As always thanks for your entertaining and informative videos on Beatles vinyl, Andrew. Cheers! p.s. what are your thoughts on The Beatles BBC sessions?
I must buy more CDs these days than I ever did in the 90s. Mainly charity shops, often 50p a time. Albums that would have set me back over a tenner back in the day.
Great Video. I started collecting Beatles Albums back in the 90s. I have 11 of the 13 Beatles albums UK Mono 1st -3rd Pressings. Based on your recommendations I purchased the Red and Blue 73 UK Pressings and as well as the German MMT. The one Album often overlooked is the 2003 Japan Mono of Please , Please Me. Great alternative to a 1st Pressing and crystal clear.
Thanks again, Andrew. I own about fifty percent of your recommended collection; working on assembling the rest. I'll be receiving the 2019 Beatles Singles Collection today, can't wait to open it. Thanks for clearing up that issue related to its sound quality; personally, I'm a fan of so-called 'loud cuts'.
Although it may sound like a dumb question, I believe it's a fair one nonetheless: if the stereo 1987 CDs are better than the 2009 ones, are the vinyl releases from those 87 remasters better than the 2009 ones? I mean, as a 48 year-old person that started buy Beatles music in 1987, those two editions were the only ones available in stores as new/sealed products - besides the mono edition from early 2010s. Your videos are much appreciated, Andrew. Cheers from Brazil.
In short the 1978 BC 13 UK Box Set still are my favorite stereo versions. The 2009 vinyl is (imo) garbage. Parlophone has addressed many of your questions. See their videos, they are very well thought out. To me, it's refreshing to see someone that I tend to agree with 80 percent of the time. That's the beauty of humans, everyone's hearing is unique and so some may love Giles versions better than Harry Moss's (for example). Again, the top ten picks are really good. Best to you!
The BC13 box set from 1987 contained both analog and DMM cuttings. The 1987 vinyl is vastly superior to the 2009 set. From Discogs: 12 Sides of these records were cut by using the DMM (Direct Metal Mastering) technology sourced from the original analog master tapes, as follows: With The Beatles (Side A) A Hard Day's Night (Side A) Beatles for Sale (Side A) Rubber Soul (Side B) Revolver (Sides A & B) Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Sides A & B) The Beatles [White Album] (Sides A & D) Abbey Road (Side B) Rarities (Side B) The rest of the Sides were mastered as the conventional lacquer cuts sourced from the original analog master tapes as well.
Great Video Andrew!! Now I will go over what I bought . Step one the Captiol albums 1978 purple reissue in stereo and 1960’s Captiol mono album’s the label in Ranibow. 2 the Beatles Liverpool box! 3 The Beatles Single Collection I just love it! Plus I bought all of the us Captiol singles too. Plus some Japan prints too. 3 bought the UK albums from 2009 it was a cheaper route to go. 4 mono box set and all of the Captiol box set vol 1 and 2 plus the 50th anniversary box. 5 the 3 Captiol Canada albums plus the German prints all on the blue label Oden. 6 the EP Collection from 1982. And the compilations from Rock n Roll music to Rarities . And Finally Beatles 62-66. 67-70 i have those on the 1973 prints and the other day bought the 2010 blue album. And The Beatles 1 on vinyl! So that’s not even the rest of my Beatles collection not even the Solo years! Thanks Andrew!!
Andrew, great information as always. Thank you for the love you gave to the eighties 💿. I listened to those for decades. Looking forward to your LOVE video.
Almost halfway out of the ten... 😆 Andrew, I payed attention to the 1987 CDs and double checked with mine. What's the difference between the CDs *with* CDP and *without* it before the catalogue number? Does it indicate a later pressing? Thanks so much for this wonderful video! 😊
By more luck than judgement, it turns out I have all the CD recommendations in this video. Plus all the Beatles LPs I bought new are from the early 80s, pre barcode and DMM badging so presumably all analog masters. Another interesting video Andrew and as usual the graphics / titles are great as well.
Another way to tell if you have a correct copy of The Capitol Albums vol 2 is if the sticker on the shrinkwrap (assuming it has one of course) has "SK1" after the catalogue number. It's extremely small print but it's believed that these are the corrected copies. Another great video by the way as always!
Great that you've included Love in there, it's a lovely experience. I might be mis-remembering, but I think George Martin recorded a string part for the While My Guitar Gently Weeps demo effectively creating a brand new Beatles track, exclusive to this release. I look forward to seeing your video which I am sure will go into this release in more depth. As far as other great sounding releases, I'd put forward the German DMM White Album (on white vinyl) as an immense sounding record. Rich sound, and incredible bass. I also really like the '76 Japanese EAS version of Abbey Road. Not quite up to the UK original pressing standard, but it does reveal details that I've not heard on any other pressing. Keep up the great work on these videos, they are always a treat to watch!
I’d certainly agree about the German DMM White Album but more so the German DMM BC13 set, it’s my all time favourite stereo mixes with a really rich and vibrant low end, particularly the first eight albums therein. I got mine from Parlogram and would urge anyone to grab this particular set should the opportunity arise.
Yep, that's exactly the case with the WMGGW demo. It's divine. Btw, anybody who shuns Love because it's "just a mashup album"...remember, as Andrew points out, it's a soundtrack album. If you're fortunate enough to see the show (which I'll be doing for I think the eighth time next week!), it really makes the album make sense. Once you see it and hear it in context, everything makes sense.
