How to Build the FT Goblin // BUILD

Our take on the RMRC Goblin!
Before flying make sure you program reflex into your elevons. The elevons should be raised to an angle about one thickness of foam above the training edge of the wing for best flight characteristics. Adjust based on nose weight and desired flight characteristics.

For anyone (like myself) wondering what they meant by "Reflex", refer to this page. www.flitetest.com/articles/flying-wing-set-up-wash-out-and-reflex To sum it up, flying wings all have a tendency to nose down thanks to having no tail and the airfoil shape. So you are basically adding "up trim" from the start.

I really like the faster pace of the video. When you've built one or two FT planes it's pretty clear how things are done so no need to labour the point on every video. Just a couple of things for Josh and Andres to think about during design, tight curves are brilliant, if you have a laser cutter, but are difficult to get neat with a scalpel.. And whereas you can easily peel the paper off FT and DT foamboard, it's not so easy using the boards available in much of the rest on the world.
@Timless2
@Timless2 6 лет назад
Andy Timmons, all my builds are dollar tree foam... and I bemoaned the same thing about curves. I found something that works for me now. I use an exacto knife and not my regular blade. When approaching a corner I don’t try a cut the corner, I prick the curve. When I turn the board over, I connect the dots. The tighter the curve, the more I appreciate the technique. Hope this helps.
@stevefox3763
@stevefox3763 5 лет назад
Blaming your tools and materials is lame, I manage tight curves with no problems, it's just about practice and making sure you regularly change your blade. The foamboard available elsewhere in the world is actually better quality and stronger, peeling the paper is absolutely possible, there's an art to it, if you just try to rip it off then your gonna fail. I manage to make all of the ft planes with UK foamboard without any problems at all, if you can't do it then you need to refine your techniques, not blame the people who release FREE plans.
@robertmiles9942
@robertmiles9942 5 лет назад
@@Timless2 This is a good technique. I'll even flip my template and pin-mark the other side of the board as well so the curve comes out looking sharp on the exposed side of the foam. Sometimes, on a tricky curve, I'll cut it fairly close but finish up with an emery board or sandpaper. You don't have to be as exact with the blade that way.
@kbangfpv6226
@kbangfpv6226 5 лет назад
G'day I'm from down under (Australia) our foam board is crap as well doesn't peel like the ft one so if you cover the part that you need to peel with packing tape the paper comes off with the tape when u pull it off 👍🏻👌🏻
@stevefox3763
@stevefox3763 5 лет назад
@@kbangfpv6226 the foam board that does not peel as stronger than the ft stuff, it may be harder to work with during construction but it's a better material for the finished plane :)

Hi Flite Test, I scratch built the FT Goblin and it wasn't that easy to cut the curbs. Finishing I admit it's not perfect. Then I painted it with acrylic paint and today I maidend it..... And it was awesome. With the Graupner 2804 Motor from the FT Power Pack A and a 6x4 Prop, 2200mah 3 cell it flew like hell. It started out of my hand without throwing it. And not to forget it makes much less noise than the mini Arrow with same power equipment. My neigbours will not call the Police again, as they did twice. It's just a great great great Goblin. Thanks to the Andres the constructor, you really did an absolutely great job! I'm really enthusiastic about this plane.
@jahatton
@jahatton 5 лет назад
I completed a scratch build of this plane. I had reservations as I had built another company's plane and was very disappointed with the results. When I completed the wing halves I was simply blown away by how perfect they matched each other when I connected them together! The only problem I had was with the material I had. I purchased black foam board which was all the dollar store had. When taping I found the paper would peal off with it when repositioning. After the plane was finished the test flight was anything but normal, nothing to do with the plane or design but a programming issue on the Futaba radio. Can't wait to fly it again when the weather gets better. I do plan to build a second Goblin using the much more robust white foam board!

I think this build format is perfect for planes not designed for beginners. I do like the in depth videos josh does as he gives many build tips beginners will not know. But for a plane that is not made for beginners this format is perfect. I totally want to scrach build one now!

Having built several foamboard planes from the FT plans, I appreciate the faster pacing of the build vid. A 1st-timer might get a bit frustrated, but then again, they'd probably start with a cub or sparrow. I think some post-effect arrows and highlighted areas would be useful, though, when you say to cut/glue here, here, and here.
@MSmith-jf5wo
@MSmith-jf5wo 6 лет назад
I like the way everything is explained, especially the little "HINTS" you add. Keeps an old fart like me "on my toes", and makes me think before I act (like gluing or cutting something that shouldn't be glued/cut, before doing doing another step in construction!) Haha! You guys are the GREATEST, and I hope I can build everyone of your planes before I'm gone. Thanks for making me smile, every time I watch your videos.

Andres makes the best built videos by far. Most people who are building this plane have probably built several other ones and know the jist of it. I would actually like to see a highly abbreviated version for each model... 5 min, a high-level overview of the assembly. Skip the electronics, control rods, motor/prop - just how the foam goes together. This should especially be considered for the advanced skill level planes, if you should be flying the plane, chances are you know how to glue up a foamy.

I want to get into RC flying and wanted to see if I can pull it off. So I am a brand new NOOB who decided to build the Goblin. Here is what no one tells you NOT TO DO if you decide to scratch-build the goblin. 1. DO NOT USE ELMERS FOAM BOARD. I used this in my first 2 scratch-built Goblins. Although it was within the Max weight limit, as soon as I wing-launch it, it would roll over (inverted) and nose-dive vertically into ground. Longest flight time was around 2 seconds. (could not figure out the roll-over into inverted position though.) (maybe I should mount the battery lower in the battery bay to lower CG below CP? 2. Do NOT USE 1300KV motor. I used a 2512, 1300KV motor with a 6 x 4 E Prop, and a 4S-2200mah Li-Po. Thinking the motor would have higher torque compared to a 2206. and would produce good RPM with a 4S battery. but that probably contributed more to the crashes and the 2-second flight times. My Plan at present is that I am almost finished building my 3rd Goblin using Walmart foam board (this plane weighs around half of my previous builds). I have the 2206 2300Kv radial motor on order from FT. I plan on using a 3S, 1500 Li-Po and a 6 x 4 E Prop, my aim is to achieve longer flight-times than my previous ones. If anyone can find a Flaw(s) in my present plan. Please let me know.

It seems like you're getting opposing points of view on the SPEED of the Format..... A lot of us like the slower paced, thorough "Bixler" Style. Andres, as far s Presenting, has improved by LEAPS since he started!!! 👍👍 I concur with the consensus that the hyper speed, and skipping parts, is detrimental to the newer Guys. Flying isn't EASY! You need to arm the N00B with as much knowledge as you can - even being redundant. Try to remember, many of us have progressed WITH you..... Many others, are just starting out. Don't forget them!! Cool design. But everyone on flitetest is killing me with saying hot glue "dries". How about "set", "harden" or "cool" stead of dry. Edit: Sorry for the rant, it's like the word literally which needs to be used sparingly. To add positive feedback, I actually like the new fast format. We don't always need to see the gluing and cutting in realtime. I noticed you also had a top view camera live feed that was displayed on the iMac. But it was rarely in view, so it didn't really help. Maybe you can have a PIP in the corner to the top view.
