"You can feed the world", thanks for pointing out the incredible abundance planet earth provides. People forget that there is enough for everyone. The problem is that the wrong people have power. Great video as always.
Yup, always encourage people to be independent when it comes to food. The last few years has proved you can’t enter a grocery store unless you jump through government hoops.
I've been told that you shouldn't criticize anyone for mispronouncing a word. Most of the time, that person learned the word they are mispronouncing by reading it. They've never heard it pronounced before. Keep trying to improve yourself, as we all should, but don't be too hard on yourself either. I haven't met anyone that was perfect yet.
Just got my first rabbits last week. One buck, 5 does. Rex and New Zealand and mixes of those two. Finally got the cages set up and waterers and feeders this afternoon. The buck should be ready to mate very soon.
After watching this video at least twice I think I kinda understand I need to watch it again to make sure but this dude is brilliant when it comes to rabbits he is at a whole new level.... good job Bobby and thank you
I did not know this. I thought across living species minus plant life inbreeding bring side effects. City life makes you paranoid and hungry 😆! I am learning. Thanks for the information, most of all.
@@TheUltimateAcrespure bred dogs are a fancy way to say inbred dogs. Inbreeding literally creates different breeds. Genetics only demand some difference, not complete difference. A human cannot breed with anything but humans. Too much difference isn’t viable. Not enough difference? Birth defects. There is a Goldilocks zone of inbreeding for everything. Look into hybrid vigor while you’re at it.
great video, I think it needs maybe part 2 and 3, like the infrastructure that we need to have to hold the production, how much feed they will need, tricks to reduce the amount of feed with home grown plants and cheaper substitutes
Thanks for this info. I am setting up for a circular breeding system from 3does and 2 bucks to make 3 or 4 maternal colonies. Best females stay with the mothers group. Best males from each group are only bred to the next group and so on each generation. A to B. B to C. C to A. Rest are culled or sold. By the time you get around again you will be 3-4 generations out so no inbreeding. You could go almost indefinitely without needing to outcross.
Perfect video!!!! I'll watch it several times and have my pen and paper and start planing my breeding for this year!! Just love that you do this for US!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!! Lots of love and big hugs!! //Rita, Sweden
@@TheRabbitryCenterhi we have some rabbit for over 6 month. One buck and 3 does. But they are not reproducing and we don't know the issue or whats causing that
This is what I need to do I'm starting over with my babbies I started out with used rabbits older ones I didn't no better I found out the hard way man love ur videos bobby mine were in my house but now there a two car garage set up very nice keep up the great educational videos
Thank you... lol I feel that this video was just for me. I'm doing it slightly different...... as in that I hVe 2 lines going but plan on replacing bucks periodically with unrelated bucks from someone else. That being said.... if shtf happens I needed to know this so that I don't inbreed.
I mean....it is spelled a-gout-i. My instinct was to pronounce it like the medical condition too. This is so helpful, we need more rabbit breeding/genetics out there.
Thank you for this video! I was wondering if you could make a video, if you haven't already, about what is an "exceptional" or "beautiful" breeder to pick from the litter. I had limited breeders of meat rabbits in a 4 hour radius. I was able to get a NZ buck from one breeder and two related NZ does from another breeder. I think my buck is a good type, but the does may be too long, narrow, and small for their breed. I'm expecting kits next week, and want to know what to look for to enhance my line of breeders. Thanks again!
I was trying to explain why I want to have rabbits for meat to my bf the other day, I think I'm going to send him this and maybe he'll listen afterward lol
one thing I should mention is the cages that junll0 makes out of the wire shelving. It really is brilliant and a huge time saver. You should have a look at it.
I see that this video is several years old but I love the info. Do you have other videos about line breeding like this that I can watch? I would even love to see a very specific video of how many cages… cage size for grow out groups, how many in the cage together etc. to be able to raise the massive amount you spoke about in the video. Maybe videos of what that type of breeding looks like more details about line breeding…. Etc. this is super interesting. Im Fairly new to rabbits. Just got started about a year ago and was given some mutt rabbits that Ive breed this year for meat. I live in Ohio so I deal with seriously cold winters like you. I love your videos! Im thinking about investing in pedigree rabbits just for sale purposes. Thanks for sharing the content you have!!
