I am using plywood today to burn the mane of a lion. I've opted for the cheaper wood today for the benefit of the beginners out there.
You can buy the tools I use with these links

Would love to know if anyone has an easier but effective technique.

Just added my opinion for creating a different technique...Use a quality White Acrylic paint...w quality paintbrush (es) to achieve same effects you use w a Dremel tool. Black paint @ white paint, REALLY can fix ANY area that needs corrected. For me...wmQoodburning,... like Sketching is a Back @ Forth, back @ Forth dance between Artist @ his/her Project. I hope you find my method helpful. It's quieter, ☺ one can control a Brush pretty easy, @ its even better for SuperFine detail. 🔥🔥🔥 Peace @ Love Pgh.Pa.

Hi Jack how do you get your lighter brown shades with the burner, do you have to turn it on a lower setting?

Hi Jack. From one Woodburner to another...dynamite WORK!, design/technique. Using the Dremel tool to Take-Away some of the burned Darkened space...is a major TIP to adding depth, creating light @ space. Never got a mini Dremel tool, but I use White acrylic paint w a good quality ( Fine) paintbrush ( MY own Trick ) to capture the same results as Dremel, too. NEW to ur site. 😉 Also agreed with you on the 5 important Tips you recomended for ppl. to consider when learning the Art of Woodburning.🔥👍🔥👍🔥👍🔥

Hi Terrie. Thanks so much for the compliments. The Dremel has really helped to turn my work into so much more than what it used to be.

Back again. Adored your Lion SO far...how-ever would of enjoyed actually seeing what strokes, OR HOW the Fur was actually burned. Fur IS tricky...BUT it really boils down to Lights @ Darks., etc. Like if you turned the reference Upside Down...you could/ would STILL create the Lion. Im sure you understand What i am trying to say. Lol. Thanks again

Wouldn't one have to be an artist to do this, cause your looking at a picture then trying to duplicate it onto the wood? The five tips for beginners you posted 5 months ago was the first video I saw about this craft, I guess I assumed that you would trace the picture to the wood (plank) the use the burned tool. I guess the more videos I see the more I would understand this craft.

I usually trace out the basic lines. There does have to be some level of skill in order to do the detail. All Im trying to do here is show the easiest way I can think of to get realistic looking results. It takes time but hopefully I can help people who want to improve.