Another informative and entertaining video. I have had the BC13 in my collection and although the sound quality was excellent I was a tad dissapointed that my set, bought in my hometown Assen in The Netherlands, seemed to be somewhat of a mixed bag when the album covers were concerned. For example, my box set had a reissue of Please Please Me with a Dutch blue print about some record award the album had received in The Netherlands, but my version of With The Beatles was the blue and green Odeon pressing. I am happy to say that the post 1965 album covers were alright but it seemed that the Dutch EMI just had thrown in everything they still had lying around from the 1963-1965 era to get the boxes complete. Looking forward to your take on the LOVE album!
Damn. Just went to my Capital Albums Vol 2 and played I'm Looking Through You. Stereo and Mono both same intro's. Oh well. I'll wait to see the Love review.
I really like that intro track Andrew. Where can I get it? I wish you and the channel were around 10 years ago when I was on ebay buying Original ( or what was advertised as) pressings.
Always enjoy your informative and entertaining videos . From my experience I would say the best sounding addition to a Beatles collection in my view and ears . The Beatles in Mono CD and Vinyl sets . I was lucky enough to acquire both . The first big addition by collection was the 1987 CD rolltop collection that I got as a Christmas present The following year . I worked for years to get all the recent 2009 remasters is on vinyl. Not always happy with the sound but sounds way better on vinyl than on CD. If I had the money I would love to get all of the original pressings from Parlophone
Apple should've used the Dexter or Capitol mixes for that US box set. The packaging looked great but not sure why they avoided those mixes. Would have been authentic and collectable and interesting on hearing those weird edits/mixes. Interesting to know that the Love LP sounds better than the CD.
It atleast has some of the unique mixes, but yeah definitely needed a full capitol tape transfer. It should have also included MMT even if being in the "In Mono" CD set. Honestly though, my dream is that whenever they do another round of showing the beatles' movies in theaters, they reissue Reel Music & Movie Medley.
Well you made me feel pretty good. I scored a 5 out of 10. I have been thinking, what in the world made start buying imports in the mid 70s. I’m glad I did. I have been listening to albums that I haven’t played in forty plus years. It’s great, like I enjoy the music so much. Thanks Andrew and Parlogram. Alex Zotynia
As I'm of the same vintage I have 70s pressings including the Red (black vinyl) and Blue (blue vinyl) albums, plus the From Liverpool Box Set and the Mono CD set.
Hey Andrew. I have red that the 2track Session tapes of 4 beatles songs got lost, but what about the Mono Master Tapes of them. Are they all lost as well or just of some?
4:08 - I have a blue version of the Australian boxset. The strange thing though is there are some albums that have "Made in Australia" on the covers, but some of the record have "Made in New Zealand" on the vinyl. I've always wanted to find out why this happened. Obviously some surplus copies were pressed and subsidiaries EMI Australia and EMI New Zealand pooled resources.
My first beatles record was a 70's issue of abbey road printed in japan Even though the cover has been sun damaged and there are a few tears. I still enjoyed it and it sounds amazing
Really nice ! Could you do one day something about the 2012 promo Lp "Tomorrow Never Knows" that they did after the itunes compilation of the same name ?
My first pressing of beatles for sale is odd condition wise. The sleeve looks like it was in a high-grade shredder but it has a genuine 1st pressing stereo disk in pretty good shape. It has a bit of marks, but it plays very clean!
Hi Andrew great video as always, any difference in sound quality between the 1999 and 2005 pressings of The Yellow Submarine soundtrack? Just that find the 2005 pressing easier and cheaper to track down. Many Thanks
Love it, Andrew, and thank you beating the drum for the Yellow Sun Songtrack. I can’t get over how good the remixes are. Separate question. Maybe I’ve missed it, but have you ever simply gone through album by album (UK) and simply told us whether you prefer the mono or stereo mix (or possibly modern remix)? Would love to hear your opinion on that.
I bought the Beatles' Capitol Albums Volume Two when it came out. For at least a few months afterwards, Capitol would allow you to mail in your Beatles VI and Rubber Soul mispressings (with the fold down mono mixes), and, in exchange, they would mail you the correct discs, with true mono mixes. The original mono LP releases of The Early Beatles and Help! were stereo fold downs anyway, so no need to exchange.
I'm so glad I bought the 2014 mono vinyl box set when it came out, even if i had the 2009 CD box already. I'd have no chance to get one nowadays. Looking forward to see your video about Love. While i dont love it, its an interesting new way to listen to these songs. Specially Hey Jude. Does anyone else would also love to hear the Love mix of Hey Jude without the crossfade with Sgt Peppers reprise at the end?
Looks like I'm all good, except for the 2019 singles box which I am loathe to buy for LMD. I do have the blue box singles set anyway. Thanks again Andrew for another interesting video.
Andrew, I’m a first generation collector who never really cared for vinyl technology, even when it was all most of had access to. And, yes, I had expensive turntables with Ortofon cartridges. Just curious. Since when were EMI recordings of the Beatles albums EVER “uncompressed?” There’s a huge amount of compression used in released mixes of Beatles recordings, especially their earlier ones. Also, to my recollection, as playback technology of the time was extremely limited, the bass and kick drum were almost (relatively) non-existent on those mono releases, correct?
All of the Beatles’ original albums that are on major streaming platforms are from the 2009 remasters but they are slowly being added by the Giles Martin mix as another option. As far as I know, the closest you can get to mono Beatles albums on digital/streaming is through the U.S. albums box set (2014) which is on iTunes and Apple Music.
