This table arrived well packaged and on time. ru-vid.comUgkxn94T8Mu1iMnsLCMNOI9srXSsLkI4JXKW Like another reviewer advised, I pulled everything out and made sure everything was included (everything was!). I built it alone and it took me about an hour. The color is great and for the price the lift part works well. As others have mentioned, it’s not the smoothest opening/closing, but it works. The screws do show, but I plan to order white sticker covers if that bothers us too much. Really happy with this table! UPDATE: it’s been over a year since we got this coffee table and we still love it! It gets HEAVY use as our dining table, foot rest, and school desk. Over time, the opening and closing mechanism has gotten smoother. I added a new photo with the white screw cover stickers. They blend in perfectly and make it look a little cleaner. 100% recommend!!!

I absolutely love the way the table turned out. But what I love the most is the way this video was put together because of the transparency and honesty when it came to showing the real process considering the fact that there are many DIYers out there like me who have little to no experience with wood working. You have shown your audience that it can be done with minimal tools. This is very helpful! Thank you!

Great Video. I am an amateur wood worker with roughly the same tools and setup you guys have. I am getting better with each project and learning things the hard way. It is nice to see a video of people who aren't professionals in a $50,000 workshop. My next project is a farmhouse dining table which is how I found you.

I enjoyed this video and the lessons passed along! I want to do the same. I had a friend watch some tutorials and make a big table like this (I don’t think she used as thick of wood on top) and over a short time, the top boards started bowing/warping… I’m hoping to find info on this before I start into this project… I don’t remember exactly how she assembled it- so I’m not sure what she did wrong or differently. Thinking if just store bought wood is seasoned enough… (??) I hope I don’t have this prob 😬😬 Hope yours turns out good

You guys need to flip the 2x10 on top so the grain goes in opposite directions on every other board or you will have cupping issues in the future.
@samuelhunter9410
@samuelhunter9410 Год назад
Something else to consider is forcing bowed/cupped boards flat together and flush by clamping/screwing/gluing puts them under a lot of stress, and as the wood goes through seasonal movements, the top could split or crack. Most fine hardwood lumber suppliers have the equipment to plane lumber and will plane it for you for a nominal charge. You can invest in a good track saw in lieu of a jointer to trim the edges off (and simultaneously cut to the width you need). Ya'll did a great job. I'm not trying to criticize, just want to help.

Correct and the right tools make it a lot easier. My tools mainly came from habor freight about 10 years ago because I didn’t know I could make money from my projects now most of my tools are rigid from 13 inch planer and everything in between as the money comes in I buy up on my tools for most everything I build is in pairs etc dressers coffee tables etc but my biggest money maker is children furniture.

You can remove the screws if you need to remove the legs. Take a wood screw, place it on the center of the wood dowel plug and screw it in. When the screw bottoms out on top of the screw head hold the gussets it will push the dowel out exposing the screw underneath.

On the kreg jig bit, the 1-1/2 setting is the same as the 1-1/4 setting. Hence why it poked out too far, you had it bottomed out. The point of setting the jig at 1-1/2 is so the hole ends up in the center of the 2x. If with it correctly set, the screw still came out, just shorten the depth setting of the bit a little bit at a time until it no longer protrudes. For the legs, they are typically attached with the hanger bolts from the outside by not having the rails go all the way to the corner. This lets the hanger bolts pull it tight against the rails and hold everything tight.

Curious how the table is holding up. I have read lots about alternating boards to reduce warp/cupping across top and attachment methods to avoid cracking and splitting. Have your friends seen any issues with warp/crack/splitting as of yet? Great to see you working together and enjoying the process without all the pro tools!
@kylecromwell2654
@kylecromwell2654 10 месяцев назад
that really depends on how wet the wood was/is when you build it... good rule of thumb is to allow big box store construction wood to sit for at least 6 months in a dry area, so it can dry out properly.. most of the warping and twisting will be done by that point, and will last a lot longer.

Wild coincidence dude… I’m a former tree guy (still do it some on the side, currently glazier by trade) and have recently gotten into wood work and furniture builds. Just today I was wearing that exact stihl hat and husqvarna gloves building a table for a friend of mine and you guessed it, it was a farmhouse style table. (Hence me looking up other farmhouse style builds to see how other people do them) I saw your hat and gloves and was like woah that is weird! Lol

Brother, let me tell you, I seen much worse with guys who had much better tools, great work. Since you asked, gusset is for a roof truss, the tip of it. It performs the exact same function. In general terms, carpenters and builders refer to anything like that as a brace. Specifically, what you got there is a surface mount corner bracket for an apron on a table leg. Small wood vice is a nice diy. Small number 4 hand plane will take some elbow grease, but with $15.00, I got one that I sharpened really well and has served me well. Harbor Freight sells them. Orbital palm sander is also useful if you don't want to invest $300-$600.00 in a higher end planer. Clamp down on your home made wood vice, and plane away. It is surprisingly relaxing and you will tap into your inner old man strength and unlock generations of your ancestors doing the same for a millennia! 🙂

If you tackle one of these again and you wan it to be easily disassembled, you could try embedding T-nuts in the apron and drilling holes through the legs to insert bolts and bolt it together. Then drill holes thru the gussets large enough to accommodate a deep well socket so you could bolt and unbolt the table together as needed without removing the gussets. Something else I like to do is study pieces of furniture, even keeping them in my shop sometimes so I can reverse engineer them to come up with ideas for other projects and/or improving them.

How's the table holding up? I built my mom a farmhouse breakfast nook using pocket holes about three years and it's held up just fine. I'm getting away from pocket holes for commissioned work but it's good to know that when done right, it's viable! Ps. Way too many woodworking experts in the comments. The alternating grain direction for panels myth has been debunked. If you mill your lumber and allow it to acclimate then you'll only deal with minimal movement. I use z clips to attach my table tops to accomade for the movement. Blessings!

You were measuring wrong for the pocket holes on the 2x4s. You measured for parallel but then you were assembling perpendicular, this is why your screws were too big.

You made no allowance for wood movement in the way the table top was fastened to the base or the table top boards were fastened together. Cracking and splitting may result. A good book to read is Understanding Wood by R. Bruce Hoadley - a craftsman's guide to wood technology. There are also some good videos on You Tube that show the proper cosiderations to take in making a table to allow for wood movement as seasons change.