Im so happy you liked the video. I agree, Line breeding and rabbit genetics is very interesting. Here’s another video you may enjoy ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aQJEzPWxNZw.htmlfeature=shared
Very educational but I'm living in Trinidad ad they were trying to promote the consumption of rabbits but I only want to start with 4, ad only mentain about 8 at home ad give away or sell others...😌🙏🏾 now kinda doing the research..thanks
Thank you for This informative video. This is the first time I have seen this breeding system. It all seems to look like it would work out for the desired results. The most important thing is always selecting your breeding stock for the qualities you desire.
I have 1 male thats kind of rangy... as in he is built long bodied kind of like a larger version of a jackrabbit... he will be replaced first... im breeding him to the stockist females to add. Little length to them but won't line breed him. He is a 1 off
I've been been building up production over the years. Small steps. I'm finally working on a larger setup that I have wanted to do for the longest time but couldn't. I started with 3 breeders. Now I have 10 and planning to double that before the year is finished.
my meat rabbit does won't take but my lionheads will. go figure. Sorry. just venting a little. Thanks for all the instruction you've given me over the last two years through your videos. You're an awesome instructor!
Hi, I enjoyed the video and found it easy to understand, but I am left with the question, "then what"? once you build your herd out to some unrelated and some linebred, how do you maintain the herd? or do you pick 4 unrelated rabbits from the family and start again?
hahaha I just looked this up because, well, I just had to know! :Fact: A group of wild rabbits is called a fluffle or a colony. Fact: A group of rabbits lives in a warren. A FLUFFLE! Could it be any better? Really!? I love it! hahaha
Hello, I am from Bulgaria and here I have a farm for rabbits that I raise. I learned useful things that I did not know from you, although here we raise them differently, in wooden cages with a solid floor. I want to ask if you give any medicine to the young before weaning for coccidiosis because here we have a big problem with it and we start giving medicine from day 20 to day 30 so we have no problems after weaning. Also at what age we start slaughtering rabbits here we do it at 4 months. Thanks for the amazing videos it's nice to see how these animals are kept on the other side of the world.
Just a thought... if the supply chain goes down and pellets and orchard hay or Timothy hay cannot be obtained, WHAT WOULD YOU FEED YOUR RABBITS???? In other words, how would you ensure they survive and THRIVE in hard times???? I’m asking because we are considering a few pet rabbits. Thank you very much.
I would grow my own hay And gather my own food ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9eYSa_viN9s.html Feeding more than pellet ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dTWFHLbh6hs.html
No need to apologize for mispronouncing agouti. It is only a word. And, a tricky one at that. Maybe your pronunciation of "agowtee" could be written in to new rabbit song played on your guitar? :) You have to have a video go viral at some point!
thank you so much the best how to I have found! my question is more about sustainability- closed herd stuff. I also have chickens. Is there some reason three family spiral breeding will not work for rabbits so I can have meat etc for at least 20 generations. I can then line breed for rabbits with various qualties but still know I never need to source another buck or doe?
Good question traditionally, a chicken breeding method. Spiral breeding would absolutely work. You'd want them the same color but the only thing is when it comes to your rabbit herd, most folks become very selective/picky when picking future breeders. You want breeders that put up good numbers as well as terrific shape. You'll want to exercise selective breeding rather than just stay on a rotation program, regardless of quality. Hope that makes sense. Thanks for watching.
Have you ever tried breeding two chestnut rabbits to try and get one with an opal coloration? I bred my two chestnut mini lops and got an opal one, after I did some research I found out that there is a chance for an opal fur color every time two chestnuts are bred.
Can you elaborate on creating a pedigree? Meaning, can you inline breed to create a pedigree or do they need to be unrelated in order to charge a premium? What traits do you look for when picking your rabbits?-besides liking when they great you at the door? Thanks!
