that was just a hss bit. normally i fit the piston in the drill then grind it on the linisher. i dont think i took to much of the 77 as its already straight.

Buttons aren't necessary, with proper polish debur and the right lube a 97's action can be super smooth and consistent, There is no metal to metal contact if you get the lubing and polishing correct, my own 97 is proof of this, running beautifully smooth accurate and bang on 17 ft lbs in 177, a lot of this is engineering for the sake of it with little gain, wouldn't dream of buttoning don't need it, 10.5mm groups at 50m

Peter .What lube are you using ?

@@stuartwilliams8663 1. v-mach grease, on piston skirt and seal (barely a smear, v little) 2. same on outer of comp cylinder, and on inside of the action, then spin slowly by hand to distribute evenly, then push cylinder fully forward and rearward, clean front of cylinder of excess grease carefully with rag, slide cylinder back and clear excess with small artists brush, (this is vital, as excess here will migrate down the piston sides causing problems shortly after. 3.vortek grease on last one third of spring to minimise any spring noise. Note mine is a custom tune, everything highly polished before hand and parts from different sources.

I agree only buttoning on a 77/97 worth doing if any are the rear of the air cylinder .the piston is free floating cocked , and the seal acts as the front buttons .. then lube the seal with silicone .. and the piston with pure ptfe (extreme flouro grease ) the piston goes like a greased eel , coupled with shortened piston , cut down spring , top hat piston shim , ultra fast lock time , everythings polished , even at fac power a pellet stays on the turret on firing , but with a cut down standard spring to keep everything legal . S W E E T . the only sound cocking is the whistle of air being drawn in .then a satisfying click as the trigger and safety engage 😀 ahhhhhh

Was wondering if you could do this to mine for me and how much would it cost? Thank you

Curious why you didn't use the lathe the remove the swage line and opted for the drill and belt sander?
@DPCSchannel

Because the piston has been factory hardened. It is hard work to machine it off.if you watch you will see how hard it is for the parting tool to penetrate the back area. A drill and belt sander are perfect for the job. I now have a tool post grinder it.

Ahh that makes sense, can you buy pistons that have had this done already, for people who don't have access to a lathe?

Simon Pendar-Hughes as in ones that have been buttoned or ones that have the swage ground flat? Theirs loads of people that do it

as in already buttoned, I have a HW97k and wondering where you can buy them ready to fit.

I am planning to do this job for my hw98 and 97, I have some derlin rods for this purpose, Do you machine a derling rod to get those groove bands or do buy them? Where?

Did you use a carbide tool the piston skirt on my hw77 seems hardened

Theyre easy to drill and saw iv shortened both 80 and 97 pistons

Look I've done quite a bit of lathe work in my time .This Author is dragging it out .Let me guess he's trying to make a side line . This would take a couple of minutes tops .
