You’ve probably heard the incredible story of the PayPal Mafia from the early 2000s. This group of 20 and 30-year olds first built a fintech giant and then went on to create some of the world’s most valuable tech companies. Without PayPal there would be no Tesla, LinkedIn, SpaceX, Yelp, RU-vid, Palantir or Affirm. And those are just what I call PayPal’s first-order ventures. It ignores any investment checks written by PayPal alums, including Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund.
How did PayPal manage to gather so many high-caliber individuals during such a pivotal time period? As I look to build a team of high-achievers myself, I’ve become obsessed with this idea. Is it possible to build a PayPal Mafia today? If so, how would we do that? In this video I explore what it takes to build the next generation’s PayPal Mafia.
- ABOUT PROBABLY SOMETHING -
Hey, I'm Kunal. I'm a Swedish founder in NYC and ex-investment banker (Lazard M&A). You can think of this as my personal business blog, but in video format.
I create videos about finance, business strategy, M&A and mental models to help me better understand our complex business world. Through my work, I've mostly covered tech, media, healthcare, sports and holdcos so those are naturally the topics I gravitate towards.
My goal is to constantly challenge myself to become a better business operator, investor and thinker by studying world class founders, financiers and investors. I hope this channel will help you do the same.
Just sharing what I'm learning along the way and documenting my journey - nothing on here should be considered financial advice.