They don't need to be unrelated to have a Pedegree. They don't even need to be purebred to have a pedigree it's just simply it's the recorded ancestry from the last 3 generations. Keeping your rabbits purebred and keeping pedigree records will help you sell for a premium price. When picking out rabbits, make sure they are 100% healthy. Try purchasing from a reputable breeder. It's best to familiarize yourself with what that breeds standard of perfection is. That way you know what to look for. Here's a book that'll help you amzn.to/3HoQXU8
@@TheRabbitryCenter Thank you! I will check out the book. So, one can charge a premium even if the pedigree is with related rabbits or is the premium only with unrelated rabbits? Thanks so much!
Hello do you have a video about keeping pedigree how to? I know that it takes three generations, I have 5 NZ that are Pedigree, but my California are not from full breeding stock from both being 4-h families. Thank you for sharing. Till next time God Bless.
I believe you’re referring to Thomas Austin in 1859. Introduced rabbits to be hunted. We discuss this in our podcast episode number 10 a link below if you get an opportunity to listen. www.buzzsprout.com/2240959/episodes/13790686
Good luck finding any 14g 1/2x1 right now, which should be your bottom of the cage (especially for larger breeds), not a 16g. But, it it hard to find, so a 16g will work, but you have to pay attention to their hocks more closely.
Marvelous explanation thats easy to follow. Question my dear: I have a pair (my frist) that was sold to me as a "proven" breeding pair. Doe was actually still nursing when I bought her. Now, for the last month I try to breed her to her known buck, that I bougt with her, as the breeding proven pair. Well. He humps and humps but no cigar. I recently asked you if im turning them out in too large of a run to court, and you said YES. SO NOW, I do what you showed in your video about "resistant does". She goes into HIS cage. Three weeks now, full moon included, and she just will NOT lift for him!! I feel like taking this pair back to the seller and get my money back. Nothing easier that breeding rabbits, and lo and behold - not this pair. She licks her feet, licks her sides, makes sounds but will NOT lift for him. Any ideas?? Thanks! Love your vids! (Breed:Dutch)
The short days and cold temps could be playing a factor. Try introducing some light (12hour days)to trigger breeding. You can always wait until late February when the temps warm up and the light increases too. Try introducing a half a dozen black oil seeds on a board and a cap of apple cider Vinegar in her water daily. This might get her moving in the right direction Hope this helps
@@TheRabbitryCenter thanks, but the pair is inside a barn with 12 hour light cycle for my chickens and the temps are above zero inside. Its about 5 to 10 Celsius inside. Today I felt her vulva and it's a bit... crusty. So now I'm worried if she is even okay? Why would her vulva be crusty? She is acting healthy.
@@TheRabbitryCenter yes, I will. Still no proper copulation. My buck is getting frustrated. After I take her away he sits there grumpy and sullen. Blue balls???
They are slowly coming back in Australia. I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for the Rabbit. My father used to hunt them to feed us. We would have starved as we were very poor. The government stopped the hunting and started to poison the rabbits instead. They can’t get taxes from free food. My mother used to cook a mean rabbit stew. Because they stopped us eating rabbit my mothers Recipe is lost forever. I was very young when she cooked rabbit. I have no idea what she did to make it so good and she’s no longer with us. Soon as I got rabbits again to breed for food knowing that trouble is coming and I wanted to prepare as best as I can my family are far from happy with me. They haven’t been slapped in the face yet as to what’s happening and they don’t want to know. Until they start hurting they will not understand what I have been trying to tell them. I can prepare all I want but In the near future I could be stopped from digging in my own backyard if our Activists Aboriginals take over the country. We should be as one “Equals” but the government here is hell bent on handing our country to city activists not real Aboriginals who also don’t want none of this to take place. We are their family and they are ours and our government wants to tear us and our country apart. They are all purposely crashing our countries all over the world and in anyway they can. This is apart of our governments to destroy us.
Well of course you want your Californians to meet the standard of perfection to the best of your ability but you also want your mothers to good lifters have big litters and care for their litters minimizing losses Healthy and hardy.
I watch the video five times I think I've got it ,,,a little confusing . I will do my first Breeding March 1st , Let me know when you have Silver Fox To sell, I'll be your first customer LOL
I had bad luck to start with a doe with a false pregnancy and a doe with a distended uterus who was 2xs proven who passed but I didn’t let that stop me. I have since then decided to breed 2 new does and the one with a false pregnancy. I was thinking of getting a second buck to have 2 lines.
Color, shape, temperament and body size Are all up to you and everyone has their preference. Next time there’s a rabbit show around stop in and see which rabbits are the best in your area this will help you understand what folks try to shoot for
So im seeing a lot of people saying to process at 12 week, but also saying the hides are too soft to use at that age, so what would be a good age to process for meat when the hides are strong enough to use?
is Agouti a common color for New Zealands? I can only seem to find white and blacks in my area. I would like to get into rabbitry mainly for the furs for the lining my beaver fur hats but I want something natural and primitive looking
Check out Chestnut agouti, Tamuk rabbits even some darker palomino rabbits would be great rabbits. I’d ask a rabbit group on Facebook and google “agouti rabbits or breeders near me.”
Please let me know if I'm wrong, In litter BBDD for the 4 and 5 breeding, you've accounted for three females but only have two available. Do we breed one of the females twice and over what time period?
Yes breed them back to the Sire and Dam. Inbreeding rabbits is a common practice and used to build the traits you want in your line. It's called Linebreeding which is a careful thought out plan to lock in preferred traits. It's used in Plants, Crops, Dogs, Horses and even chickens. linebreeding rabbits brings out the recessive traits that are hidden so you can see them and breed accordingly. Here's a video sharing a little more info. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aQJEzPWxNZw.html
I'm starting my bunny journey.... with the pure intent to raise meat rabbits.... once I figured out how much you can sell poop for, and hides... and offspring.... one sale from each doe pays for the doe.... thier poop and hides pay for the feed... it's almost like raising my own free meat
@@TheRabbitryCenter thanks for the great info... I for the life of me can't understand why rabbit hadn't become a staple meat... seems easier on the pocket book AND the planet.... far less need for the output
Great video and very informative. I am still having trouble understanding how to organize my breeding. Could you please help me work out my breeding? I certainly do not mind compensating you for your time and teaching knowledge. Any help you can offer is very much appreciated.
On average 5 litters a year. If you don't want to harvest all the time or you don't need that much meat than you can wait. Here's a video showing different times to rebreed and what you'll get. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bUR4-EoQDPs.html&t
If the kits bellies are looking fat/round, they are being fed. The doe will only feed her kits once or twice a day, and you will usually not see it. Just make sure the kits bellies look full, not thin and wrinkled. If the doe is not feeding them, and you don't have another doe with kits around the same age that can foster them, you will have to feed them yourself, or they will die! Talk to a vet in that case, and fast, because they will die very quickly. P.S. Sounds like you really, really need to do a lot of research on raising rabbits!
@@MaryGatdula yes I need to I didn’t have as many cages so two of my does was in the same cage n one of the doe have a liter of 6 and I assume that it was one the brown one but it was the white one so I take the rong doe out n put im somewear else with the kits n they all does n a few days later the brown doe has 6 kits but 3 of them died and I have to hold the mother rabbit to feed the thee that’s left ime wondering 💭 if it is just because the first she is having kits caused that
You’ll need one cage for every breeder Grow out cages -There’s several ways you can do this You can harvest your rabbits at 12 weeks -you can grow them all out in one big cage and rebreed your doe when the kits have reached 9-10 weeks or You can keep the does with mom and put the bucks in a separate cage to give yourself a little more time until you can get time to harvest the rest of them. You’ll need 7 grow out cages. If you plan on breeding every 60 days and Letting your rabbits grow out past three months you’ll need 14 grow out cages. Hope that’s not too confusing
Loved this video! Im starting over soon and will be using all this wonderful knowledge in my future plans. How often do you incorporate new blood to your program? How do you work it in?
Whenever there is a new characteristic that I want or if I were to ever experience unhealthy rabbits Or doe’s that aren’t producing the way I want them to
Absolutely Starting with just 1 buck and a couple doe. You can breed based on your needs. Here’s a video on when to rebreed a Doe to get a certain amount of meat
